Chicago not Boston
Revisado: 04-18-17
Great book and Ballerini is a favorite narrator. I was just disappointed that the accent used for the characters was a Boston accent despite the book being set in Chicago.

Historia
Eve Hardaway, newly single mother of one, is on a trip she’s long dreamed of - a rafting and hiking tour through the jungles and mountains of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Eve wanders off the trail, to a house in the distance with a menacing man in the yard beyond it, throwing machetes at a human-shaped target. Disturbed by the sight, Eve moves quickly and quietly back to her group, taking care to avoid being seen. As she creeps along, she finds a broken digital camera, marked with the name Teresa Hamilton.

Un-"Listenable"
Revisado: 08-29-14
Despite my admiration for Scott Brick (I am normally a huge fan of his narrations), I was unable to listen to this for more than an hour and had to read this good book instead. Both narrators used an incredibly maudlin tone that was just offensive.

Historia
Four friends, recent college graduates, caught in a terrible job market, joke about turning to kidnapping to survive. And then, suddenly, it's no joke. For two years, the strategy they devise - quick, efficient, low risk - works like a charm. Until they kidnap the wrong man. Now two groups they've very much wanted to avoid are after them - the law, in the form of veteran state investigator Kirk Stevens and hotshot young FBI agent Carla Windermere, and an organized-crime outfit looking for payback.

Character Confusion
Revisado: 05-12-14
Given that this book is the first in a series entitled Steven and Windemere, its a shame that the criminals in "The Professionals" were infinitely more likeable than Stevens or Windermere. There was nothing really wrong with Stevens or Windermere, but the book drives more empathy towards the criminals in part because so much of the book is spent from their point of view, and in part because they are fairly original. In fact the criminals display impressive, courage, strength of conviction, and love for each other. In contrast, Stevens and Windermere are formulaic. Their lives border on the mundane, their sexual tension is distatsteful given that Stevens is supposed to love his wife and kids, and it was just hard to care much about them.
Having said that, the narration is good, most of the dialogue rings true, and the plot has many interesting twists. I had just hoped for a final twist that never happened.

Historia
Ex-CIA master assassin Court Gentry has always prided himself on his ability to disappear at will, to fly below the radar and exist in the shadows - to survive as the near-mythical Gray Man. But when he takes revenge upon a former employer who betrayed him, he exposes himself to something he’s never had to face before. A killer who is just like him. Code-named Dead Eye, Russell Whitlock is a graduate of the same ultra-secret Autonomous Asset Program that trained and once controlled Gentry.

Best Gray Man yet
Revisado: 12-20-13
This is by far the best so far in the series. The characters are compelling. Captivating from start to finish.

Historia
The downloadable, digital audiobook edition of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s sensational new thriller, read by the actor Steven Pacey. Two boys, brothers, wake tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. Their kidnapper has gone, but soon he will return. Their bonds are inescapable. But there is a bottle and tar to seal it. Paper and a splinter for writing; blood for ink. A message begging for help. In Copenhagen’s cold cases division Carl Morck has received a bottle. It holds an old and decayed message, written in blood.

Wrong Book!?!?

I just downloaded "Redemption" after having listened to "A Conspiracy of Faith," also by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Interestingly, Audible is selling the IDENTICAL BOOK UNDER TWO TITLES.

Great Characters
Revisado: 12-23-11
Another Great novel from David Baldacci. The characters are compelling and the plot moves quickly. The action parts are exciting, but not overly drawn out.
The one thing that was frustrating at first was the narration. Particularly at the beginning, Jonathan Marosz draws out vowel sounds in random words for what seems like an eternity. It sounded as if he were a poet reading his own poetry rather than a thriller novel narrator reading prose. Fortunately, this was less noticeable as the story progressed. I was glad I hung in there because the story itself was well worth it.

Twelve miles above the Pacific Ocean, a missile strikes a jumbo passenger jet and leaves the flight crew either crippled or dead. This is the story of how three survivors must achieve the impossible and land the plane. Master storyteller Nelson DeMille and veteran pilot Thomas Block collaborated on Mayday, the most terrifyingly realistic air disaster thriller of all time. Also available abridged.

Temporal Confusion
Revisado: 05-11-07
What a great premise, great characters, and very good narration. Unfortunately, I found the attempt to update the technology (which is critical to the plot) from the seventies to the nineties difficult to believe, especially in the context of the formality of the dialogue, which just no longer happens. In addition, there are several other anachronisms that were not fixed. I felt that the changes made to update the story were too obviously inserted and detracted from the real drama to the point of actually being irritating.
In summary, I wish I had bought the original book so I could have experienced the characters and the drama without the distraction of awkwardly inserted updates.
