Historia
She is omnivorous. No matter age or appearance, physical frailty or imperfection. It is not their flesh that feeds her appetites, but their souls. She devours young and old, men and women. She leaves only a desiccated husk. An unspeakable evil. An impossible gift. Renowned magus Taita is now over 100 years old and has ascended to a new level of wisdom and understanding about his world. But he must prepare himself for the biggest threat Egypt has ever faced: the great plagues and the failure of the Nile, brought about by the fire witch Eos, an ancient force of sheer evil.

Title should have been “deus ex machina”
Revisado: 11-27-23
What started as an historical fiction story degenerated into something akin to Harry Potter and the Big Volcano. Whenever the protagonists encountered some significant challenge - out comes the magic or some other divine intervention. Fantasy is okay if that’s the premise you start with. Very disappointed with this one.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Historia
The Bottom of the Sky is an aching rags to riches family saga that surges from rural squalor into the opulent power chambers of Wall Street and Silicon Valley. The story contrasts the 30-year struggles of an abused sister and brother who seek to reclaim themselves from their abhorrent past. One is abandoned to a life of sexual desecration and addiction. The other escapes with his demons to wield fragile, uncanny genius and unrelenting ambition to amass staggering wealth.

Would you listen to The Bottom of the Sky again? Why?
This is a book that stays with you once you're done. The story is powerful, well written with interesting and memorable characters. Wasn't sure what to expect but really enjoyed it. Scott Brick, as narrator, may not be for everyone, but I enjoyed his somewhat sardonic performance.

Not one of Courtney's Best
Revisado: 10-06-15
What did you like best about Fishing for Stars? What did you like least?
As always, Humphrey Bower's does a masterful job of bringing the story to life, but unlike other Courtenay books this one never really grabbed and held me. It felt like Courtenay wasn't sure where he was going with this one. At several points I was tempted to abandon the book but trudged on to a so-so ending. Glad this wasn't the first Courtenay book I listened to as I would likely have passed on his other very excellent books.

Fascinating story, brilliantly written with wonderful narration. One of the best books I have listened to or read. No wonder it won a Pulitzer.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Throughout the book Johnson captures the power of propaganda and its complete enslavement of people - whether it be used by governments, institutions, corporations or religions.

Historia
This is Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love - his greatest love - the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna.

Would you listen to The Agony and the Ecstasy again? Why?
Absolutely loved this book. Stone weaves a wonderful story, effectively combining history, biography and fiction. Although I had read the book many, many years ago, listening made me appreciate Michelangelo's work (and that of his contemporaries) even more. Narration was excellent. Overall a must listen for anyone who loves art or wants to learn more about it.

Historia
Step into the powerhouse life of Bull Meecham. He's all Marine -- fighter pilot, king of the clouds, and absolute ruler of his family. Lillian is his wife -- beautiful, southern-bred, with a core of velvet steel. Without her cool head, her kids would be in real trouble. Ben is the oldest, a born athlete whose best never satisfies the big man. Ben's got to stand up, even fight back, against a father who doesn't give in -- not to his men, not to his wife, and certainly not to his son.

Had previously read Conroy's "The Lords of Discipline" and really enjoyed it. "The Great Santini" was even better. Dick Hill's narration is top notch and really brings the story to life. Highly recommend the book.
