Meet the Stevens family as they prepare to embark on their yearly holiday to the coast of England. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens first made the trip to Bognor Regis on their honeymoon, and the tradition has continued ever since. A peaceful escape
Revisado: 09-15-21
I loved the slow, gentle flow of this book. It made me slow down and feel relaxed and happy. No need for a complicated plot or nonstop action. The premise of getting into the minds of each family member over a 2-week period was an interesting way to engage the reader and bring the characters to life.

Historia
In the late 17th century, two young Frenchmen, René Sel and Charles Duquet, arrive in New France. Bound to a feudal lord for three years in exchange for land, they become wood-cutters — barkskins. René suffers extraordinary hardship, oppressed by the forest he is charged with clearing. He is forced to marry a native woman and their descendants live trapped between two cultures. But Duquet runs away, becomes a fur trader, then sets up a timber business. Annie Proulx tells the stories of the descendants of Sel and Duquet over 300 years.

A long, long story
Revisado: 06-22-20
The first part was the best but even then I struggled to keep up with all the characters. then it got more complicated and shifted to other parts of the world and eventually to the present day. just too many twists and turns. I understand that the destruction of the world's great forests was the theme but to weave it all together in one story was too ambitious and confusing.

Great cast of characters and spellbinding story
Revisado: 06-14-18
Sometimes the truth is harder to believe than fiction. This story captivates with both.
