Historia
For 60 years Jewish refugees and their descendants have prospered in the federal district of Sitka, a temporary safe haven created in the wake of the Holocaust and the shocking 1948 collapse of the fledgling state of Israel. The Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. But now the district is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end.

Just a wonderful story - it has everything!
Revisado: 10-12-16
I loved this book - the characters, the story, the alternative history, and the "wild west" feel of Chabon's Alaska.
Chabon creates this entire world, populated with people, places, foods, smells, an unsolvable chess gambit... and just enough magic to keep you eager to unravel the mystery.

Historia
In July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went into a cornfield and shot himself. Or did he? Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his life... and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue? These are just a few of the questions confronting Vincent's friends who vow to discover the truth of van Gogh's untimely death.

Maybe the best book I've read in a decade
Revisado: 09-16-14
I simply can't exaggerate the greatness of this book.
Art, history, mystery, paint. The supernatural. Trances. Possession. Immortality.
Am I making sense?
The book itself is a history of blue paint, but not just ANY Blue: The Sacred Blue, made in exactly the same enchanted way since the dawn of time. Bawdy and hilarious yet also compelling and romantic.
Euan Morton is so gifted - you can almost feel the characters in the room with you.
DON'T MISS THIS PERFORMANCE!

Historia
In the picturesque village of Guzmán, Spain, in a cave dug into a hillside on the edge of town, an ancient door leads to a cramped limestone chamber known as “the telling room”. Containing nothing but a wooden table and two benches, this is where villagers have gathered for centuries to share their stories and secrets - usually accompanied by copious amounts of wine. It was here, in the summer of 2000, that Michael Paterniti found himself listening to a larger-than-life Spanish cheesemaker named Ambrosio Molinos de las Heras as he spun an odd and compelling tale about a piece of cheese.

Starts out great but loses it along the way
Revisado: 09-16-14
I really wanted to love this book. Loyalty, family, history, cheese. Fantastic, right?
Unfortunately, the author gets hopelessly bogged down in his story, and this book (which is WAAAY too long), turns into a book about an author getting bogged down by a book he can't finish writing.
When "the end" finally came, I really had no idea why, and found myself saying, "Really?"
I've said the book is too long, and I mean that. Much of the repeated descriptions of the towns and the land and the (extensive) history of Spain seemed like filler, or maybe something to keep the author's mind working while he tried to figure out what his content should be.
I don't NOT recommend this book, but I don't really recommend it either. The story of the cheese is pretty compelling. I'm just not sure it's worth listening this many hours to get it.
A word on the performance: L.J. Ganser read with enthusiasm, but his over-enunciation of every single word (not just the Spanish) was grating and incredibly distracting.

Historia
Scientology, created in 1954 by a prolific sci-fi writer named L. Ron Hubbard, claims to be the world's fastest-growing religion, with millions of members around the world and huge financial holdings. Its celebrity believers keep its profile high, and its teams of "volunteer ministers" offer aid at disaster sites such as Haiti and the World Trade Center. But Scientology is also a notably closed faith, harassing journalists and others through litigation and intimidation, even infiltrating the highest levels of government to further its goals.

Astounding, informative, and terrifying
Revisado: 08-01-14
I really appreciate the author making every effort to write an objective book about a controversial subject. Reading this book makes you realize that even without nuance, the facts in this story are absolutely chilling. Anyone who has any interest in the Church of Scientology should absolutely read this book.

Historia
The summer that Nixon resigns, six teenagers at a summer camp for the arts become inseparable. Decades later the bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. In The Interestings, Wolitzer follows these characters from the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge. The kind of creativity that is rewarded at age 15 is not always enough to propel someone through life at age 30; not everyone can sustain, in adulthood, what seemed so special in adolescence.

This book was recommended by a friend, and honestly I couldn't believe it could possibly be as good as he said. I was wrong. It's a long book, and it spans a lot of time, but it's usually written and the characters are all absolutely wonderful.

She wants Burke to find a monster for her - so she can kill him with her bare hands. Great author, but skip this title
Revisado: 08-01-14
This is probably my sixth or seventh Christopher Moore book. He is a fantastic author, and his stories are all wonderful. All but this one. I think this must be a very early book. The story is not good and the performance is not good either. I constantly recommend his books to friends, but I'm seriously considering asking for a refund on this one.

Just not very good
Revisado: 05-23-14
I don't write many negative reviews, but I just can't recommend this book. The story (no spoilers) could have been interesting, but all the subplots and all the characters are dull, cliched, and sometimes even insulting. Aside from that, the reader was pretty awful too. Maybe if she were better I could have looked away about the plots, characters and dialog? Probably not.
Yes, this was on sale for only $3.95, so I won't ask to be credited back, but if I'd paid a whole credit for it I certainly would.

Venice, a really long time ago: Three prominent Venetians await their most loathsome and foul dinner guest, the erstwhile envoy from Britain who also happens to be a favorite of the Doge: The rascal-Fool Pocket. This trio of cunning plotters have lured Pocket to a dark dungeon, promising a spirited evening. Their invitation is, of course, bogus. These scoundrels have something far less amusing planned for the man who has consistently foiled their quest for power and wealth. But this Fool is no fool.…

Another great read from Moore and Morton
Revisado: 05-23-14
I was so happy to see this new book that I ordered it the day it was released. Thank goodness Euan Morton is still on board to perform, because he is my new favorite actor of all time. The story continues where we left Pocket at the end of FOOL (also a HUGE recommend), and this is another great Shakespeare mashup by Moore.
Be sure to stick around for the epilogue, read by Moore, which clarifies what is and is not Shakespeare.
