Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Unique, I recommend
Revisado: 11-18-24
I recommend this novel. The story is good, the cranky octopus is lovable, the nephew is annoying and I really rooted for the main character. It took a few chapters to get into but then I loved it and was invested. Kind of sad to see it end.
Narration is good.

Barbra Streisand is by any account a living legend, a woman who in a career spanning six decades has excelled in every area of entertainment. She is among the handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and has one of the greatest and most recognizable voices in the history of popular music. She has been nominated for a Grammy 46 times, and with Yentl she became the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major motion picture. In My Name Is Barbra, she tells her own story about her life and extraordinary career.

Love and Respect theTalent, But Hate Pontification
Revisado: 01-23-24
As a teen when Barbra came on the scene, I watched her on the Judy Garland Show and was glued to her first TV special "My Name is Barbra" in 1965. I purchased albums and watched her movies over the years, always admiring her talent. But as the years went by, the more she pontificated, the more I was disenchanted. Even when I agreed with her, which was often, I grew tired of her condescension and preaching. Her disrespect for anyone with opposing views seems to me to be a way to further the gap. She categorizes people by their political party rather than recognizing there are a wide range of beliefs, behaviors, occupations and economic stratification in each party. Many of us were in great pain with "that man" in office and wept on January 6--regardless of party. She tells a story that during one of her concerts she asked for a show of hands of who was Democrat and who was Republican. When there appeared to be more Republicans she remarked that that makes sense because Republicans have more money and can buy the tickets. It was disrespectful and offensive that she even asked people to declare their party at her concert, then was insulting with her snide and divisive comment. I will say, I highly respect her genuine desire to help others and that she puts her money where her mouth is to support charitable and research organizations. Kudos for that. One might ask why this reviewer is even referencing politics in this book review. It is because Ms Striesand spends quite a bit of time on the subject of politics and expresses her opinions in excruciating detail.
On other topics within, I enjoyed hearing her story and "the behind the scenes" of her career, especially the making of the movies. She is an amazing artist. Prince of Tides was a masterpiece! It was lovely to experience some of the wonderful movies and songs again. I rented several of her movies to watch again, now having the advantage of the inside stories. That was fun.
If you decide to undertake this very long biography, be prepared for many superfluous details--once even down to the buckles on her shoes. On the other hand, the details were enjoyable at times.
I will alway admire Ms Striesand's talent and creativity. So much, in fact, that I stuck to it and finished all 48+ hours!!

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Lovely, Poignant Family Drama
Revisado: 11-05-23
I rarely give five stars but a good family drama such as this is rare to find. It kept me engaged all the way through and the ending was perfect. Tom Hanks did a fantastic job and I am sure his narration (which was actually a performance), greatly enhanced the story. If you are looking for sex, murder, horror, etc., then move on. If you enjoy a finely woven family drama read by a beloved actor, this one is for you.

Amy McFadden fantastic performer
Revisado: 07-16-23
The story was engaging and I recommend it. This review is really more about Amy McFadden. I have listened to several books that she has narrated and think she is one of the very best. Her voice is pleasant with good tone and clarity. She expresses emotion without losing volume. So many female performers fluctuate volume, whispering at times and/or dropping volume at the end of sentences. It is very annoying to have to struggle to hear an audio book. MS McFadden, though, does not drop volume and is one of my favorite performers.

JoJo wins again!
Revisado: 06-26-23
I rarely give 5s as I think they should be reserved for the very finest literature. However, this story had me listening straight through. The characters were engaging and character development was great. The story was clever. The narration was excellent. MS Ridley was very good with various character voices and best of all, her voice retained a consistent volume. Though I am a fan of many things English, the narrators often whisper or their volume drops at the end of sentences. That results in listeners missing a lot, especially if listening while driving and unable to rewind. It is maddening. I will be seeking out works by MS Ridley as she maintains a fairly steady volume and has great inflection. MS Moyes is a very talented author. I highly recommend this book!

Family drama that kept me engaged. The narration for Clara good but male characters not so much. The worst was the mother, I actually wondered if it was robotic but then I heard a variation in tempo. I would recommend the book over the audio.

Keith Richards is talented and interesting!
Revisado: 08-17-22
I was a young teenager when the Rolling Stones and the Beatles came on the scene. Their music was part of my growing up and is integrated in my memories of life events. It was interesting to hear Richard's experience and views as to how they became part of the fabric with cultural and world events of that era. I enjoy listening to those who have found their passion--how they found it and what it meant in their lives, as well as their creative processes. Richards is straightforward, authentic, and surprisingly warm. I am now more of a fan than ever. The judgemental and easily offended should pick something else. Unless you have been living in a cave you already know Richards lived an unusual and unconventional life. Narration: Johnny Depp reads the first couple of chapters and returns in the latter part of the book. I could listen to Johnny read anything and of course he does very well here. Joe Hurley reads the bulk of the book and is very good. His voice and Brittish accent helped with "hearing" Richards. Keith Richards actually reads the very last section which was nice. I would like to have a pint and listen to more of his tales. Definitely worth a credit.
