Historia
The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy. When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species. Different from my expectations but excellent
Revisado: 12-19-24
This book was not at all what I was expecting as the follow up to The Expanse. I had expected more of the same patterns that had been set up in The Expanse. A conflict arises, the self righteous hero rises to do what they think is right, a strange but down to earth group of people band together to stop the threat and keep the hero in check, the big threat is stopped and everyone is happy. BUT WAIT! WHAT'S THIS? There are unexpected consequences to their actions. We'll have to read on to find out what happens next, and the cycle repeats itself.
Mercy of the God's feels that way at times, but then it throws a curve ball and you find your self thinking, what the French toast just happened?
The aliens *FEEL* alien. They are not just a different flavor of humans, but this time with nuts. They are not problematic human motivations masked as an alien ideology with tentacles to make it okay. Every race is presented in a different way, that makes them feel unique and interesting, even if they only get a short amount of overall representation. I want to know more about why each race does the things it does, why they were selected, what they will do in this situation, etc.
I highly recommend this book!

Excellent as always!
Revisado: 11-27-24
This is an excellent continuation of the Cain series. While being a bit hard to follow at times due to this book taking place prior to most of the series so far, I'd still recommend it to anyone who likes the Astra Militarum faction in 40K.
I also like the introduction of the Reclaimers chapter of spacemarines. They are absolutely lovely to learn about and I like how they are portrayed. Enough so that I will probably build a small force of them for use in tabletop games.

Excellent book!
Revisado: 03-21-24
This is an excellent book, with a nice twist on the classic fantasy adventure formula. I am giving it a 5 over all in all but the performance category. That is strictly due to a few audio artifacts that distort the sound of the narration. I don't know this for sure, but I strongly suspect that those artifacts come from copying this from an old CD or possibly a cassette tape. I plan to listen to this book again to see what I missed. I recommend this to any fantasy lover.

Wow! Just WOW!
Revisado: 03-17-24
That is definitely the way to end a series like this! The twists! The turns! The loose threads that were neatly tied up! AND the other threads that you realize were just red herrings! I was a little worried after the last book, but this one did everything it needed to, precisely as it needed to and exactly when it needed to. The timing and flow were great, Toby Longworth returned to finish of the series as well, so that's another huge plus! I also love that Abnett left enough room and material for a follow up book or two if so desired. This book neatly tied up the Anarch Sek story arc and I am pleased with how it did that!

A very good book!
Revisado: 03-13-24
This was a very good book! It is clearly all building up to the final book "Anarch", but I still think this book holds up well as a lead into the finalie. While I personally still feel that "Necropolis" is the best books in the series, this is definitely one of the better books.
While I gave the book a score of five in every category, this really feels like half of a book. It is intentionally written in such away as to leave a lot of loose threads open for the next book. That said, there are definitely a few of those loose threads that could have been tied up in this book, but I am not the writer, so who am I to judge? The most interesting thing to me is the each book has been written in a different style. Some of those styles are excellently executed, others are not. This one mostly sticks the landing. I liked it, and will probably listen to it again in the future.

It grew on me.
Revisado: 02-27-24
I did not immediately love this book, as I have done for previous books (Necropolis for example), but stick with me, O.K.? I did not love this book at the half-way point, but I was starting to like it. It wasn't until the last few hours of listening that I started to really love this book. It is a slow burn, and I mean SLOW. By the time I got to the end I would say I genuinely loved this one. Not like the aforementioned Necropolis book, but in its own unique way. until about the last two hours of the book I had resigned myself to skip the review option, and now...this!
I don't want to spoil this one, but Abnett really pulled this one off. Only In Death starts by letting you think this will be a 'monster house' sort of story, and it kind of is, but not really, but it absolutely is, and it really is not, but it definitely is, or is it? Yeah, I know, not remotely helpful and it's very confusing. And yet, I still LOVED this book! it's hard writing a review with out spoiling anything. by the mid point you're not sure what is going on, and by the end many of the problems are resolved. That said, the very end of the book just blows wide open a couple of loose ends and I know I will likely never get the closure to those questions that I so desperately seek. I love this book. Not at first, but it grew on me. This won't be loved by everyone, but it was exactly what I needed!

Unexpected but deliciously good!
Revisado: 02-13-24
This book was excellent as was to be expected, but had several unexpected turns that really had me enthralled! I though that Necropolis was my favorite, but this might just supplant it. They are definitely tied for my favorite at the very least.
This book introduced several new characters that I have a feeling are going to be major players in the next few books. I loved some of the turns in the plot, and how it subverted my expectations that have been built up over the last few books. I also love how it ends. I am excited to learn what happens in the next book!
Really quick, I also love the concept of the Wire Wolves! Holy cow was the encounter with them just amazing in my opinion!

Excellent as always, but bad format.
Revisado: 02-03-24
The book itself is excellent, and the performance was spectacular. The only complaint I have is that this book is broken down into four big 'chunks' that are hours long and hard to navigate. Technically each chunk is a chapter, but inside each 'chapter' is broken into several smaller parts. if you miss something or accidentally advance the progress slider, it is very difficult to find your place again. I feel like this is something that could have been fixed while they were making the audio book. They could have easily broken the narration into smaller parts for easier navigation. some of the 'chapters' are more than 2 hours long. It really bothered me each time I had to try finding my place again after being interrupted and not having a chance to pause the book.

A stunning performance and a great story!
Revisado: 01-26-24
Book 2 was an excellent, if a bit confusing at first, follow up to book 1. The first half jumps around in the time line a bit to spot light certain characters. then in the second half it ties everything together. I liked the way it was written and thoroughly enjoyed listening. I am off to book 3 now!
