Satisfying Conclusion to the 3-Book Series
Revisado: 11-03-22
Book 3 continues right where book 2 just seemed to end too quickly and incomplete, as if books 2-3 could have been one big bigger book. I really enjoyed the whole story playing out, and side stories that develop. If this was a movie, this book has the bigger set pieces and some of the epic scenes.
It was a satisfying conclusion that makes me content to have listened to the series, and could listen again. But I'll always wish for more when I'm invested in all the characters. The epilog helped too. But it made me miss what they could have continued in a different direction in a book 4. Sad it ended, wish there was more, but a good ride.

Seems Like Half a Book, But a Good Continuation
Revisado: 11-03-22
I loved book 1, and this continues the story. More problems seem to be introduced, which made me a little dissatisfied at first, but it was a good story that bridges the big arc of the 3-book series. But unlike the first book, this sort of just ends where clearly you just continue onto book 3. Books 2-3 could have been one larger book. But content-wise, it was still good, and satisfying to complete with book 3.
Pacing was a little uneven, same as book 1, where some parts play out over a while, and other parts jump along almost too quickly. I think I had to back to the chapter list to see if I missed something like it just jumped to the end of the book :) . I still liked it, and really enjoyed the full series.

Historia
In the first installment of the A Fire Beneath the Skin trilogy, the city of Klaar has never fallen. No enemy has ever made it across the Long Bridge or penetrated the city's mighty walls. Even when a powerful invading army shows up at the gates, the duke and his daughter, Rina Veraiin, are certain that it poses little threat. But they are cruelly betrayed from within and, in a horrific spasm of violence, the city is brought to its knees.

Great Heroine Tale
Revisado: 11-03-22
I really liked how strong the lead female character turned out to be. It seemed like a slightly awkward start, but I really got into the story and was a great, sufficiently complete story for a book one. At first it was a little hard to remember who all the characters were, but by mid-story it whittled down to those more easy to remember and follow along. There are a number of side stories that will converge sufficiently, and were pretty good in their own right.
Pacing was a little odd, as was in the whole series. You think you know the velocity of the book, then some things play out for a while, and suddenly you are closer to the end than you realize. The book flew by for me. I loved it. I was happy with the 3-book series.
I really am not looking for sex in books, but this series has some here or there. But it is pretty brief. This is by far a fantasy / heroine adventure, not a romance. But connections are established and material enough to the story.

Good Continuation, But Weak Ending
Revisado: 06-19-22
This seems as epic as the prior book, where the fight continues in logical progression of the main story line. There are surprises along the way, but not everything is the same in talents & characters that underpinned the story-line until now. It is missing some of the charm of prior books, but it seems to be woven into the story purposefully, and fits the story.
I'm sure large story arches are hard to bring into a a nice landing that leaves all readers satisfied. But for me it just sputtered out at the end unlike prior books. I think the author got too much into his head this time and lost some of what made this fun for me at the end. But to me it is simply that from books 1-4 my love & enthusiasm for the series was a 10/10. But with books 1-5 of the series, it is more like a 7. Fitting or not, this book ended up detracting from my love of the series. But don't skip it by any means.

Epic & Gets to the Heart of the Main Storyline
Revisado: 06-19-22
This time we're really going into the center of the action and the fight between the two sides. This time it seemed central to the main storyline & feels epic. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Narration was excellent as usual. I didn't want the book to end.

Depth in a Direction I Didn't Expect
Revisado: 06-19-22
It is good that I really can't predict where these books are going to go. They seem to just start somewhere, go deep in some direction I didn't totally expect, and derive an interesting story that almost seems like a tangent to what seemed like the mainline story. As part of the larger series, it makes sense. I really enjoyed learning more about the Knights of Crystallia and the challenges that unfolded.

Historia
So now you've heard all about me, Alcatraz Smedry, and how I was swept out of my life in your normal world and into the fight against the Librarians (jerks!). After being all heroic and stuff in that tale, I didn’t expect to charge headlong into enemy territory: the Library of Alexandria, where I—and my grandpa and my grouchy bodyguard Bastille and her even grouchier mother and some weirdly gifted cousins—run across the Curators (ghosts who will gladly help you check out a book as long as you don’t mind giving up your mortal soul) and some new nasty Librarians who hate our guts.

