Historia
Harriet Ann Jacob's autobiography documents her life as a slave and how she attained freedom for herself and her children. Harrowing in its descriptions of sexual abuse, Jacob's slave narrative is notable for the appeal it made to abolitionist women to open their eyes to the realities of slavery. Deemed too shocking for reading audiences at the time, the book was shelved before it was published in 1861 near the start of the Civil War.

Marvelous
Revisado: 07-17-24
The narrator was perfect! This was a gripping story. I could not stop listening. So much of Linda's words, phrases and prayers are fitting and very relevant. I learned to call slavery what it is, a mean ole devil, snake! The Appendix was very insightful and made listening to this all the more meaningful!

Historia
If you are struggling to process loss, pain, or grief from the last few years or the last few minutes, J.S. is an experienced and deeply empathetic listener and grief catcher who has held the pain and questions of thousands of patients. While social and cultural narratives about grief are dominated by "letting go, moving on, or turning the page" in his nearly decade of service as a chaplain at a major hospital with a designated level one trauma center J.S. understands firsthand how rushing or suppressing grief only adds a suffocating layer of pain on top of the original wound.

Remarkable. Transparent. Hope giving.
Revisado: 05-11-24
Wow. I felt as though I was in this long conversation with Jun, where he told vulnerable and personal stories that helped give me perspective on how I handle or not handle my grief. I appreciate the title advisement. I was able to ask myself if I was ready for this "next chapter", pun intended. I felt Jun showed the utmost respect for our boundaries by adding this in the book. That being said, I had to skip the chapter-after starting it- that dove into racism. My body scan told me I wasn't ready yet. I hope to go back and listen over the summer. I felt as though the book ended so fast. I was definitely wanting to hear more. So let's get part two going Jun! There's one thing I have learned in experiencing trauma: we have to keep talking about it, keep telling others. I believe this is just one take away with this book, a loose paraphrasing here, "It's OK to take your loved one with you. You do this by talking about them, remembering them in real life, not just in your head. You do not get over them. Take your time. It's a process." Oh yeah, and part of the reality is, we are grieving "misopportunities" or "future opportunities with that loved one".

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Mrs Johnson writes a compelling historical fiction, a "no holds barred" conviction. Her creativity mixed with truths from our history is astounding. I live outside of Richmond and I am glad that the stories of the Lumpkin Slave Jail has not been lost over looked. I salute you, ma'am.

Historia
From the moment He arrived on the scene, Jesus posed a threat to the unjust, a threat to the oppressors, and a threat to every semblance of authority wielded by the kingdom of darkness. He invaded the world with love for the forgotten, hope for the hopeless, and freedom for the bound. His ideas were disruptive, subversive, and scandalous to the world around Him.

Encouraging, relatable, and affirming
Revisado: 04-14-23
This was an easy read or listen to complex matters of living for Jesus! Modern-day example, in ink, of what it means to live for Jesus and not play it safe!
My husband said he is going to read it again 🫨. We listened to the book on a drive to GA with the whole family. We paused to share relatable experiences my husband and I had with our children based on what KB was sharing.
Great job!

Historia
If God is holy, then he can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then he can’t sin against you. If he can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make him the most trustworthy being there is? Best-selling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God - we misunderstand his holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news.

Best Book, besides the Living Word, of 2021
Revisado: 09-07-21
The depth of this book and it's definition of what it means to be holy is one I have not read in my generation or before since that of J. C. Ryle, Jerry Bridges, and Andrew Murray. I appreciate Jackie for taking the time to explain first Who our holiness comes from, how it is obtained and how it manifests in everyday life of the believer, distinguishing them from the posers. Jackie's ability to take the reader/listener from a light walk in the park into the deep paths of righteous living was incredible! A great book is great when it is written by a Christian author, who tells the Gospel story over and over. I do not believe anyone else could have read this other than Mrs. Perry. Phenomenal. I felt it all. The Hallelujahs were perfectly placed and authentic. I will definitely listen again and have my teenage children read it as well.

Historia
John Charles Ryle’s best known works have been reissued and widely read over many years. The fine qualities of his writings have ensured that his books are still popular and useful. This volume has become a classic work and is known and loved by many throughout the world. In days when evangelical preachers are accused of being either superficial or dull, we have here a great example of one who was neither of these things. As Bishop Ryle applies his texts, the listener will find his soul examined.

Historia
In her late 30's, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down - the idea that Christianity, a religion she had regarded as problematic, might be right about who God was. That idea seemed to fly in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What follows is a story of what she describes as a train wreck at the hand of the supernatural. These are her secret thoughts about those events, written as only a reflective English professor could.
