The only way to “read” this book
Revisado: 12-10-23
I am so happy to be listening to this. I love people telling their stories in their own voice in my ears. It is very personal and powerful. But to have clips of the songs play that Barbra analyzes is so amazing. This is a long read/listen but without the audiobook, I would be going online every few moments to see/hear what Barbra is talking about.

These characters will creep into your heart. These books are the perfect balance of setting, story and character development. But it is how JD Kirk writes dialogue and moments of kindness that will stay with you.

Historia
Detective Sergeant Washington Poe can count on one hand the number of friends he has. And he'd still have his thumb left. There's the guilelessly innocent civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw of course. Insanely brilliant, she's a bit of a social hand grenade. He's known his beleaguered boss, Detective Inspector Stephanie Flynn for years as he has his nearest neighbour, full-time shepherd/part-time dog sitter, Victoria. And then there's Estelle Doyle. Dark and dangerous and sexy as hell.

Absolutely exceptional
Revisado: 12-22-22
These Tilly and Poe books with their engaging characters and intricate plot lines have made me less interested in simpler mysteries. The narrator is excellent. He can distinguish between make and female voices without using stereotypical overdramatizations. New favourite series. Used up four credits because I wanted to continue with the characters.

Historia
Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is in court, fighting eviction from his beloved and isolated croft, when he is summoned to a backstreet brothel in Carlisle where a man has been beaten to death with a baseball bat. Poe is confused—he hunts serial killers and this appears to be a straightforward murder-by-pimp—but his attendance was requested personally, by the kind of people who prefer to remain in the shadows. As Poe and the socially awkward programmer Tilly Bradshaw delve deeper into the case, they are faced with seemingly unanswerable questions.

Historia
In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

Absolutely Amazing
Revisado: 11-17-21
I knew that there was a reason for saving reviews of five stars for extremely special books. Midnight in Washington deserves five stars and more.
The book is very well read by author Adam Schiff. It is well written and edited moving from personal history to the recent national events that we are so familiar with.
At times, I had to take a break from listening because the events were so difficult to live through again. It made me so aware of how stressful it must have been for those directly involved.
I am so grateful that this book was written.

Historia
The war is over. Bernie Gunther, our sardonic former Berlin homicide detective and unwilling SS officer, is now living on the French Riviera. It is 1956, and Bernie is the go-to guy at the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat, the man you turn to for touring tips or if you need a fourth for bridge. As it happens, a local writer needs just that - someone to fill the fourth seat in a regular game that is the usual evening diversion at the Villa Mauresque. Not just any writer. Perhaps the richest and most famous living writer in the world: W. Somerset Maugham.

A mystery and a fascinating history lesson
Revisado: 06-17-21
This is an extraordinary book that captures characters and reveals a great story. But it is the many references to real people and events which make this book so effective. I would have finished the book in less time but I had to know more about the people being referenced. Absolutely fascinating book.

Great book but distasteful political premise
Revisado: 03-16-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will remember that sometimes small decisions change history. The author did a great job of imagining different life courses for important political figures while staying true to their personalities.
However, there is one aspect of the political process (won’t specify so that I don’t include a spoiler) that is so distasteful that it almost spoiled the book.
Strong narration.
