Historia
In John Scalzi's re-imagining of H. Beam Piper's 1962 sci-fi classic Little Fuzzy, written with the full cooperation of the Piper Estate, Jack Holloway works alone for reasons he doesnt care to talk about. Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorps headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporations headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, thats not up for discussion.

Excellent story on an interesting idea
Revisado: 02-01-23
A really well told story really well narrated in this case. A very interesting idea to explore - what makes an animal sentient and what would we do if we found sentient life while trying to exploit space.
One thing that very very mildly grates in the audiobook version is the number of times the word "said" appears - I know that some writers are advocates of only using "said" for speech, but I think that this works much better on the page where it just helps the reader to keep track of who's speaking than when it's audible.

File under "of its time"?
Revisado: 04-27-22
As someone who has enjoyed DB in the 2020s, this wasn't really something that added much for me. I don't feel that he's at the height of his powers here, and just as I was contemplating listening to the second half "some other time", the material taking just the slightest nudge towards the first side. Not finished. I'll look for something that reflects a later stage in his development.

You may know W. Kamau Bell from his new Emmy-nominated hit show on CNN, United Shades of America. Or maybe you've read about him in The New York Times, which called him "the most promising new talent in political comedy in many years." Or maybe from The New Yorker fawning over his brand of humor writing: "Bell's gimmick is intersectional progressivism: he treats racial, gay, and women's issues as inseparable."

I really appreciate this title by W Kamau Bell. It's an interestingly told story following a non- linear path through his life surrounding his big advances both personal and professional. A great listen.

Historia
Maria Bamford speaks in many voices. No, She is not an impressionist, unless you count the stellar impression of her mom. Maria feels her high-pitched voice does not command respect, as a result, she has taken on many voices to help her tell her wickedly funny jokes. Decidedly off-beat, Maria has a wide-eyed innocence that comes shining through on this, her debut recording.

Great, thought - provoking book
Revisado: 07-22-16
Some books read well as a whole, some read well in key scenes and some read well sentence-by-sentence. Speaker for the Dead does them all. Really enjoyable and thought-provoking. Do read Ender's Game first; the context is key.
Don't worry too much if you think you've already guessed where the book is headed early on. Having reached the end, I don't think that anything is passed on to the reader that wasn't intended by the author.

From the outrageously filthy and oddly innocent comedienne and star of the powerful 2015 film I Smile Back Sarah Silverman comes a memoir—her first book—that is at once shockingly personal, surprisingly poignant, and still pee-in-your-pants funny. If you like Sarah's television show The Sarah Silverman Program, or memoirs such as Chelsea Handler's Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea and Artie Lange's Too Fat to Fish, you'll love The Bedwetter.

Emperor Mollusk. Intergalactic Menace. Destroyer of Worlds. Conqueror of Other Worlds. Mad Genius. Ex-Warlord of Earth. Not bad for a guy without a spine. But what's a villain to do after he's done... everything. With no new ambitions, he's happy to pitch in and solve the energy crisis or repel aliens invaders should the need arise, but if he had his way, he'd prefer to be left alone to explore the boundaries of dangerous science. Just as a hobby, of course. Retirement isn't easy though.

Historia
Nate Silver built an innovative system for predicting baseball performance, predicted the 2008 election within a hair’s breadth, and became a national sensation as a blogger - all by the time he was 30. He solidified his standing as the nation's foremost political forecaster with his near perfect prediction of the 2012 election. Silver is the founder and editor in chief of the website FiveThirtyEight. Drawing on his own groundbreaking work, Silver examines the world of prediction, investigating how we can distinguish a true signal from a universe of noisy data.

Good philosophy on data
Revisado: 04-01-16
Nate gives a great view of how big data can and should work (or not). I particularly liked that while some case studies had clear central messages, he avoided reductionism and reapplied lessons from other chapters.

The peace is kept by a team of smooth, well-dressed negotiators called The Men in Fancy Suits. Meanwhile a young girl is caught in the middle and thinks the whole thing is ridiculous. Enjoyable story. Narration occasionally off track
Revisado: 03-03-16
A good story that's more conventional than David Wong's previous novels. The narrator provides mostly good, clearly contrastable voices, but there are a memorable number of times when she clearly gives the wrong emphasis in a sentence. I actually think this is more the fault of the director, as the narrator puts in emphases in these cases that seem entirely appropriate until you hear the whole sentence. A director should be calling for a retake at that point. Not constant, but for someone who's not that picky, it was often enough to be a distraction.
