Old favorite, well read?
Revisado: 09-01-21
I read this book many years ago and thought I would enjoy hearing it now.
The story is still an interesting take on both magic and coming of age stories.
The reader did have only a few problems with pronunciation of certain words. But the Bella Lugosi-esque voice which was used for the Endarkened was very unpleasant.

Historia
In her father’s household Althea Ervine was used to having the running of things - until her father disowned her (again) and Althea fled to her sister’s home in London. For the first time in her life Althea gave herself up to the gaiety of a purely social life, to the theatre and parties and the admiration of young men. The most ardent of these young men was Edward Pendarly, and Althea thought she could like him very much. But the infuriating, fascinating Sir Tracy Calendar hinted that Edward’s intentions were not all they should be. But why did Sir Tracy care, and for that matter, what were Sir Tracy’s intentions?

Story sweet, narration not
Revisado: 01-24-21
The story is sweet and clean, if somewhat typical. Basic boy-girl meet, break up, get back. The main characters are most interesting in that they are both smarter than their families, but still bound by custom.
The narration, however, leaves much to be desired. There were so many mangled and mispronounced words, especially in the second half, that I found myself clenching my teeth.
When something jars you that much, it throws you completely out of the story.

Historia
As a young duke, all Nathaniel wants is to be left alone. So when he meets Charlotte, an outspoken American heiress, he is suspicious of her indifference. Too many women have sought - and failed - to catch him. However, Charlotte is unimpressed by his title. She has no interest in English dukes. All she wants is to leave dreary England and travel to the sunny sands of Egypt to see the grand pyramids. Unfortunately, a debutante seeking to entrap Nathaniel gets murdered.

Enjoyable. Nice twist, tough American accent
Revisado: 11-03-20
The author has some nice twists to a genre that tends to be formulaic.
My only problem was the narrator, while otherwise excellent, had a tremendously difficult time with the main character’s southern American accent. Most of the time she sounds more northeast US, then when the text reminds one she is southern, there will be an attempt at a drawl, but only for a few words.
Otherwise I enjoyed this very much.

Good story, narration needs polish
Revisado: 04-24-20
The second in a series, this book tells a story that is almost as good as the first one. The narrator has an interesting, rather gravelly voice. She does a good job making characters distinct and easy to follow. There are, however a number of mispronunciations through out the book. Even allowing for differences in UK vs US pronunciation, there are many errors and I find it sadly annoying and it detracts from an otherwise good performance.

Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company. When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance - and perhaps even her father's death.

Marvelous
Revisado: 03-12-20
I’m speechless.
But since I have a word minimum:
Marvelous. Main character realistically flawed but seeking for good to reach her potential and help others.
Lots of ups and downs in romance, with a mystery as well.
Clean, in keeping with the setting of the times, and richly lyrical.

A symphony I didn't want to end
Revisado: 12-29-19
As with others in this series, an unexpected, unusual talent is used as a metaphor for life, love, and God. Without ever being preachg, churchy, or sappy, the human love story is also a divine love story. Real problems, historical settings, real struggles both inner and outer. And a realistically happy ending.

One more great in a great series.

Complex characters struggle with their own pasts, with good versus evil, with good versus best. Family dynamics of support and struggle I form decisions as they live through realistic, detailed plots.

Best in show
Revisado: 04-26-19
I have enjoyed the antics of Lady Georgie and her friends for many books now. In terms of plot, this is one of the best. A probable sequence of events without any gimmicks. No ghosts jumping out deus et machina to rescue her, she doesn't take quite as long to pick up obvious clues, and her relationship with Darcy more balanced. They still watch out for each other, but he admires and acknowledges her abilities as much as he worries for her. She admits to wanting his support and protection, but acts independently a good bit, without sounding defiant or petulant. Still some humorous moments, too.
