Leigh Bardugo and Lauren Fortgang are amazing as always
Revisado: 12-06-24
I adore Lauren Fortgang. She does such a great job narrating and changing voices without making them weird. I really enjoyed the story as well and am very curious to see where it goes next!

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Like Harry Potter, but funnier
Revisado: 07-27-24
I LOVED this book! It’s like Harry Potter, but if it was from the perspective of one of the side characters who gets saved by Harry and is PISSED because they wouldn’t have needed saved by Harry if he hadn’t been doing Harry Potter things. This book was hilarious, and the narrator did such an excellent job. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series and will absolutely be recommending it to a lot of people!

Poor writing, Disappointing character development
Revisado: 05-23-24
This was one of the first books I’ve read in a while where I couldn’t not notice the poor writing and character development. The characters did not develop in a natural relatable way. Much of it was a trauma happening, then one conversation and everything was fine and forgettable. Not much introspection and actual development that should have been there to get past things. This book was to fantasy what reality tv is to real life.
Also, the female narrator does the annoying thing where she has a ridiculous deep voice for the male characters.
I did continue the series to find out what happened, but mainly because I couldn’t look up a synopsis to find out what happened without actually reading them. I would much rather have read a synopsis. I definitely don’t recommend the series.

Fantastic sequel and conclusion!
Revisado: 05-12-24
I loved both this and the previous book. I love non-spicy romantasy, and this is definitely that. It doesn’t mean nothing happens, but anything that does is not graphic. Also the story and the twists and turns with the different perspectives is so delightful. I really, really enjoyed this duology and definitely recommend it!!!

Historia
Feisty, passionate Beatrice Steele has never fit the definition of a true lady, according to the strict code of conduct that reigns in Swampshire, her small English township—she is terrible at needlework, has absolutely no musical ability, and her artwork is so bad it frightens people. Nevertheless, she lives a perfectly agreeable life with her marriage-scheming mother, prankster father, and two younger sisters— beautiful Louisa and forgettable Mary. But she harbors a dark secret: She is obsessed with the true crime cases she reads about in the newspaper.

An unexpected delight
Revisado: 03-16-24
I was curious about this book, but even though I was interested, I wasn’t expecting it to be as delightful as it was. It’s like pride and prejudice, but with a murder investigation and some casual supernatural, which I wasn’t expecting. It made it SO much more amusing. I definitely recommend this book!

Historia
As a wielder of domestic magic, Finlay Ashowan likes to keep his affairs as neat and orderly as his kitchen. But between his work for the King and Queen of Daxaria and a new (secret) relationship with Lady Annika Jenoure, his life is anything but tidy. For one thing, if Annika and Fin are to continue their romance, they’ll need to sort out the pesky issue of Fin’s being a commoner—before Annika is forced into a political marriage that interferes with her own carefully laid plans. For another, pressure is mounting as the war with Troivack draws ever closer.

When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

SUCH a delight!
Revisado: 03-06-24
I wasn’t expecting to have strong opinions of this book, and was pleasantly surprised. The whole thing is DELIGHTFUL! Aside from a decent amount of swearing (which I loved), it’s a pretty clean listen. It is adorable and wholesome and charming and hilarious. I have recommended it to so many people before even finishing it, and now that I have, I stand by my opinions. It is SUCH a delightful read and became one of the best books I’ve listened to in awhile. 10/10 recommend, please read!

Best book in series so far!
Revisado: 01-22-24
Hands down my favorite book in the Throne of Glass series by far. Probably because of the character development finally coming to more fruition, but also some parallels between characters that sheds more light on the others symbolically, and it makes it such a job to listen to!

Great information, horrible execution
Revisado: 12-08-23
I really appreciate all the information in the book! There is so much food for thought there, that even if the author doesn’t convince you, she at least gives you food for thought to mull over for awhile after reading it. The information is so good, which is why it is SO FRUSTRATING that my friend and I (we read it together) can’t in good conscience recommend the book to anyone. If the book had been better edited/formatted, it would have been amazing. It is set up to give you bits of the information all at once, and doesn’t entirely separate the topics by chapter in a way in which it is easier to reference. This book SHOULD be set up so it is easy to reference back to! It would have made more sense to do a quick overview, then set up the book with the history, of how the views evolved, then how those views influenced the different translations, then how that affects us today. The book tries to throw too much at you in the intro, when it should really be overall themes that will be referenced later, then thoroughly explained in later chapters. Also, there are several topics (chapters even) in the later parts of the book that, while interesting, are not actually relevant to the overall point that it’s likely we inserted hell into a gospel that didn’t originally have it. Later points (like what the different ages might be) don’t actually matter to the main point, so they take away from the point because they aren’t as concrete for evidence and are speculation. The logistics of them doesn’t really matter, maybe just evidence that they could exist, but not spending so much time talking about each one.
Also, I hate not eating performance well, but the narrator was close to monotone and very dry. It made the book difficult to focus on, and the editing/format didn’t help my focus either.
I really, REALLY wish this book was more well done so I could recommend it! So if you are willing to wade through an unclear layout of the information, you should try it! I wish you the best of luck because the topic is important and worthwhile and great to mull over/ponder on.

What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

Fantastically informative, interesting, and very well edited
Revisado: 12-01-23
Having recently listened to other nonfiction that was HORRIBLY organized, this book was incredibly refreshing. Not only was it incredibly interesting, but its layout and editing was SO well done. It really helped me to enjoy the book even more than I would have from how interesting the information is. 10/10 recommend.
