Ding...Matt Dinniman. you have achieved a new level. Reward, you are screwed, you don't get a reward, other than agonizing over how you are going to top this one. Seriously I see some late nights, moments of panic and stress eating mongo's weight in pizza for the next book. To be fair the set up going into the 9th floor is mouth watering and I cannot wait to see what you come up with, but first let's talk about this book.

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride, brought a few new aspects to the game. Want to make things just a little stranger, lets combine the dungeon and fighting mobs with a new card game mash up of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Not to mention they are separated again from all of their friends in a three part floor.

Part one, gotta catch them all get your cards and create a great fighting deck. Donut really gets to show of her cat cunning as she is the deck master here. But in a game made by aliens who didn't really understand your planet you end up with some crazy and slightly offensive cards. Just think of all the mythos, cultures and religion to pull from and you come up with some bangers.

“It’s the Son Who Fell. The Sinner, Resurrected. The Bringer of Disease, Bringer of Salvation. The Ender of All Blasphemy. It’s the calamitous, rapturous, and ultimately hazardous master of the life-death boomerang. It’s Lazarus-A-Bang-Bang!”

Part two, Use your deck to beat the mobs and get a key. The AI might be falling apart a little early and playing by his own rules which leads to some pretty messed up storylines and monsters in the game.

Part three, where the pooh really starts to hit the fan. There are only so many keys and this is where they try to get humanity to turn on one another. Hard decisions will be made and Carl might get pushed to the brink.

There was so much happening in this. Katia and her 'situation' with a certain crown, the gods starting to show up more causing chaos, the head of a sex doll possessed by a spirit gaining power, The AI going off the rails, Lawyers getting involved, MaeMae (she terrifies me a little) and some more new players to the game. There was never a dull moment. Every time I think Matt Dinniman can't outdo himself he goes and proves me wrong. Not only Juicebox putting her mark on the game, there are some factions on the outside that are starting to move their pieces into position. SO MANY THINGS!!!

Carl and Donut banter is still hilarious and well worth tuning in for.

“I didn’t realize you’d actually get that thing to work. Are you planning on growing a mullet as well? Are there any Waffle Houses between here and there? Maybe we can stop and get into a brawl, but only after you bounce a few child support payment checks first.”

I love them as a team and can't wait to see how the next floor is going to work out. There are some big moves to be made and Carl has set the stage up nicely. Gah...how can 27 hours of audio just not be enough.

Narration:

With the addition of a few extra voice actors to make a couple of side characters shine this narration was even better than the others. Jeff Hays nails his performance again, he brings Carl and Donut to life and I love it. Travis Baldree and Patrick Warburton backed him up well on some of the side characters to really add some extra flavor to the performance. The addition of a few sound affects and my experience was enhanced by at least 1.5 stars.

NEW ACHIEVEMENT! You finished this book in record time putting all of your adulting on the back burner like a pro gamer wearing a diaper on a 36 hour gaming binge.

REWARD! Your house looks like one of Carl's plans went sideways and a bomb blew up in it. Guess you will need to prioritize and get it cleaned up before moving on to level 5 in book 4. OR you could just jump into the next book and deal with all the consequences later hoping for a loot box with a cleaning robot to help out.

If you are here you know what this series is all about and like me you are here for it. We have another great adventure, this time in a tunnel system with trains, crazy lore and npc characters and an AI that is starting to go a little bonkers.

I enjoyed our team as Carl and Donut start to mesh with a new addition to the team. Katia is coming along nicely as she meshes with the team and learns how to be a tank. Her abilities were really cool and I loved how Carl always thinks up some great plan that ultimately goes sideways.

***“I wasn’t just going to abandon you, Carl,” Donut said. “Who do you think I am? Miss Beatrice?”***

Donut still steals the show with all the crazy things she says and I love her loyalty to the team members and Mongo.

Again small details of the outer world and it's issues are seeping in and Carl's new book seems like it is going to be extremely helpful or get him killed, but that is just about everything in that Dungeon.

Another great ride with a lot of action, explosions and just flat out fun. I'm loving all the characters and especially how a lot of the humans banded together in this level to share information and try to get as many as possible to the next level. The humor and characters really bring the story together. On to the 5th floor!!!

