I came here from tiktok. I loved the struggle of the main character! I loved the struggles of the eunuch general! Yet, I found that having them both bouncing back and forth dragged the story a bit for me. I found myself frustrated several times because things cut off on an important scene of one of the characters only to go to a slow scene of the other.
I did love the balance between normal life and spirit life. I don't know much about Chinese spirituality, but it was very easy to follow in this book! Massive props for that! I also loved the culmination of the general's arc. That feeling of male vulnerability is so rare to see. Ma's growth was also wonderful along with all of the strong female characters in this book. I'd give this book 5 stars for all of the amazing boundaries crossed if it wasn't because of the back and forth I mentioned.

A series to last a life time

I first started reading these in 7th grade. I'm about to graduate with my first college degree and I'm still avidly reading these books. I've read season 2 and 3, now I'm looping around to read the original season and it's like falling in love all over again. These books are gritty and full of love and passion. I'd recommend them to anyone to be honest!

I thought this was a trilogy and I was bracing for it, but it's not! There are a lot of big important scenes in this book and I can't wait to hear how it all ends! Oof! Everything is so tense and that cliffhanger was an insult to my heart and emotions!

I have a strong hatred for drunks and cheaters, so listening to this book was infuriating because of how detailed it was. I loved it all the more because of it. The author keeps your guessing until the very end. Some things click as the stpry progresses and you find out everything as Rachel finds out. Omniciency is used sparingly here and it's perfect. I strongly recommend this book to psych thriller fans.

Bitter Sweet and Beautiful

This was a beautiful ending to a wonderful story. I adored it! This series helped me get through long art classes by allowing me to escape during monotonous still life paintings. Also perfect for long drives to keep your mind entertained with a fantastical world full of beautifully written characters.
I was uncertain starting this series at first, but I don't regret it at all. I recommend tissues for the ending.
