Historia
When Guy Sajer joins the infantry full of ideals in the summer of 1942, the German army is enjoying unparalleled success in Russia. However, he quickly finds that for the foot soldier the glory of military success hides a much harsher reality of hunger, fatigue, and constant deprivation. Posted to the elite Grosse Deutschland division, he enters a violent and remorseless world where all youthful hope is gradually ground down, and all that matters is the brute will to survive.

Historia
On the day that Roswell K. Doughty graduated from Boston University, he also received a commission as a second lieutenant in the army of the United States of America. It was not until 1942 that he was called to active duty—to face some of the toughest fighting of the Second World War. He subsequently saw action in North Africa, then at the disastrous Salerno landings in Italy - where the Allied divisions involved suffered 4,000 casualties—about which the author reveals that suspected intelligence breaches led to the Allies' plans becoming known to the Germans.

Was good to read a different point of view and one that shows what anyone who has served knows not all Officers are good there are plenty of bad apples.

Historia
A rarely frank account of the US infantry experience in northern Europe, A Foot Soldier for Patton takes the listener from the beaches of Normandy through the giddy drive across France to the brutal battles on the Westwall, in the Ardennes, and finally to the conquest of Germany itself. Patton's army is best known for dashing armored attacks; its commander combining the firepower of tanks with their historic lineage as cavalry. But when the Germans stood firm, the greatest fighting was done by Patton's long undersung infantry.

Great story of an ordinary infantrymen in Europe. Didn’t pull any punches of what he thought of his officers good and bad and the things he saw.

It was called the Korengal Valley. During their fifteen-month tour, Battle Company saw more combat than any unit since Vietnam. If you want to know what its like to be infantry, in a war this is an excellent account. Well written and well narrated. A birds eye view of being an infantryman in the hottest spot in Afghanistan at that time. One of the best accounts I have ever read on this war from a foxhole point of view. As a retired Army Infantryman myself I can relate to this book well and tell you that he gives you a very good inside look at what its like, the hardships, the insanity, the comradeship and much more. Highly recommend.

Must read
Revisado: 12-31-18
As a retired Army Infantry NCO I found this book on point. There are to many senior officers (not all) that are mediocre or worse just plain incompetent. Careerists that just give a darn about their next rank and not the troops. Toxic commands atmospheres where leadership is replaced by fear. There is no accountability for bad leadership or decision making. Instead of firing these bad leaders they just keep them around. The problem with that besides the obvious is that good junior officers get out of the military. Without firing bad leaders the crème never gets a chance to raise to the top. As the book says good leaders are not rewarded and bad ones are not punished. Personally I steered as clear as I could of senior officers later in my career because I didn't respect them anymore, to many bad apples I had run across. Command is a privilege to be earned. Reward and promote good leaders, fire bad ones. Its not rocket science.

A Night in the Pech Valley is Grant McGarry's account of what it takes to become an Army Ranger and what life is like in the 75th Ranger Regiment. More importantly, it is about an operation in the most dangerous terrain for US forces anywhere in the world. The Pech Valley is surrounded by Taliban-filled mountains on the Pakistan border in the Kunar Province, where the mountain peaks push 10,000 feet.

Very excellent book. Gives an inside view of the ranger regiment, what they go through and some of their missions. Being retired from the Army it makes me happy that this nation is still producing great Americans and warriors willing to give it their all.