Highly recommend the audio!!! Jeff Hays' performance was just pure fun. I loved the over the top narration that fit the story so well. I hadn't had the pleasure of listening to a narration by him before DCC series, but I am sure that the story wouldn't have been quite as much fun without it. Seriously great time and I couldn't put it down once I started. He is perfect for all of the snarky commentary and I absolutely love all of his voices.

Mongo is Appalled - How is it that I didn't know about this series when it first came out. Every book is longer, stronger and filled with even more crazy stuff. Characters die, twists hit you out of no where and Carl pulls a grenade of chaos out of his bag and hits Kau-Tin in the middle of the fish faces.

You'd think that a dungeon book that is more than 700 pages long might be too long, but you would be wrong. Well only if it is Matt Dinniman's book. There are so many cool things in this book. Besides the awesomeness that is Carl and Donut's relationship, which makes the book, there were some other characters that had book stealing moments. Samantha for one the withering demi-god spirit that is stuck in the head of a sex doll is fascinating. Her lines are almost as funny as Donut's.

Another new addition to the Princess Posey is their lawyer. Apparently Carl is shaking up the entire Syndicate empire and they are pissed about that portal he used on the prior floor, so everyone is suing him. That's okay he will figure out a way to make the best of this.

The ever more unstable AI, his obsession with Carl's feet and more descriptive and disturbing commentary always floors me. How does Matt Dinnaman come up with these lines, it might be a really disturbing place in his head.

Everyone is in danger and each floor has new horrors to face. This is the dreaded 6th floor where the aliens send in hunters to cull the crawlers. So not only does Carl and Donut have mobs and bosses trying to kill them they also have random syndicate citizens joining into the fray. But in true Carl fashion, he is going to turn this floor on it's head.

Such a fun book and series. How can I only have 2 more published works to read before I'm done :( Donut is Appalled. Good thing there was a pet contest so I could see Mongo pageant style.

There were some really big surprises at the end as well...my heart was elated and then devastated within the epilogues.

I'm trying to savior the last two books but who are we kidding. Once you pop you can't stop!

New Achievement!!!

NEW ACHIEVEMENT!!! The earth has been basically destroyed and most of humanity with it. In Carl's Doomsday Scenario, the second addition of Dungeon Crawler Carl, two of Earth's remaining champions have made it Level III. What do they win? A trip to the circus, a quest to figure out how some street workers died, an encounter with someone who collects way to many beanie babies, a new member to the team and a chance to blow up...stuff! Hopefully they remember to only blow up the bad guys and not themselves.

“Maybe we should have tested them first,” she said.
“That’s what they’re gonna put on my tombstone.”
"Don't be silly Carl. The don't give us tombstones here."

I've been hearing about the Dungeon Crawler Carl books for the last few months and I totally fell for the hype and decided to try this series out. I was a little skeptical because I've read a few other LitRPG books and really struggled to get through them. But give me a guy who got trapped with no pants and a cat in a dungeon as they fight for their lives in survivor type competitions and I couldn't read the first book fast enough. Carl's Doomsday Scenario was just as much fun and let's just say I'm ready to join a fan club for the Court of Princess Donut.

The Royal Court of Princess Donut is moving up the leader board. The former show cat, turned sentient is having a hay day with all the new followers and her very own pet Veloso Raptor named Mongo. She is a show stealer and the face and charisma part of the team. Carl is the wacky idea guy who accidentally blows stuff up. Together they are one of the hottest groups of crawlers on this season of Dungeon Crawlers, where contestants try to make it to the final level to win the mineral rights to the earth. This season is moving along quickly and there is only a 8 days for Carl and Donut to level up, kill a bunch of NPCs and find the stairs that will take them to the next level.
“Cats don’t drink cocktails,” I said.
“Cats don’t shoot lasers from their eyes either, Carl, but here we are. Mama needs a night off.”

Great descriptions of characters, interesting fight scenario's and the musing of Princess Donut are just the combo to punch the reader in the face and dare them not to have a good time. A snarky AI that is running the game and may have a foot fetish just adds to the fun as it reads the new achievements, gear descriptions and adds commentary when the pooh is going to hit the fan.