Unique Continuation of the First
Revisado: 06-19-22
it isn't as fresh as the first book was for me in the series, but it is a solid continuation that never goes where I expect. The abilities make me laugh, but grow weirder. Narration is as excellent as the first, and throughout the rest of the series. I like that this story seemed more original to me than the first. I quickly listened through books 1-5 available to me as of this review. The entire story line sticks with me.

OMG, Amusing, & Quotable
Revisado: 04-30-22
OMG, literally (inside joke -- near beginning of book). It is a non-serious list of amusing interesting facts, probably stuff you didn't know about their origins, and more behind them. It isn't a doctoral thesis by any means, and kind of reads like a YouTube video covering interesting facts. The author seemed to do a reasonable attempt to find and dig up background on these likely facts & background stories, enough to be an OK basis to tell us something interesting that he isn't just making up. I'm not sure if everything is scientifically verified or peer reviewed, and just maybe some of foundations & research isn't something I'd stake my life on. But it certainly is amusing and interesting if it is likely true, and if you liked a varied assortment of random things loosely stitched together.
I can really say I was surprisingly enthralled during my daily dog walk while listening on my Echo Buds. A found myself trying to remember some of it and talked about some of its points with my wife. But I like things like where ampersand came from, and the story behind a fake obituary used for a war plan and the full story that came with it.

Historia
Everything I’d known about the world was a lie. On my thirteenth birthday, I, Alcatraz Smedry (yes, I got named after a prison, don’t ask), received my inheritance: a bag of sand. And then I accidentally destroyed my foster parents’ kitchen. It’s not my fault, things just break around me, I swear! I thought the sand was a joke until evil Librarians came to steal it. You’re probably thinking, “Librarians are nice people who recommend good books,” but that’s just what they want you to think!

Wow I Loved This
Revisado: 04-30-22
I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story beginning to end. I loved the world building, I cared for all the characters, and was a magical adventure if you are into that sort of thing. And the voice performance was excellent. If you like the fantasy genre, suitable for all ages (no sex, no romance, not a lot of violence), and generally amusing and slightly comical, then this is a good listen. It is probably geared towards younger audiences (I'm an adult), but is very open for those who like things like Harry Potter & reading performances as an adult. I listened on Echo Buds while walking my dog and loved every minute of it. For the first time in a long time I found a title I didn't want to turn off when I arrived back home.
The magic system (or abilities) is rather weird, but that's its angle. And the author interjects a lot of narration as the protagonist, and works quite well and keeps it light. I had to literally check the chapter number on my Iphone after one quote that made me laugh out loud (inside story). For a few moments in the beginning it seemed to tread too familiar to Harry Potter tropes, but established its own and diverged well enough.
The first thing I did after finishing book 1 was to look up the next and remaining books in the series, other books narrated by the same narrator, and other books by the author.

What is the nature of space and time? How do we fit within the universe? How does the universe fit within us? There's no better guide through these mind-expanding questions than acclaimed astrophysicist and best-selling author Neil deGrasse Tyson. But today, few of us have time to contemplate the cosmos. So Tyson brings the universe down to Earth succinctly and clearly, with sparkling wit, in digestible chapters consumable anytime and anywhere in your busy day.

Well Explained for Non-Astrophysicists
Revisado: 04-28-22
I always love seeing Neil deGrasse Tyson and how he can explain things so well to the masses. I loved the Cosmos TV series with him, and a number of times he's been a guess on The Late Show with Steven Colbert and talking physics. This is more of the same type, but not a big repeat. However, if you are already familiar with things like Cosmos, this will not be quite as enlightening. But I still found a lot to learn and a very enjoyable listen.
This is easy to recommend to anyone who doesn't want a lecture, but likes science shows and learning about the world around them. And he speaks so well :) .
