Well documented and well told story of a disappointingly dark underbelly of US society seemingly abetted by US institutions.

One of the best historical fictions books / series ever written. I revisit this series almost every year.

Sir Alan Dale is the medieval version of Conrwell's 'Richard Sharpe'. Great characters, great adventures, and great history. This series has become one of my favorites!

Emma of Normandy is little known but is the link that provided William the bastard turned conquerer a claim to England. This is a fascinating story of England 50 years prior to its Norman conquest.

Donald's story is an authentic view of the time-period and the characters that could have been the genesis of the Robyn Hood legend. He captures the larger historical background of 12th century England and vividly constructs events in Sherwood Forest that make this book a gripping and thoroughly enjoyable listen. Worth the credit...and the next book in this series is now on my wish list!

Gripping story that really illuminates the fascinating politics and personalities of mid-evil Europe leading up to and through the third crusade. Highly recommend.

Would you listen to And the Mountains Echoed again? Why?

Yes. This book was more about family relationships, choices, and commitment than a 'page turning' historical fiction novel. The story itself is nicely woven together and, as good writers do, puts meaningful words to describe complex feelings and behaviors that provided perspective for me personally.

If you could sum up Ironfire in three words, what would they be?

Great story, characters, and descriptions of the age. I haven't enjoyed a book this much since I finished Ken Follet's 'Pillars' saga. David Ball is now on my short list of favorite historical fiction writers. I highly recommend this book.

What did you love best about Island of Vice?

Provided a very good understanding of turn of the century (19th to 20th) NY and national politics, morals, and how Theodore Roosevelt tried to put NYC on a better path against overwhelming odds.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Island of Vice?

Anecdotes captured from letters, journals, etc. detailing Roosevelt's hands on approach to changing the cutlure in the NYPD.

Any additional comments?

Excellent book that is very readable/listenable. I have read several TR books and thoroughly enjoyed the detailed material focusing on TR's time as a Police Commissioner and the insight it provided into big city machine politics. While this book is entertaining, it is not a historical fiction nor is it intended to read like a novel. Bottom line, this book kept me entertained during 15hrs of commute and exercise time and I was smarter at the end; it was worth my credit and I have recommended to others.
