Historia
At every moment, within our bodies and all around us, trillions of microscopic combatants are waging a war that shapes our health and life on Earth. Countless times per second, viruses known as phages attack and destroy bacteria while leaving all other life forms, including us, unscathed. Vastly outnumbering the viruses that do us harm, phages power ecosystems, drive evolutionary innovation, and harbor a remarkable capacity to heal life-threatening infections when conventional antibiotics fail. Yet most of us have never heard of them, thinking of viruses only as enemies to be feared.

Interesting book & terrible narration
Revisado: 05-03-24
For even a microbiologist like me, who studies antibiotics & phage therapies, this book is highly interesting & informative. The narrator on the other hand, is terrible. Can we please for once, get some who can properly pronounce the names of bacteria?!

Historia
The search to find medicines is as old as disease, which is to say as old as the human race. Through serendipity - by chewing, brewing, and snorting - some Neolithic souls discovered opium, alcohol, snakeroot, juniper, frankincense, and other helpful substances. Ötzi the Iceman, the 5,000-year-old hunter frozen in the Italian Alps, was found to have whipworms in his intestines and Bronze Age medicine, a worm-killing birch fungus, knotted to his leggings.

Fascinating book & terrible performance
Revisado: 03-02-24
As a “professional drug hunter” myself (I work on testing experimental drugs against rapid-growing &close cousins of M. tuberculosis), I find this brief history of drug hunting fascinating. However, the narrator really needs to learn how to pronounce names of the bacteria properly & so he would sound remotely resembling an expert of the field.

Extraordinarily boring book about an extraordinary woman
Revisado: 12-01-23
The story of Marie Laveau fascinates me. That’s why I am so disappointed by this book. It’s so boring & the writing is so bad that I had such a hard time finishing it.

Can you imagine writing to Father Christmas and actually getting a reply? Every year, the children of J.R.R. Tolkien would write to Father Christmas, and the letters they received told wonderful stories of his adventures at the North Pole. These humorous tales are brought to life by Derek Jacobi as Father Christmas, John Moffatt as Polar Bear, and Christian Rodska as Ilbereth the Elf, complete with specially composed music.

Historia
In 1956, 23-year-old Colin Clark began work as a lowly assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl, the film that united Sir Laurence Olivier with Marilyn Monroe. The blonde bombshell and the legendary actor were ill suited from the start. Monroe, on honeymoon with her new husband, the celebrated playwright Arthur Miller, was insecure, often late, and heavily medicated on pills. Clark was perceptive in his assessment of what seemed to be going wrong in Monroe's life and became her confidant and ally.

Fascinating memoirs, not so good writing
Revisado: 02-18-23
The story is fascinating by itself, though its social, psychological implications are not necessarily all good/ethical. I guess that’s ok with its historical context & personal nature. However, I do find the writing mediocre. Having to read the same story 3 times (first the normal text, then the letter & diary in appendix) is just really tiresome.

Don’t waste your time
Revisado: 06-27-22
I was not too impressed with the Netflix show. Since listening to the book (only because it’s free in the plus catalog), I have realized what valiant effort the script writers have put in, albeit in vain, to save the terrible source material. The narrator is great, but once again nothing can save this disaster of a story.

Even more terrible than Twilight
Revisado: 08-04-20
As a so-called companion book for twilight, this one is so agonizingly terrible to read, I literally couldn’t bear to finish even the first chapter. Unless you’re still stuck in the mind of a high school girl back in 08, stop wasting your time/money/credit.
