Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Glad I Continued Listening
Revisado: 02-16-25
This listen started out on a subject that seems to be a recurring theme in my other listens; just coincidence, I’m sure. Still, as I continued listening, I thought I would put it aside if it continued on that path, but it didn’t. An engaging story that draws you in with laughs and leaves you with some solid insight into intimate relationships.

The epitome of sincerity
Revisado: 08-10-24
Perhaps because I am personally interested in music, the making of music, the performance of music and all aspects of theater production as well, I found this book riveting in its detail. That so much can be said about one person and the person saying it in this audible version is the extremely talented Barbra Streisand herself is a testament to the depth and breadth of a life fully embraced inside and out. She embodies an ideal that more of us should aspire to. Don’t let the length of this read put you off; it is all relevant in some way.

Instantly engaging, strong characters, realistic plot—what more could a reader want? This would make a great movie too and I’d be the first to see it.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

Loved It!
Revisado: 02-26-24
This book is a gem. I knew nothing about David Grohl before I read it, but I had heard of the Foo Fighters. As a musician myself, I could totally relate to his explanation of where our minds go when we play music. But, more than that, he and his life stories have so much more to say about how loving support coupled with a dogged determination can manifest just about anything we want in life. Many thanks to Dave for sharing his life with us.

Historia
They are Hazel, James, Aubrey, and Colette. A classical pianist from London, a British would-be architect turned soldier, a Harlem-born ragtime genius in the US Army, and a Belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice and a devastating past. Their story, as told by goddess Aphrodite, who must spin the tale or face judgment on Mount Olympus, is filled with hope and heartbreak, prejudice and passion, and reveals that, though war is a formidable force, it's no match for the transcendent power of love.

Gods and Goddesses?
Revisado: 01-25-24
This story is delivered in a clever vehicle that renders it timeless: The moral attributes embodied by the Gods and the one Goddess remind us that we humans are still and always will be in the process of becoming more than the sum of our parts. The story could stand by itself, however, and still be relevant. Loved the historical references at the end. Saved me time in looking them up myself. A story that needed to be told, I appreciate the author’s work in bringing this chapter in our shared history into the light of day.

Didn’t know it was a bodice-ripper before I purchased it
Revisado: 01-25-24
But as a reader who doesn’t purposely go for this genre, I must say it was interesting in that it offered some great insights into dog training. The female character dialog was very real and well-played by the performer; can’t say as much for the male. I found myself mimicking him as he said his name at the beginning of his chapters. And, because I don’t especially like soft porn, I found myself laughing at those parts, filling in the missing heaving and panting . . . If that’s your thing, well, I can’t honestly critique that one way or the other.

A beautifully written story of making sense of one’s past and passing the best parts on to those you love. I would have enjoyed it regardless of who performed it; but truly, Meryl Streep knocked it out of the ballpark.

A brilliant piece of fictional literature that unerringly speaks of current cultural norms in characters that feel very real. A ‘must read’ for readers who enjoy stories that both entertain and elucidate. Kudos to the author; I look forward to reading more of her work.

The best audio book I’ve ever listened to!
Revisado: 01-26-23
Seriously, it doesn’t get any better than this: an allegorical story written in the wickedly delicious wit of British humor with an outstanding vocal cast that brings it all to life. Think “radio theatre” without the added sound effects. So glad I heard it rather than read it (although I’ve still recommended the hard copy to a friend who has no digital devices).

Historia
In a time when our political and cultural views feel more polarized than ever, Tyson provides a much-needed antidote to so much of what divides us, while making a passionate case for the twin chariots of enlightenment—a cosmic perspective and the rationality of science. After thinking deeply about how science sees the world and about Earth as a planet, the human brain has the capacity to reset and recalibrates life’s priorities, shaping the actions we might take in response. No outlook on culture, society, or civilization remains untouched.

Excellent on all levels
Revisado: 01-02-23
Mr. Tyson’s insights into the astrophysical machinations of human existence are deeply engaging, both in content and performance. I personally could not find any concept he so articulately explained through astrophysical analogies that I disagreed with. The scientific facts presented in support of his assertions further grounded my understanding of what I had intuitively perceived of our human condition. A must read for anyone who has lain awake wondering what life is all about?