There are also bigger problems in the galaxy that are teased out here and there. There are alien factions and some infighting it seems. On the verge of bankruptcy the Aliens running the game are speeding everything up in hopes of making a lot of money off the Earth. This is going to make this dungeon crawl one of the most interesting of all time and the entire galaxy it seems is tuning in to see how it all plays out. I'm really interested in seeing how much of the turmoil outside the dungeon we get to see in upcoming books.

I think this is going to be a great entry point if you are looking to try out LitRPG to see if you like them. As someone who played World of Warcraft for years I found things I completely loved about the book. If you have ever enjoyed a MMORPG this will probably be a fun ride for you too.

What did I just read? I'm not even sure but I devoured it and can see why this is a series that so many people are talking about.

1 - Destroyed Earth turned into a competition

2 - Talking Cat sidekick

3 - Random weirdness and achievements

4 - Fight for survival + T.V. show appearances

5 - Snazzy catchphrase

I don't know why it was so much fun, but it was. I couldn't put this down once I started and I giggled out loud multiple times. Carl and Princess Donut are a hoot. I used to play World of Warcraft for years and so many of the things in this just spoke to me. I'm not sure it would be quite as enjoyable if you don't have some kind of gaming experience in your background.

“Did we really just start a meth war between the goblins and the llamas?”

The Earth is destroyed and Carl just be happenstance was standing outside with no shoes or pants went anyone indoors was crushed. He ends up going down into the Dungeon when the doors open to get out of the cold with the prissy Persian cat he was trying to save. One thing leads to another and the Royal Court of Princess Donut is formed. There has never been a raiding party quite like this one.

With random achievements being yelled happily at you, an AI that might be favoring you because of a foot fetish and an endless supply of loot with no pants in them Carl and Princess Donut are quickly becoming fan favorites. I don't blame the fans because I couldn't get enough either.

This was a perfect read for when I just wanted to have a ridiculous good time and didn't need to put a lot of thought into it. There is a bigger story going on between the aliens that a running this planet takeover and some factions that might be up against them but that is a side hustle that I don't think is going to be solved anytime soon.

Let's just say I'm hooked and looking for group!

Houston we have a problem...I only found Dungeon Crawler Carl a few weeks ago and I'm already done with book 4 and the 5th floor. And lets be honest I've really already read book 5 because I just couldn't wait. That means I'll be out of books soon...and what will I do without a weekly dose of Princess Donut, Mongo and Carl.

Matt Dinniman, what have you done to me with your series with fantastic plucky characters, a more and more unstable AI, a competition like survival game that is televised and some big intergalactic shenanigans. Anytime I start one of these books I just can't stop listening to them, since the audio is fantastic.

After all the plucky humans banded together in the last book to beat the level, the alien show producers have come up with a way to separate them all and "randomly" placed bubbles. Each has four quadrants and you need to basically capture the flag in all four before the stairs down to the next level will be available. Mongo is appalled!!! One of the quadrants is underwater and Donut is adamant she is not going into the water. She has yet to learn she can't say stuff like that out loud, the AI is always listening and it's sense of humor can be a touch sadistic, just ask Carl who still doesn't have any pants.
“Spoiler alert. Nobody is going to read your autobiography disguised as a space vampire and minotaur romance. You and every other half-wit out there with a nearby Starbucks and a laptop is writing the same bile. What you’re really doing is inadvertently live-blogging the story of human mediocrity,”

Carl is ramping up the violence and his ingenuity. If nothing else he is proving that the human spirit is hard to crush and he will find a way to break them all. Donut is hilarious as always and Katia grew on me quite a bit this time around.

I'm eating these up like a googly-eyed walrus slurping spaghetti at a clown convention! (<---Thanks Grok)

New characters, new quests, an encounter with a god and a talking sex doll head just to round out some of the ridiculousness that makes these so much fun. Also an Octoshark!!!

With that interesting reveal at the end, I can't wait to see what is in store for Humanities last hope on the 6th floor. Happy Hunting everyone.

