Historia
There is another school for children who fall through doors and fall back out again. It isn't as friendly as Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children. And it isn't as safe. When Eleanor West decided to open her school, her sanctuary, her "Home for Wayward Children", she knew from the beginning that there would be children she couldn’t save; when Cora decides she needs a different direction, a different fate, a different prophecy, Miss West reluctantly agrees to transfer her to the other school.

too close to home,
Revisado: 11-03-22
like all books in this series, I love this book so much. and having a whole story with just Cora was amazing. she's the perfect pov, clear minded, strong willed and an absolute hero. and she's fat, like me! fat and athletic!
but joining her mind, hearing the cruelty from in the outside echoing inside was hard. worth it but hard.
no. my own complaint is how the narrator does Sumi's voice. she should have been bright and sharp, like the tip if a sucked on candy cane. instead the reader has her slow and dull. there's not manic glee in sumi, or viciousness.

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

folk horror extraordinaire
Revisado: 07-27-22
like all t. kingfishers horror novels this feels familiar- the isolation, the evils of Mouse's gramma manifesting in her hoarder house, the useless cop- but T has turned the old tropes on its head.
the descriptions of both the fantastical and mundane are evocative but not overly wordy. you get to see in your minds eye the effigies, the doll room, even Bongo.
and the reader is pitch perfect. she's got Mouse's voice and Roxy's to a T.

amazing voice acting- although two of the voices are very annoying which matches the characters very well- and each character is distinct and easily recognized.

Historia
One Christmas Eve in a small hollow in Boone County, West Virginia, struggling songwriter Jesse Walker witnesses a strange spectacle: seven devilish figures chasing a man in a red suit toward a sleigh and eight reindeer. When the reindeer leap skyward, taking the sleigh, devil men, and Santa into the clouds, screams follow. Moments later, a large sack plummets back to earth, a magical sack that thrusts the down-on-his-luck singer into the clutches of the terrifying Yule Lord, Krampus.

A new Yule tradition
Revisado: 12-25-17
Not only is the a beautiful, odd story (Brom is an illustrator too so get the text book also) but funny and moving. Jesse is an infinitely likeable screw up, and Linda is smart strong and does not fall into the “my woman doesn’t understand me” trope. She understands him better than he does himself. Krampus and the belsnickels are scary and kind in equal order, and Santa is a oddly frightening but broken character.
The narrator is superb! I honestly will listen to chapters I’ve already read just to hear his character voices!

A journey of death
Revisado: 11-06-17
This book was amazing. A good audio book should provide something to the experience- be it voice acting, sound effects, etc- and this totally delivers! Caitlyn’s asides are perfect, as is her imitation of calls to worship.
The book itself is inspiring. At times it made me sad, happy, even silly. Caitlyn does not exoticize or fetishize the cultures she visited, merely experiences them and tells their death traditions. She learns from each and brings us along.

I adore everyone in this this series but for some reason I've always loved Dajas stories the most. Her trader culture is fascinating and her straight forward no nonsense attitude is refreshing. The full cast presentation is great although sometimes the three girl voice actresses can get confusing when the author doesn't present them when they speak, like 'Daja said...' The dialogue just starts

Historia
Of especially naughty children it is sometimes said, "They must have been raised by wolves." The Incorrigible children actually were. Turning sixteen is a bittersweet occasion for Miss Penelope Lumley: Her parents remain disappointingly absent, and her perfectly nice young playwright friend, Simon Harley-Dickinson, has not been heard from since he went to visit his ailing great-uncle Pudge in the old sailors' home in Brighton.

Distressing and delightful in equal measures
Revisado: 02-05-16
Like the previous books Penny is pitted against the alleged Judge Quinesby, but this time it is over the soul of Penny's beloved Swanburn school for poor bright females. Penny and her charges the Incorrigibles must face down cats, irate judges, greedy and cruel baronesses and a strangely maternal lady Ashton all on site of Swanburn, which is in danger of loosing its name, it's motto and worst of all its feminist spirit Agatha Swanburn innuendo it with. For those who like who have grown to love Swanburn in Penny's telling, seeing it attacked by Quinsby and baroness Hoover will be most distressing. However be as the incorrigibles, and preserver! The children keep penny's hopes up with their sweetness, trust and passion for learning, and so too must we. For by the end although not all secrets are learned- there's more books after all- many friends are rescued, families are reunited and a curse becomes less of one.

Absolutely delightful!
Revisado: 05-14-15
I love terry, and his discworld series, especially those revolving around Sam vimes and the city guard.
My only complaint is that because the books do not have chapters so much as simply breaks the division of the audiobooks "chapters" does not line up w the narrative breaks; they just fall in the middle from what I can tell, making finding a spot to stop very difficult. All they need to do is pay a tiny bit of attention to where they put the breaks.

Thanks to the efforts of Miss Penelope Lumley, their plucky governess, Alexander, Beowulf, and Cassiopeia are much more like children than wolf pups now. They are accustomed to wearing clothes. They hardly ever howl at the moon. And for the most part, they resist the urge to chase squirrels up trees.

Revisado: 02-25-15
This series is on par with the classic Jeeves and Wooster series, if jeezes had been the narrator and if Bertie had been tripled, and raised by wolves. It is silly and whimsical and uplifting.
The narrators style is pitch perfect for the series, and I'm terribly disappointed they have not produced the 4th audiobook, although I will endeavor to read them to myself in her voice.
Truly a classic for all ages!

Wow
Revisado: 02-13-15
I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. I plowed through it in a few days, every single moment I had free I listened to it. And after just finishing the first book I gleefully downloaded the next one and will starting it soon.
Yes the reveal isn't much of a surprise, BUT I didn't care. From Cinders perspective, her whole life experiences as being deemed worthless its not cheap or hollow. And frankly I'm excited to find out how she deals w everything. Prince Kai is a fully realized person instead of a wish fulfillment proxy for the audience and even cinders step family are aloud to be humans instead of simply jerks for no reason.
Anyways clearly I loved it.
