Historia
Eilis Lacey is Irish, married to Tony Fiorello, a plumber and one of four Italian American brothers, all of whom live in neighboring houses on a cul-de-sac in Lindenhurst, Long Island, with their wives and children and Tony’s parents, a huge extended family. It is the spring of 1976 and Eilis is now forty with two teenage children. Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.

Stunning in every way
Revisado: 05-26-24
Incredible novel, stellar performance by Jessie Buckley. The shifting perspectives and shifting sympathies you feel are the thing I most admire. So masterfully handled by the author.

Historia
When Mona Ramsey married Lord Teddy Roughton to secure his visa—allowing him to remain in San Francisco to fulfill his wildest dreams—she never imagined she would, by age 48, be the sole owner of Easley House, Teddy’s grand, romantic country manor in the UK. She also didn't imagine that she’d need to open the manor’s doors to paying guests to afford the electric bill and repair the leaking roof. Yet somehow she and her young friend Wilfred--whom guests assume is serving as Easley’s charming-but-clumsy butler--and the loopy old gardener Mr. Hargis, are making it work.

British accents are atrocious
Revisado: 03-25-24
Mara Wilson’s British accents are so amateurish. I just couldn’t bear it and packed it in. I will have to finish it on Kindle. What a shame. How hard could it be to find an American actor who can do accents (or someone like Alan Cumming, a previous Maupin narrator) who can do American ones?

This is an extraordinary memoir
Revisado: 11-06-21
I was blown away with how beautifully written this was. I’d enjoyed (not quite the right word for such a harrowing story) Allison Moorer’s previous memoir, “Blood,” but I would actually say this is even better—a more nuanced work, as a whole, by a by now more seasoned writer. Her compassion, honesty, and vulnerability are in every sentence. A+ narration as well.

Historia
Di Canzio follows their story past the end of Maurice to the front lines of battle in World War I and beyond. Forster, who tried to write an epilogue about the future of his characters, was stymied by the radical change that the Great War brought to their world. With the hindsight of a century, di Canzio imagines a future for them and a past for Alec—a young villager possessed of remarkable passion and self-knowledge.

Extraordinary book in its own right
Revisado: 08-26-21
This a beautiful, gripping, at times rapturous novel in its own right, and an utterly convincing (in voice, language, period and geographical detail) sequel to Forster’s. In many ways, it’s even better. The narration is superb too.

Do not listen to the introduction!!!!!
Revisado: 12-05-19
Gore Vidal gives away the ending. Not hinting at it, literally saying what happens. Guess what book I won’t be reading now. I can’t believe they included that. So idiotic.
