At first I thought this book would be useful and instructive, practical and pertinent. About halfway through everything takes a sharp, left turn and never comes back into FOCUS. It’s clear why the author had to take a vacation away from social media - as referenced at the beginning of the book…he clearly has been thoroughly ideologically inculcated with the most vogue of contemporary hot topics. Don’t waste your credit on this one.

I can’t say it’s quite what I was expecting - but, this easy to understand read unpacks the journey of the Villanova Wildcats men’s basketball team and staff to the National Championship. It’s lots of story and sprinklings of leadership lessons. What a privilege it would’ve been to play for this coach and for these teams.

Epstein does a nice job balancing groundbreaking science with insight and intrigue. He keeps the humanity center stage throughout rather than drifting too far into beakers and vials. Highly recommend

I have recommended this book to at least a dozen people. It is fantastic and James Clear’s way of teaching these highly useful concepts is effective, concise, and refined. Great book - truly.

However - Please hire the appropriate professionals to read the content. The book itself talks about knowing one’s strengths and gifts and skills and natural inclinations; and there are people who are gifted to make written text into gorgeous, engaging musical thought when spoken. To borrow from Mr Clear, you wouldn’t ask Michael Phelps to compete in the Olympics as a marathon runner and expect the same results.

Great messages, Mr Holiday - hire a professional reader

I can only imagine how good this audiobook would be if it were read by a professional reader/voice professional instead of the author. I enjoy Mr Holiday’s podcasts and talks, but this is a whole other skill. The reading is not dynamic, it is flat - and that’s not some stoic virtue, it’s just not artful. So pay the right person to do it if you really really care about the content instead of the credit. The afterword as a whole makes me doubt whether the book is about Mr Holiday ultimately, but I appreciated what was said for the most part up to that point.

Much like Cowher himself, this book strikes at the emotional center of a life full of meaningful labor and relationships by taking the simple facts of what happened and piecing them together into a beautiful tapestry. It’s simple. It’s beautiful. Full of determination, deference, and surprisingly delicate handling of life’s devastating realities.

Narrator even sounds a little like Cowher, but not so much that non-Yinzers wouldn’t understand.
I highly recommend - Steelers, football, sports fan or not.
