Historia
The folklore roots of Christmas under its many other guises (Yule, the Winter Solstice, Saturnalia) is examined in a different, darker light. The Winter Solstice is a time to be afraid. It’s the shortest day of the year, the longest night. In some parts of the world, the sun doesn’t rise at all. It’s dark, and we have to wonder if the sun will ever come back at all. Christmas has always been creepy and with The Fright Before Christmas, you'll see that side. This is a book for everyone who loves a little darkness around the holidays.

A modern retelling of historical Christmas stories
Revisado: 12-05-24
This was, perhaps a little more informal than I expected... but still well written and read. It was engaging, and I find myself very tempted to listen to it again. I appreciated the number of Christmas monsters and traditions

Historia
When you think about Christmas, you likely picture mangers, glowing fireplaces, sweet carolers, and snow-blanketed hills. But behind all this bright magic, there’s something much darker lurking in the shadows. In The Dead of Winter, Cambridge-trained historian Sarah Clegg delves deep into the folklore of the Christmas season in Europe, detailing the way its terrifying and often debaucherous past continues to haunt and entertain us now in the twenty-first century.

Fantastic Holiday fare!
Revisado: 11-23-24
I really wish the entire book had been read by the author (she reads the intro and epilogue), as I preferred her vocals... and it would have been fitting given this book is a sort of "travelog" of her research.
Regardless... this is a fantastic little tomb collecting all of the "Christmas monsters" of legend and myth. A must for the season!

Amazon can ROT for canceling this series. 😣
Revisado: 07-19-24
Beautiful story... from a beautiful and well fleshed out world. I can't believe Amazon canceled this series (but kept Wheel of Time and... *gags* Rings of Power. 🙄
This is the prequel story of Tourmaline... and it adds so much to her character that was only hinted at in the series itself. Highly recommend this short story! 💖

Historia
The horse Jim was known as Beautiful Jim Key from the moment he stepped into the American spotlight in 1897 at age eight until his death in 1912. This horse was beloved for his remarkable intelligence, cultivated by human kindness and patience. No less extraordinary was the man who trained Jim, Dr. William Key of Shelbyville, Tennessee, a former slave who in his life had seen horrific cruelty toward humans and animals. Bill Key was a self-schooled veterinarian and Black entrepreneur who refused to use force in any guise while breaking and training horses.

Fascinating bit of (almost) lost history!
Revisado: 06-26-24
Before Seabiscuit, Secretariat or Man o' War... there was Jim Key; an educated horse! This book is a wonderful bit of (almost) lost history: the story of a horse and his trainer... who helped spark the "be kind to animals" movement.
Well researched and written... this story is a much for all who are interested in animal history.

Historia
Dragons are common in the backwater kingdom of Bellemontagne, coming in sizes from mouse-like vermin all the way up to castle-smashing monsters. Gaius Aurelius Constantine Heliogabalus Thrax (who would much rather people call him Robert) has recently inherited his deceased dad’s job as a dragon catcher/exterminator, a career he detests with all his heart in part because he likes dragons, feeling a kinship with them, but mainly because his dream has always been the impossible one of transcending his humble origin to someday become a prince’s valet.

Peter S. Beagle gives us another wonderful work of fantasy! Full of twists and turns... this tale plays with various fantasy tropes, and turns many on their heads. I only wish it was longer. I'd love to play more in this world. 💖

Fantastic ending, to a fascinating story!
Revisado: 05-16-24
I'm sad this story has come to an end. Though I know there is one more volume (a tangential sequel), I'm sad to leave the world of Lady Trent and the Dragons! I do hope the author gives us more in this world soon! It is so well crafted and believable... I'd love to explore it more. :)

Even those who take no interest in the field of dragon naturalism have heard of Lady Trent's expedition to the inhospitable deserts of Akhia. Her discoveries there are the stuff of romantic legend, catapulting her from scholarly obscurity to worldwide fame. The details of her personal life during that time are hardly less private, having provided fodder for gossips in several countries.

Revisado: 04-12-24
I've been listening through this series, to refamaliarize myself with the story, as I move on to the final two novels to finish it off. I just adore the narrator, and the story & characters the author has created. I'm looking forward to moving into uncharted territory with the next two novels!

Historia
Three years after her fateful journeys through the forbidding mountains of Vystrana, Mrs. Camherst defies family and convention to embark on an expedition to the war-torn continent of Eriga, home of such exotic draconian species as the grass-dwelling snakes of the savannah, arboreal tree snakes, and, most elusive of all, the legendary swamp-wyrms of the tropics. The expedition is not an easy one.

But such study offers rewards beyond compare: to stand in a dragon's presence, even for the briefest of moments - even at the risk of one's life - is a delight that, once experienced, can never be forgotten….All the world, from Scirland to the farthest reaches of Eriga, know Isabella, Lady Trent, to be the world's preeminent dragon naturalist.
