Historia
When Pamela Churchill Harriman died in 1997, the obituaries that followed were predictably scathing–and many were downright sexist. Written off as a mere courtesan and social climber, her true legacy was overshadowed by a glamorous social life and her infamous erotic adventures. Much of what she did behind the scenes–on both sides of the Atlantic–remained invisible and secret. That is, until now: with a wealth of fresh research, interviews and newly discovered sources, Sonia Purnell unveils for the first time the full, spectacular story of how she left an indelible mark on the world today.

Los Angeleez? Ducheen?
Revisado: 03-27-25
Some of the annoying mispronunciations that I think anyone who narrates professionally should correct before reading. I really appreciated the information about Pamela that showed she was way more than a courtesan and social striver. Her appointment as US Ambassador to France demonstrated her understanding of foreign policy and her ability to work hard. Louise Brearley almost ruined the book for me. NO one says Los Angeleez!!

Historia
For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

What a bizarre story!
Revisado: 02-26-25
This was a fascinating read and, despite the quotes from many therapists about Breitweiser, it is still very difficult to understand this kind of obsession. The punishments seemed kind of lenient given the volume of his theft!

Remembering a parent from your childhood memories and then getting to know that person again through a search from years later was a very unique way to tell his Holocaust story. I actually found Wichtel's hunt to be exciting.

Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

While I thought this was a worthwhile to read, I wish I could say that I learned some new things about this topic. I have read lots on the topics he's covered. Certainly Israeli apartheid is not something new and definitely not since their reaction to the October 7 terrorist attack. I think this is an important topic but not a new one for me.

I was almost exhausted by the end but continued listening just to see how it turned out. I give the author credit for the clever way she puts stories and themes together but this one kind of wore me out. Interesting how the Aussie accent can make a 2 syllable word out "no" or "know."

Historia
As war swept across Europe in 1940, the idyllic life of Fey von Hassell seemed a world away from the conflict. The daughter of Ulrich von Hassell, Hitler's Ambassador to Italy, her marriage to Italian aristocrat Detalmo Pirzio-Biroli brought with it a castle and an estate in the north of Italy. Beautiful and privileged, Fey and her two young sons lead a tranquil life undisturbed by the trauma and privations of war. But with Fascism approaching its zenith, Fey's peaceful existence is threatened when Ulrich and Detalmo take the brave and difficult decision to resist the Nazis.

Exciting true story!
Revisado: 09-04-24
There's lots of historical information in this book but don't let that deter you from reading it if you aren't a history buff. It's also a spellbinding WWII tale of a family being at the mercy of the Gestapo and the SS. They serve as an example of total disruption of families in Europe during the Nazi terror. I won't say more so as not to give away the ending except to say that they and many thousands more showed amazing courage.

Historia
For as long as historical records have existed, authoritarian regimes have tried to rewrite history to suit their purposes, using their dictatorial powers to create myths, spread propaganda, justify decisions, erase opponents, and even dispose of crimes. Today, as America’s Republican Party becomes increasingly radicalized, it’s not surprising to see the GOP read from a similarly despotic script. Indeed, the party is taking dangerous, aggressive steps to rewrite history—and not just from generations past.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

Nothing new here but very well researched!
Revisado: 07-18-24
Having watched the various judgements against the Sackler family, I wasn't surprised by any of this but it was interesting to see how 3 generations of the family were corrupted by greed. The fact that they stuck to their story about how the drug wasn't addictive even through all the court battles and never took any responsibility is just mind-bending. I wonder how it feels to know that one's actions have been responsible for thousands of deaths. But hey, they were able to sell their various mansions for millions so I guess they took comfort in that! I would have given the story 5 stars if the truth of the family wasn't SO disgusting!

Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

There are few more important books for voters to read to understand the bizarre support of Trump by evangelical Christians. Everything he is goes against Christian values as so many of us understand them. Yet they continue their support. This is also a crucial book to read in an election year.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Another Erik Larson winner!
Revisado: 05-24-24
I love Larson's books (have read them all) and this is no exception. He covers historical events in such a fascinating way. However, Will Patton's narration nearly ruined the book for me. How did he ever win an Audie award? He sounds like he's trying to be either George W. Bush or a "Lonesome Dove" cowboy. Does he think the subject requires a pretend Southern accent? He adds soto voce in the weirdest places; I guess he thinks it adds suspense or gravitas. Whatever the case, it's SO annoying. I know I should be talking more about the book but the fact that I can't shows how irritated I am with the narration.
