That’s an hour and a half I’ll never get back
Revisado: 02-03-25
So many little details that seemed like they’d be roped in for meaning at some point but this whole story really falls short.
What was this even about? I could have written better than this in 6th grade.

Good till the dogs started getting killed off
Revisado: 02-01-25
Was a good story with good flow. Details were believable and I spent many hours listening through books 1&2.
At the end of 2 and beginning of 3 the dogs started getting killed off in one way or another. I’ll never know how this wraps up because I just can’t stomach the dog killing over and over.
The title made me think that dogs were going to be the heroes of this story, not victims. Very disappointing to abandon so far into the trilogy but it’s too much.

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Only made it halfway through and just couldn’t listen anymore.
Revisado: 07-02-24
I feel like Michael Crichton is rolling over in his grave on this. Ugh. Just doesn’t “feel” like his work at all. I’ve been a fan since I discovered Andromeda Strain 50 years ago and had such high hopes for this long lost manuscript.
The “helicopter in the volcano” scene towards the beginning made think I was hearing a plot line for the 70’s show Emergency!. It just wasn’t necessary to the story. All the technical volcano stuff and quoting old eruptions was tedious, and I like science and details but this was just tedium that felt like filler to make a bigger book.
I am an avid listener and reader of books and enjoy hundreds of them every year. I don’t like Scott Brick’s narrative style but have been able to overlook it when the story is good, but not this time. The story just isn’t good enough to put up with the narration. It’s like listening to J. Peterman of the Seinfeld series. Nope. This is the last I’ll listen to Scott Brick and that’s unfortunate because he narrates a lot. It’s like every line he reads is the end of the world for a middle aged man…in any book.
So much hype for this book and it just isn’t that good, and the narration is worse.

This is so much more than another time travel story
Revisado: 04-19-24
I think so much about what I loved about this book was the narration. I’m not sure I could have embraced this very long story and given it the chance it deserved if it hadn’t been for the narrator.
This is a story of life, love and family but with a twist of time adventure. I only wish I could listen again and not know what was going to happen next.
When it started I thought it had echoes of 11/22/63 by Stephen King, but that was quickly snuffed out by a totally engaging story in its own right.
I’ve never heard of this author or heard anything read by this narrator but they both will be in my search for my next listen.

Couldn’t even finish it because of the narration
Revisado: 03-05-22
This narrator was a horrible sing-song reader with no regard for the punctuation. It was like listening to someone try to make a rhyme out of something that doesn’t rhyme. Every sentence, or broken sentence, ends on a high note of inflection. I can’t believe this narration made the final cut. It’s just awful.
I loved The Lake House and was hoping to find another gem from this author, but the narration for Sea of Memories just killed it for me. I couldn’t even get through the first chapter.
The sing-song narration for this book is just so horrible and impossible to pick a story out of it.

I didn’t know what I was starting but I never wanted it to end
Revisado: 11-12-20
I couldn’t immediately write my review of Blackwater: TCS as I needed time to grieve that it was over.
I have never read (listened to) anything quite like this. Since I was 4 I’ve been entertained by reading, even if it’s a phone book. I was soaking up Stephen King by the time I was 9. How many other 5th graders read The Stand when it came out? None of my friends would. “The book was too big” I’ve listened to plenty of science fiction and also the entire Outlander series. I love historical fiction. I have few boundaries on what I will or won’t read (or listen to).
This saga of the Caskey family is so relatable, except for the “condition” of Elinor.
The story spans more than 5 decades and you feel the history of a family and a nation unfold in the lives of the Caskeys and the town of Perdido. Beginning with the Easter flood of 1919, the discovery of Elinor in the Osceola Hotel and the small town that opened up arms to this stranger...and never asked questions.
This is a very long book with such great character development. As time passes and new characters are born, others pass away. Matt Godfrey puts to bed the dead characters and gives a voice to the new family members. It has been hard to say goodbye to my life in Perdido, and I feel just that, this was days of my life where I escaped to Perdido. I usually read novellas at bedtime but I found myself craving the voice of Matt Godfrey to read my story to me so I could go to sleep. It didn’t matter that I had to find my place each morning, I needed to go to sleep with his perfect voice and the Caskey family. He had a different voice for each character and they were always perfect. There was never a question in my mind who was speaking as he brought the characters to life. The writing of Michael McDowell gave me such clear pictures of Perdido and the Caskeys that once Matt added the voice they were living and breathing. I’m not sure I would have gotten the same jolt to my soul if I had just read this book and not listened to it read to me by Mr Godfrey. Well done, sir. I will always be your fan.
Matt Godfrey has the gift of storytelling.

Even free it was a waste of money
Revisado: 11-09-20
I listened to the entire story while doing housework so I figured I’d give it the full 2 hours to play out in case it developed into something more, but it was so predictable from the beginning.
**SPOILER ALERT!**
Basically kidnapped girls find way out and kill kidnapper. Nothing more. No suspense, no descriptions to build an image, predictable outcome.
