Historia
Guido Brunetti faces a heinous crime committed outside his jurisdiction. He is drawn in innocently enough: two young American women have been badly injured in a boating accident, joyriding in the Laguna with two young Italians. However, Brunetti's curiosity is aroused by the behavior of the young men, who abandoned the victims after taking them to the hospital. If the injuries were the result of an accident, why did they want to avoid association with it?

Tedious. Not very interesting overall. Love the reader, and usually love the author, but this one not so much.

Don't read outline or detailed reviews

Not a bad story if you stretch your imagination and the reader is great, but the reviews all gave it away. All that was left were the mechanics.

Historia
Surprised, if not dismayed, to discover from his superior, Vice-Questore Patta, that leaks are emanating from the Questura, Commissario Guido Brunetti is surprised more consequentially by the appearance of a friend of his wife's, fearful that her son is using drugs and hopeful Brunetti can somehow intervene. When Tullio Gasparini, the woman's husband, is found unconscious and with a serious brain injury at the foot of a Venice bridge at midnight, Brunetti is drawn to pursue a possible connection to the boy's behavior. But the truth, as Brunetti has experienced so often, is rarely straightforward.

Not the best, but interesting....
Revisado: 11-16-19
I didn't think we had enough clues to solve it....too many read herrings and a late introduction to the perp....but it was still an enjoyable trip to Venice. I think Paola is coming off a little snarky, superior and critical in the past few books. I liked her better when she was smart, intuitive and ....less the know-it-all wife.

Perfect balance of mystery + Lynley/Havers
Revisado: 08-17-18
I realky liked the story and the reader is excellent. I loved that it wasn't completely focused on Havers shortcomings or any focus at all on Deidre. It's time for Lynley to meet someone new and get at least one more book that includes Deborah, St. James, etc.

Glad I Read it, But......
Revisado: 05-23-18
Well written book loosely based on life of Gauguin. Why? Why not write a biography based on facts? One comes away not knowing what is truth and what is fiction. I looked it up. A lot is fiction. What will stick with me....the truth or the fiction?
Still, it was an enjoyable story and a good reader. It DID make me do some research I might not have done on my own.....

Revisado: 03-29-18
Haven't read McDermid in awhile, so very pleased to find from this friend's recommendation that she's still got it. Very real characters and interactions between them. Convincing police procedural with a huge twist. Now I wish I'd read the last few prior to this one. And now I also CAN'T WAIT to see where she goes next.

Great book: horrible female reader
Revisado: 02-01-18
French never disappoints. The story and dialogue are great. The male reader is great. The female voice sounds like a 5 y/0 child, overenuciated, breathless and cutesy. Just awful.

Disappointing... .
Revisado: 01-28-18
I confess I couldn't finish. Always a huge Crombie fan, I found this one, for the first time, boring and dull. I couldn't find a character to like or who intrigued me. Gemma and Duncan's domestic problems have gone stale and the focus on Charlotte is mind-blowingly uninteresting. The way Crombie writes is, as usual, engaging, but the plot itself is incredible lame. I can't believe I'm saying this about Crombie, but there you are. ..
