Great to learn about the resistance in Denmark during WWII
Revisado: 07-21-24
Historical based novels are my favorite genre and this did not disappoint. Every country in Europe had heroes in WWII. I appreciated learning about how a few people worked to tharwt the Nazi regime via intelligence. I will look for more by this author.

Great idea just went off the rails for me
Revisado: 02-08-24
In the beginning of the book I was intrigued by the the idea that one's traumatic memories could be bound so they would not remember them anymore. If it had not turned into a story about gay men who were bound and then found each other again I would have enjoyed it more. I never appreciate hearing details of sexual encounters and wanting to memorize every freckle of someone's body. I almost stopped listening. The book ended abruptly and flat. Maybe the author couldn't figure out how to end the book so they just stopped writing.

Engaging story
Revisado: 02-08-24
I loved the mix of history, secrets, ghosts, and modern day. I also appreciated clean language and that the romance did not include torrid sexual scenes. I have toured Charleston before I was aware of the challenging strict standards that are required of restoring and preserving homes in the historic district.

Georgia Chambers has spent her life sifting through other people's pasts while trying to forget her own. But then her work as an expert on fine china - especially Limoges - requires her to return to the one place she swore she'd never revisit. It's been 13 years since Georgia left her family home on the coast of Florida, and nothing much has changed except that there are fewer oysters and more tourists.

Life can be very messy
Revisado: 11-17-23
I appreciated the authors in depth look at a eating disorder that starts in teen years and goes into the twenties with some big implications to the main character(Marlo) and her family. Marlo is working to regain control of her life, redefine herself, and overcome her distorted views and avoid unhealthy tactics she had done for years. Also shows the impact to her family and their concern and guilt for not recognizing the problems she was having. Marlo finds herself as a school guidance counselor as she helps a struggling teenager with her own identity.

His name is Matthew Walker, and he's come to spend the summer on the Cape with his parents. Why? Well, he wants to meet you before he heads off to college in the fall. Tiny detail—he didn't tell his adoptive parents about his plan. And while you hoped this day would come someday, you're so stunned, you actually faint.

Story was good but some far-fetched inclusions
Revisado: 11-13-23
I liked the perspectives of the adoptive mother, birth mother, and adoptee and all the mix of emotions that adoption can involve. Deep and painful at many levels sprinkled with love, understanding and forgiveness. What I thought got far-fetched was the birth mother having one straight sister, one gay sister, one whoring bi-sexual brother, one transgender employee, overtly sexually active parents. and a 80+ year old grandfather who is sleeping with his new girlfriend, Everybody accepts everything with grace. Possible but highly unlikely in a small town and in one family. Did not add any value to the story (distracted from the main plot really) just checked the boxes of politically acceptable and make sure you include lots of gender IDs while ignoring the challenges. . So Is everyone or every "them" happy now? Seems like that was as much of the goal as exploring the intricacies of adoption.

Thought provoking and engaging
Revisado: 08-14-23
There are a lot of WWII stories available and I love Historical Fiction but sometimes I wish there were more choices in time periods..... But I really enjoy Kelly Rimmer and she never disappoints. Beautifully written and thought provoking to once again be reminded of the terrible choices people had to make to survive unfathomable circumstances.

Better to read than listen to
Revisado: 02-13-23
This was huge undertaking. The book gives several perspectives of different socio-economic women during the French revolution. Sometimes I got confused as it seemed one story blended in to the next. I would stop the audio so I could look at the chapters and see whose story was being told. I also found it difficult because I do not speak French and without seeing the names in writen form to keep them straight--not so much the women's names as the men who played big roles in the revolution. I also missed the epilogue that historical fictions usually give that tells you what is fact and what is fiction. I struggled to finish it and could have stopped at any point without being sad about it other than the loss of understanding behind the revolution.

Great story and performances
Revisado: 12-02-22
I enjoy learning of other cultures and this book gave me some understanding of the cast system and how it determines one's opportunities and life. Makes me appreciate what I have. Lots of things to keep your interest-loss, jealousy, privilege, injustice, forgiveness and redemption. I highly recommend.
