Historia
When the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Bob Dylan in 2016, a debate raged. Some celebrated while many others questioned the choice. How could the world's most prestigious book prize be awarded to a famously cantankerous singer-songwriter who wouldn't even deign to attend the medal ceremony? In Why Bob Dylan Matters, Harvard Professor Richard F. Thomas answers this question with magisterial erudition.

Brilliant analysis of Dylan's work
Revisado: 09-28-21
Although Thomas' work covers Dylan's entire career, this book's focus is on his latest work including the album he declares a masterwork, Tempest. I like some of the ideas Thomas brings up especially his discussion of triads in Dylan's catalog. By reading this book, it's easy to understand why Dylan won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Historia
Written with the participation of the group's key members, including reclusive singer-songwriter Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson, and the family of late guitarist Bob Stinson, Trouble Boys is a deeply intimate and nuanced portrait, exposing the primal factors and forces - addiction, abuse, fear - that would shape one of the most brilliant and notoriously self-destructive bands of all time.

Great story about wasted talent
Revisado: 09-02-21
I loved the Replacements and thought they should have been bigger stars. But after this book, it's obvious how the band but especially Westerberg and Tommy Stinson were to blame for their failures. Westerberg wrote great songs but his lack of maturity and his constant need to be an asshole is demonstated consistently through the story.
Overall, Mehr does a great job telling a difficult story. One of the strengths of the audio production is the performamce of the reader, Mary Lucia, who happens to be Westerberg's sister and the subject of one of his best songs, Achin' To Be. Her performance is excellent throughout this tumultuous story.

Historia
That Thin, Wild Mercury Sound is the definitive treatment of Bob Dylan's magnum opus, Blonde on Blonde, not only providing the most extensive account of the sessions that produced the trailblazing album but also setting the record straight on much of the misinformation that has surrounded the story of how the masterpiece came to be made. Including many new details and eyewitness accounts, as well as keen insight into the Nashville cats who helped Dylan reach rare artistic heights, it explores the lasting impact of rock's first double album.

For Any Hardcore Dylan Fan or Blonde on Blonde fan
Revisado: 08-20-21
This book is an intimate study of the recording of one of the greatest rock'n'roll albums of all time. The author does a great job of detailing the recording sessions and the players at each session. It shows how Dylan changed personnel to best facilitate the song. A great book about a great album by a great musician; what could be better!
To show how much I like it, I've listened to it many times. If you're a Dylan fan or Blinde on Blonde fan, this is a fascinating exploration of this amazing album's creation.

Historia
For generations the electric guitar has been an international symbol of freedom, danger, rebellion, and hedonism. In Play It Loud, Brad Tolinski and Alan di Perna bring the history of this iconic instrument to roaring life. It's a story of inventors and iconoclasts, of scam artists, prodigies, and mythologizers as varied and original as the instruments they spawned. Play It Loud uses 12 landmark guitars - each of them artistic milestones in their own right - to illustrate the conflict and passion the instruments have inspired.

A Guitar lovers necessity
Revisado: 01-31-20
Tolinski writes and reads with the gusto of a true lover of the guitar. His insights and stories chosen to tell this tale are well selected and extremely illuminating about the history and development of the electric guitar, from its early years as a gimmick to an accepted instrument to the prevalent item in Rock and Roll. Hearing the stories about Les Paul, Leo Fender, Ted McCarty and more helped me to understand how the guitar business is today. A great book for guitar lovers.

Any Lou Reed fan will love this
Revisado: 03-14-19
I'm a huge fan of Lou's music. The detail covered in this book helps one understand why and how Lou was like he was. A very contradictory person, Lou's personal and professional lives are given excellent attention in this very solid biography.

Historia
When singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her London home in 2011, the press inducted her into what Kurt Cobain's mother named the 27 Club. "Now he's gone and joined that stupid club," she said in 1994, after being told that her son had committed suicide. Kurt's mom was referring to the extraordinary roll call of iconic stars who died at the same young age. The Big Six are Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison of the Doors, Kurt Cobain and, now, Amy Winehouse.