War come to a woman and a village

Revisado: 02-02-25

I have very conflicted feelings about this book. One one hand the overall story is really good. There is a great tradition and history to Kaigen that I loved learning about. The main characters were complex and showed so much growth I wasn't expecting. For those reasons I would recommend this book.

***“Wholeness, she had learned, was not the absence of pain but the ability to hold it.”***

The Sword of Kaigen reminded me of a Samurai type culture with the addition of some magic. The families that live there have a long tradition of fighting for the Empire against it's enemies. They are the wall the enemy crashes against and have held back the tides of war for a long time. So long that most have forgotten the power of the families there.

Misaki, was once a fighter when she was away at school. She loved it, was great at it and gave it up to be a wife and have a family. She married Takashi, one of the greatest swordmasters of all time, who can make a blade of ice sharper than and man made blade. When we first meet her she is unhappy and a shadow of the woman she could be. The reader follows her on her journey to reclaim the power she set down and find a path to a kind of happiness that walks through so many tragedies.

This was a hard read for me. The Ranganese invade Kaigen and the atrocities are what you would expect in an invasion. It was so heavy and sad and places that multiple times I set down the book and didn't pick it back up for a few days to clear my head. There are so many losses and some hit extremely hard, that I wasn't sure I wanted to continue. I will give it to M.L. Wang that she created characters I really cared about and that made the happenings in the invasion and after all the harder on my summer heart.

Wang made characters with holes and bad judgement. I was rooting for Misaki to find the warrior she once was and I was not disappointed. Wang also made me care and forgive characters that I didn't think I would. Like most relationship issues there are two sides and no one carries all of the blame. I didn't think I'd come to like Takeru but in the end I loved his character arc. Sometimes you just need a good fight with your spouse to clear the air.

My small issues with the story came after the main battle, the pacing was off and there was a bunch of stuff thrown in about Misaki's past acquaintances/crime fighters and what they are doing now. It seemed like maybe there were other books set in this world that the reader should have been familiar with to understand her past and those characters. I really didn't see any though so it was just some fluff that didn't seem to need to be there. I think Misaki's closure with her past could have flowed a lot better, but my heart was rang out by that point so I might be a little to critical here.

Overall, if you want a story with some bite and can handle the ravages of an invasion this is going to be a great story for you. Filled with character depth and steeped in lore and culture so much of the story was fantastic if brutal.

Narration:

I'm so glad I listened to this book. There are so many Japanese type words and phrases that it was more enjoyable to have someone else decipher them for me. Andrew Tell was fantastic as a narrator. He captured every emotion, every horror and every tenderness so well. He was a new to me narrator but I could see easily why he has over 200 titles to his portfolio. His pacing, emotion and character separation were fantastic.

I'm not sure that Cozy Fantasy is a good genre for me. I want the drama, daring and intrigue in my Fantasy. There should be mighty obstacles to overcome as you gather your questing party. Every challenge fell so flat and was incredibly easy with no real conflict or sense of danger to it.

Tao, is a foreigner in a foreign land. Well kind of, she has lived in the land since she was small and forgotten most of her life in Shin and the language of that land. Instead she travels along with a small wagon telling little fortunes to people and then moving along before there is talk of them coming true. She has been on her own for awhile but starts to collect a few people along the way to travel with her.

They are going town to town, making a little coin and trying to find the daughter one of the travelers. It is a bit routine and I really thought the father of the little girl would be more anxious or on them to move along faster so they could find his daughter, but it was so in the background of the story that very one dimensional emotions encompassed this huge thing. All of the emotions seemed very flat for the entire book.

I found this felt more like a middle grade book, with easy solutions and not much depth to characters and their motivations. If you liked Legends and Latte's then this could be something you enjoy.

Phyllis Ho is a new to me narrator and it seems like she is just getting going as a voice actor. I think her voice fit Tao well. I found that the story meandered and that could have been the narrator or it might have been the writing, hard to say. But, I would have liked if the narration moved along a little faster. I needed to bump of the speed and listened at 1.75x speed for most of the book, my usual is 1.5x

A Witch and Some Demons Walk into a Market...

