You Spent all of those books building a romance and then leave us hanging?
Revisado: 02-16-25
Let me be clear, this series is brilliant and transporting. Engrossing, compelling, and fresh plot twists at every turn. The characters are one of a kind. It should be made into a multi-movie series. But if you are going to alternate chapters between male and female protagonists who clearly love each other for SEVERAL BOOKS it should be illegal to end it this way. On a “I’d like to get to know you better maybe” kind of resolution. Change the ending in the movies please, we beg you.

Historia
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

Transporting Novel and a Timeless Women’s Peerspective
Revisado: 02-16-25
The attention to period specific detail and thought is so well done here. Loved the story although I will admit that I cringed every time she talked about the rotten smell of women’s decaying bound feet and how the men were turned on by it. Will never unhear that.

Not a good male romantic character
Revisado: 02-16-25
This author is generally great at world building in a casual but fun way and that is true of this novel. However, while in other works I’ve read the characters have been flawed yet likeable, there was nothing likeable about the male romantic lead. He was barely described in terms of appearance and personality and was basically a wet blanket of a person with little convictions. He’s distrustful of women yet mostly goes along with whatever and just watches, offering nothing of value. And the whole mean ex-girlfriend trope is so last year. As a book with a severely feminist and inclusive underpinning it just didn’t hit with that particular plot device. Guys who hate their ex girlfriends are red flags and apart from the glossed over rape plot twist (which I would say to someone who makes up stories is not the moment to be male inclusive given the current state of overwhelming violence against women- it’s giving “not all men”) he seems to be a passive man child blaming his ex for making decisions and most likely doing all the cooking and cleaning since he didn’t seem to know how. Who would want to read a romance about that guy?

Revisado: 08-05-24
This whole book and several chapters should come with some trigger warnings and I’m not even into trigger warnings. Brave for this woman to tell her story but also maybe there are some things that don’t need to be said, some things that when heard can never be forgotten and can cause secondhand trauma.

This was clearly written by a man for men who only appreciate the vague idea of women
Revisado: 08-05-24
I know this author is lauded for his success in western romances and my husband likes his work so I thought I’d give him a shot. The only real relationship between the two main characters was the “outlaw’s” desire for eatable food, a roof over his head, and a decently average looking woman by his own account. If that’s love I don’t want it.

This book went on for too long
Revisado: 08-05-24
It’s a cute concept and one thing that it has going for it is that it’s very low stakes. No need to take emotional breaks while reading. But for the love of all that is holy the voice actor needs to learn how to pronounce “g” at the end of a word, drove me crazy the whole book. And if you are going to bother having a female and male voice actor then put the extra effort to have them each read their own lines. Especially in a romance. Nothing is less sexy than a man’s voice pretending to be a women’s reading dirty lines, particularly when you know what the women’s voice is supposed to sound like from other chapters.
