Historia
Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated. Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric coworkers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won't be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes.

Oh Fred, you refuse to be an action hero.
Revisado: 02-05-23
It’s what makes the series so compelling, his confident drive to live a normal, boring life, and leaving action things to the action people in his orbit. As only Kirby Heyborne can deliver it.

Kate Rossdale once held all the promise of becoming Baltimore’s greatest sorceress. But a promise is a hard thing to hold when your coven is murdered, your magic is stripped away, and the only solace left to you comes one powdered line at a time. When she’s offered the restoration of her power by a man she doesn’t know or trust, Kate sets in motion the retribution of her enemies. Soon she finds herself racing across the globe, hunting for the magic-thief who robbed her of everything she held dear, including the most dangerous magic any sorceress can possess - hope.

Historia
What does the most powerful wizard in the world do after the war? Despite the hordes of goblins still ready to ravage human lands, King Rard has signed a treaty with them, so Minalan is forbidden from taking advantage of their weak state. Most would take a well-deserved rest over the summer…but Minalan and his household are busy repaying a favor owed to the tribal Kasari for their help in the war, and the Spellmonger pays his debts. So Minalan spends his summer sneaking 2,000 Kasari children through enemy lines and some of the roughest territory in the Five Duchies toward salvation.

One of the best books I’ve ever read
Revisado: 02-23-19
I love the Spellmonger series, and Journeymage is a story that could only be told in the wonderful universe Terry Mancour has built. Having agreed to escort the children of allies who were timely in their assistance, Minalan the Spellmonger turns his considerable arcane resources to the task of keeping a thousands strong march supplied and safe as they cross paths and purposes with hungry goblins, defiant feudal lords, and even his own lawful sovereign.
A unique and beautiful tale, and a sterling example of storytelling done right.

In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one. He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything. Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game. Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities. With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job. His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a super villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.

Imagine Scarface as a harem comedy, played straight.
Revisado: 08-02-17
I approached the notion of a heroic(or at least protagonist) capitalist vindictive slave owner with skepticism. But it didn't last long. This is a classic example of a book that got written when someone had a silly notion, and committed to playing it out. Plot holes are surprisingly few and acknowledged by characters where they do appear.
The narration is above and beyond. There's radio fuzz when characters talk through headsets, and a faint echo to denote MC internal monologue.
I went and looked to see if there'll be a second one. There will be. :)

Gary Karkofsky a.k.a Merciless: The Supervillain Without Mercy (TM) returns in the fourth volume of the popular Supervillainy Saga. Having discovered the world's greatest superhero slain by his doppelganger from another reality, Merciful: The Supervillain with Mercy (TM), and the arrogant President Omega, Gary dedicates himself to overthrowing both. Unfortunately, this is harder than it looks since Merciful has all of Gary's genre savviness while President Omega has the entire brainwashed United States military.

The author made an audiobook narrator tie in joke. It was a crowning moment of meta humor for a series that is already pretty darn meta.

A simple pickup and delivery. No questions asked; no looking inside the cargo. All it requires is a fast, stealthy ship and a crew who can keep their imaginations and consciences in check until the drop-off. The Mobius is up to the task, but when the crew can't control their curiosity, they're faced with a moral dilemma. Do they cut their losses? Contact the authorities? Take the money and run?

Morin continues to hit the spot.
Revisado: 05-23-16
I'd like to laud the production/performance of this series. The voices are distinct and full of life, the narrator makes excellent use of verb cues (yawned comes to mind) and scene breaks are marked by a wooshy sound bite, which practice I'd frankly like to see catch on.

Ray Porter as narrator was a perfect choice for a supernatural western.
This novel is pulpy and enjoyable. As a longtime gamer familiar with Deadlands, I was able to break the book into sessions, and familiarity with the rules helps track the action. (Pretension done.). Nothing groundbreaking, but had a great time; likely will reread.

Historia
With human civilization annihilated by a biological zombie plague, a rag-tag fleet of yachts and freighters known as Wolf Squadron scours the Atlantic, searching for survivors. Within every abandoned liner and carrier lurks a potential horde, safety can never be taken for granted, and death and turning into one of the enemy is only a moment away. Yet every ship and town holds the flickering hope of survivors. One and two from lifeboats, a dozen from a fishing village, a few hundred wrenched by fury and fire from a ship that once housed thousands....

This is the best kind of audiobook. An already great story further improved by a talented narration. Nuance, distinct character voices, and emotional delivery lend additional depth to the story, and in particular make the military aspects more accessible to the laypersons like myself.

Historia
Ree Reyes’s life was easier when all she had to worry about was scraping together tips from her gig as a barista and comic shop slave to pursue her ambitions as a screenwriter. When a scruffy-looking guy storms into the shop looking for a comic like his life depends on it, Ree writes it off as just another day in the land of the geeks. Until a gigantic “BOOM!” echoes from the alley a minute later, and Ree follows the rabbit hole down into her town’s magical flip-side.

Solid story ruined by bad narration
Revisado: 08-19-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would not recommend this audiobook to a friend, but the e-book is still worth getting.
What other book might you compare Geekomancy to and why?
This book reminds me of Diana Wynne Jones' Deep Secrets, for its cheery blend of urban fantasy and geek culture.
What didn’t you like about Julia Farhat’s performance?
Where to even begin! The story and main character have potential, if a tad heavy handed with the pop culture, but the narration is truly abysmal. Julia Farhat reads mechanically with hints of false cheer accentuating the ends of random words, transforming a character that should be likable and believable into an insincere Valley girl. She rarely displays any emotion that's consistent with what's taking place in the story, and on the occasions she does, it comes across forced and uninspired.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
So long as they got someone else for the main character.
Any additional comments?
The story has potential, so I'm going to finish this book up via e-book, and buy the second one, Celebromancy, on audiobook since they got a new narrator who I am already familiar with.

Historia
When a clockwork-powered man of brass is found abandoned in Trafalgar Square, Burton and his assistant, the wayward poet Algernon Swinburne, find themselves on the trail of the stolen Garnier Collection - black diamonds rumored to be fragments of the Lemurian Eye of Naga, a meteorite that fell to Earth in prehistoric times. His investigation leads to involvement with the media sensation of the age: the Tichborne Claimant, a man who insists that he's the long lost heir to the cursed Tichborne estate.

Wonderfully written, wonderfully read.
Revisado: 08-02-13
Any additional comments?
The best thing about this story is how it paints a picture of historical London, and then introduces steampunk and magic elements so smoothly and naturally that there is little to no suspension of disbelief required on the part on the listener. The narration is perfectly executed, and the different voices of the reader are fluid and varied enough that you're rarely, if ever, brought out of the story.
A terrific buy for book lovers of all genres!
