Historia
Thomas Cahill tells the story of how Europe evolved from the classical age of Rome to the medieval era. Without Ireland, the transition could not have taken place. Not only did Irish monks and scribes maintain the very record of Western civilization, they brought their uniquely Irish world-view to the task. As Cahill delightfully illustrates, so much of the liveliness we associate with medieval culture has its roots in Ireland. When the seeds of culture were replanted on the European continent, it was from Ireland that they were germinated.

The reading was overwrought
Revisado: 01-20-25
This was not your typical Audible reading. The narrator seemed to be auditioning for a Shakesperian tragedy. If you prefer a neutral reading that puts the material first, choose the Kindle or print version.

Absolutely riveting
Revisado: 11-26-21
I work for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Aftet listening to this book at home, I played it, 5 minutes day, to my five-person team at our daily meetings. We all felt that it made us understand the human impact of mine hazards a hundred times as effectively as reading about them. We couldn't believe these were actors.

Historia
Fumio Sasaki changed his life when he became a minimalist. But before minimalism could really stick, he had to make it a habit. All of us live our lives based on the habits we’ve formed, from when we get up in the morning to what we eat and drink to how likely we are to actually make it to the gym. In Hello, Habits, Sasaki explains how we can acquire the new habits that we want - and get rid of the ones that don’t do us any good.

Superbly narrated
Revisado: 08-28-21
The American narrator, Brian Nishii has a soothing voice. Seldom have I heard a narrator bring to bear such skill in timing and inflection. Apparently he speaks Japanese, because when he spoke a Japanese name, his pronunciation sounded spot-on and effortless. I almost forgot that I was listening to a narrator instead of to the author himself.

Revisado: 03-25-21
Engagingly written. Also engagingly narrated, there were times that got the sense that the names being pronounced had exaggerated foreign accent. I'm just surprised that such a talented narrator could stumble over the word "causality," pronounce it "casualty" not once, not twice, but three times in the span of a minute (Chapter 74).

Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's iconic webcomic. His stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language, and love have a large and passionate following. Fans of xkcd ask Munroe a lot of strange questions. What if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent of the speed of light? How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? If there were a robot apocalypse, how long would humanity last?

Through an unforgettable cast of characters, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Rhodes explains how wood gave way to coal and coal made room for oil, as we now turn to natural gas, nuclear power, and renewable energy. Rhodes looks back on five centuries of progress, through such influential figures as Queen Elizabeth I, King James I, Benjamin Franklin, Herman Melville, John D. Rockefeller, and Henry Ford.

Too focused in Modern Anglo- America
Revisado: 01-19-19
essentially this book begins at the Industrial Revolution in England and seldom leaves England or America. I was hoping to go back to the farthest civilizations. Also, I could have done without the American narrators tepid imitations of English, Scottish, Irish, and Russian accents.

Historia
When the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Bob Dylan in 2016, a debate raged. Some celebrated while many others questioned the choice. How could the world's most prestigious book prize be awarded to a famously cantankerous singer-songwriter who wouldn't even deign to attend the medal ceremony? In Why Bob Dylan Matters, Harvard Professor Richard F. Thomas answers this question with magisterial erudition.

couldn't wait for it to end
Revisado: 01-14-18
I've never thought much of Dylan's Tunes or lyrics. I thought even less of his voice. The only reason I read this book is that my daughter is about to marry a young man whose first name is Dylan. Yes, the young man's parents named him after Bob Dylan. Their hero. I figured I owed it to my Dylan and his parents to see what the fuss was about. Listening to this book was excruciating. The author cites examples of Dylan genius. Genius? You've got to be kidding me. He's no Stephen Sondheim or Billy Joel. to me, this book simply reaffirmed why I thought Dylan is a second or third rate pretender.

Most of us want to make a difference. We donate our time and money to charities and causes we deem worthy, choose careers we consider meaningful, and patronize businesses and buy products we believe make the world a better place. Unfortunately we often base these decisions on assumptions and emotions rather than facts. As a result even our best intentions often lead to ineffective - and sometimes downright harmful - outcomes. How can we do better?

The narrator was clear until the final syllable of a sentence, when he would suddenly lower his volume by 6 or 9 decibels. As a result, I would need to keep the volume artificially high, lest I lose the final word.

if you read widely about health care policy, you'll find little new in this book. That said, the final chapter has interested me in reading the author's earlier book, Net Attitude.