Revisado: 01-05-25

Hell of a Witch, the second book of the Tear Down Heaven series, picks up a month after the event in Hell for Hire. It has a slow burn romance, underdog fight against the big bad and a found family that is amazing. The Queen of Wrath is out to thwart the Princes of Heaven and while you might think we would be on the Prince’s side we definitely are not since they, and their master, took over heaven millennia ago and our Heroine is trying to save her people, rescue her sisters and take down the wizard that tore down heaven.

Bex, Demon Queen of Wrath, finally has enough allies to try and do something big in the resistance against Gilgamesh. Adrian has come up with a plan to deal a devastating blow to the all powerful wizard. With some of the coolest witchy tricks I’ve read about, he and Bex sneak into the heart of enemy territory to see what they can learn about one of the anchors to Heaven. However, when things don’t go quite right it puts a huge strain on their budding relationship. Bex must make some difficult choices between being a Queen and head of a rebellion or the personal wants she has in her life. It doesn’t help that her ring/sword, Drox, is talking in her head and only cares about fighting.

Rachel Aaron has come up with a fantastically interesting and original world, with a extraordinary backstory. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like this and love the world that she has created. Hell of a Witch is more action packed and faster paced than Hell for Hire and also sprinkles in more worldbuilding and backstory to flesh out the characters and the world. I enjoyed how the reader is fed some of the information and shown some of the concepts that help make this story feel like a real place. Bex and Adrian both shine in this book, but Adrian stole the show a little with his potential parentage reveal and new dealings with a pretty powerful crow.

I love found families and Bex has a great one with the core group of demons who follow her. Nemini, a void demon, is hilarious to me when she is one the page. Her quips and dialogue remind me of the sad robot in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Having a lust demon and a war demon on your side doesn’t hurt either. They didn’t quite as much page time as Adrian and his feline familiar were the stars of the book. But they brought some good comic relief and badass fighting skills to the story.

Overall this is an entertaining a easy read and great for when you want a slow burn romance and a fight against all the odds.

“But I’m happy to hear you say we’re friends. I was worried you only stuck with me out of pity.”

Nemini looked as close to insulted as Bex had ever seen. “How could you doubt? We value each other’s well being despite knowing that life is meaningless and everything will well end. There is no name for that folly other than friendship.”

Narration

Nicholas Cain is a solid narrator. He captured Adrian and Bex well in the story and I was able to distinguish the other characters well throughout. His voice worked for an unusual witch of the body and he added some mystical charm to Adrian’s character. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

Morally gray cast of characters that will steal your heart or make you add more Iron into your life to protect it. Such is the nature of darker faery stories.

“whatever you love, that is your weakness”

Kaye and Roiben are back to being the focal point of the story again. Roiben is about to be coronated as the King of the Unseelie court. This isn't something he ever wanted but he will do his duty to keep the few he cares about safe. At least that is what he was trying to do until Kaye ruined all of his plans to keep her out of the line of fire in an upcoming war.

With some bad alcohol consuming decisions Kaye has ended up on an impossible quest for the new Unseelie King and will not be able to see him again until the quest is complete. Roiben's goal was to keep her out of the mess he is in, especially since he is not sure he will survive it.

“He had known only two rulers, both great and neither good. He did not know how to be any kind of King nor how to win, other than to be even more ruthless than they."

Kaye on the other had ends up in the middle of everything accidentally. The Seelie Queen will use her if she can against Rioben.

I enjoyed this book the most of the series. She Kaye is a bit impetuous and makes some increasingly bad decisions, but she is overall likeable. No matter what she will try to protect Rioben, even if her place in his life is unclear. With the help of Corny they will find a way to get out of all the trouble Kaye has gotten herself into.

I liked seeing some of the characters from Valiant again too. Luis tries to help Kaye and Corny, but we also get a few cameo's from some of the other main characters from the last book.

The conclusion to this series is one I found fitting and satisfying. It wasn't all cherry blossoms and softness, but had just enough jagged edges to make it seem all the more real and a fitting conclusion to a story in the Fae realm.

Narration

While not perfect, I got confused on who was talking some of the time, this is a solid performance by Lauryn Allman. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.
