Lots of teenage angst, not so much possession.
Revisado: 12-25-21
This was a long lead up to a disappointing climax. As a teenage girl coming of age in the 80’s it was fine. As a demonic possession story, not so much. Clever use of song titles though.

What a unique story! Lots of funny parts even amidst the carnage. Horror comedy is tough to get right, but the author has done it. Excellent narration.

Haunting and atmospheric
Revisado: 11-17-21
This story pulls the reader fully into the rivers and bayous of Arkansas. The struggles of Miranda and her adopted family are sometimes brutal, but always inspiring. All the characters are broken or flawed in some way, but they all deal with it differently. Some embrace the darkness, some use it as a tool, and some run.
Beautiful prose read by an excellent narrator.

Historia
It’s the summer of 1980 in Cleveland, Ohio, and Phoebe Shaw and her best friend Jacqueline have just graduated high school, only to confront an ugly, uncertain future. Across the city, abandoned factories populate the skyline; meanwhile at the shore, one strong spark, and the Cuyahoga River might catch fire. But none of that compares to what’s happening in their own west side neighborhood. The girls Phoebe and Jacqueline have grown up with are changing. It starts with footprints of dark water on the sidewalk. Then, one by one, the girls’ bodies wither away....

Amazing body horror married with urban rot!
Revisado: 02-18-20
Such a touching story. Phoebe ( protagonist) so wants to help and so wants to join the Rust Maidens. A wonderful portrait of the effects of urban decay on a neighborhood, a family, and an individual.
The narrator captured the voices of all the characters. Highly recommend.

This story is made to be heard, not read.
Revisado: 01-15-20
One of the most perfect uses of audible I’ve listened to. The structure of the book is a series of interviews/accounts of the horrific aftermath of a major hurricane on a huge amusement park. It works so well, drawing the listener in from the start. Who to believe?
The narrators are excellent, voicing multiple characters each. I thought there were more than two narrators, that’s how good they were.
The story is horrifying and intriguing, “Lord of the Flies” set in modern day. It speaks to the effect of social media and 24/7 connectivity, and what could happen when that access is removed. One of the best books I’ve listened to.

Too much tell, not enough show
Revisado: 11-25-19
A book in which half of the action is in flashback dies not lend itself to audio. Also, the narrator did not do male voices well at all. The father and husband sounded like the same person. Interesting tale, but better read than listened to.

Deft balance of many POVs in a desperate situation
Revisado: 06-21-19
Fabulous characters throughout. I was impressed by how fully developed the many characters were. The heart of the story takes place in a very tight timeframe, and gives the listener a panoramic experience. The one drawback was that some of the ecological narrative came across as a little preachy. A good and entertaining read.

Interesting premise, dragged on way too long
Revisado: 06-01-19
I liked the story overall. The friends isolated and in danger made for some horrid scenes. But so much of the story was in Luke’s head that I grew tired of it.
The narrator was fine until it got to the Norwegian accents. Way too overdone and nearly unintelligible. All I could think of was the Swedish Chef from the Muppets.
The story ends with a whimper, just kind of dies out with no real resolution.

Imaginative story, well told.
Revisado: 05-16-19
This is a coming of age story where the protagonist happens to be a werewolf. The characters are rich and fully drawn. The structure of the book with alternating chapters, first person then narrated, works very well. And the narrators were both outstanding. Enjoyed the book immensely.
