Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

It is difficult to read dystopian books in times like these. I think, however, this book is prophetic and hopeful. The garden will bloom. Gardens are lost and gardens are found.

This book was an engaging review of the unique story of Ben Taub hospital. The author gives a fairly unbiased case for the benefit of social safety net hospitals. As a former Texan … it brought back memories of Houston and of my medical training in Galveston, Tx

When Annalee Ahlberg goes missing, her children fear the worst. Annalee is a sleepwalker whose affliction manifests in ways both bizarre and devastating. Once, she merely destroyed the hydrangeas in front of her Vermont home. More terrifying was the night her older daughter, Lianna, pulled her back from the precipice of the Gale River Bridge.

Maybe better as a short story
Revisado: 02-03-24
This is a somewhat interesting mystery that could have been told as a short story. It seemed that the author stretched dialog and description just to fill the length of a novel.

Historia
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

Tragedy porn
Revisado: 08-22-21
I wanted to like this book. I love historical fiction and I love learning about non-western cultures in particular. As I read tragedy after tragedy and finally started the geisha story, I had to take a break. I read some other reviews to try to gather my thoughts. When i read the term “tragedy porn” I found the term I was seeking. This book exemplifies tragedy porn. I think novels that are geared toward women historically had a romantic tone. I never connected in romance novels that simplified the world into black and white. Tragedy porn seems to be the new women’s genre. The characters are put in evil situations and either grow or break. This is the story of a woman who sufferers repeated tragedy and (spoiler alert) breaks under evil. I just think there are better novels and better characters.

If Filter out the misogyny and homophobia,it has good ideas
Revisado: 06-21-21
This is a good description of the way attachment theory MAY create positive or negative impacts on a person’s relationships. The authors go so far as to say one’s personal attachment style may affect their relationship with God. I learned quite a bit and agree with the general principles. Like many books written by conservative authors, the book uses examples of homosexual encounters as a reference to “false self”. I think a healthier view of sexuality is that shame about sexual attraction can lead to limiting intimacy. As a physician, I worry that the homophobia in these examples causes much more harm than good. I hope this is rewritten some day to be more inclusive to all in our community.

In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

Historia
How do we love in a time of rage? How do we fix a broken world while not breaking ourselves? Valarie Kaur - renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer - describes revolutionary love as the call of our time, a radical, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others, to our opponents, and to ourselves. It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say: You are part of me I do not yet know. Starting from that place of wonder, the world begins to change.

The ratings are correct
Revisado: 11-22-20
I stumbled across a few quotes by Valerie Kaur on the internet and wanted to investigate more. She wrote a very engaging memoir. If you are feeling overwhelmed by racism, sexism and homophobia and don't know where to start, this is a great book that encouraged engagement and self-care. I learned so much about the discrimination felt by Muslim and Sikh communities. The book, however, does not leave you in a pit of despair. It gives some hope and insight into how to engage without burning out.

Raw, intimate, and timely, Bolz-Weber’s latest book offers a full-blown overhaul of our harmful and antiquated ideas about sex, gender, and our bodies. This is a journey of holy resistance. Along the way, as antidotes to shame, heresy, and all-too-familiar injustice, Bolz-Weber shares stories, poetry, and scripture, cultivating resilient hope and audacious love rooted in good news that is “powerful enough, transgressive enough, and beautiful enough to heal not only the ones who have been hurt but also those who have done the hurting.”

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-07-19
I wanted to like this book. Nadia Bolz-Weber is one of my favorite writers. I have given her books as gifts. I think she is a gifted speaker and thinker. I think her premise is correct. We need to rethink the purity culture in the Evangelical church. We need to support sexual minorities. We need love each other when we do not meet historic biblical standards set forth by the mainline (patriarchal) church.
My concern, however, is that she has a very big logical fallacy in this book. She opens her book with the argument that holiness is defined as "togetherness". She argues that holiness is where separate beings come together. This just isn't a correct definition of holiness. Holy is defined as "set apart for God". Merriam Webster definition of holy - exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness". By definition. holiness is not carnal. She argues that erotic exploration is holy because it is communion.
I think she is using the wrong words. I agree that communion can be good. I agree that God wants communion, but I don't think she is using the word "holy" correctly. Since this is one of her foundational arguments, the rest of the first section seems to falter.
Because I love her writing, I continued to the second half of the book. The second half of the book is better. She describes the walk of sexual minorities and the paternalistic church. This is compelling. She ends with the admonition to work toward forgiveness and general communion. This is powerful.
I wanted to be able to share this book, but I can't. I think her misuse of the word "holy" is too big of a stumbling block. I am personally glad I listened to it, but I can not recommend for others.
