Abyssal Archive features the most comprehensive fan analysis of the Dark Souls mythos ever undertaken. We set out to pay tribute to Miyazaki's legendary game by crafting something that embodies the same care and attention to detail that makes Dark Souls itself such a peerless work of art.

Non linear helper for a non linear story
Revisado: 01-16-25
This was excellent, but definitely a challenge overview of Dark Souls. I am a casual player of Dark Souls that loved the game but am not a replayer. This read is definitely inspiring me to reconsider that.

Historia
Neither cosmic philosopher Lars Soren, hotshot pilot Bianca Petrescu, nor the high priestess Jessica McHugh—Lady Death herself—can say quite where in the galaxy they are. But after an experiment gone horribly wrong, one thing is clear: Asphodel Station isn’t in orbit around Jupiter any longer. Worse, the monsters that live out here—ancient eldritch beings thought only to exist in stories and nightmares—have now been alerted to Earth’s existence.

Pulp is best
Revisado: 10-27-24
Great pulp sci-fi listen. The tropes are so trope-y, but all mushed together into an enjoyable mix. Some ideas were genuinely great: eg the theory of cosmic inspiration, the vision of religion, etc. If you like sci-fi and also like Cthulhu, this is an easy choice.

Historia
In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

Difficult because it has to be
Revisado: 08-12-24
This book gets a lot of flack for being a difficult read for its narration and style. But i think it has to be for the scope of identities, linguistic styles, and influences that make up its core: a core that the story explicitly engages with in its process of becoming itself.
Each character holds their own critical lens and stylistic tone that intentionally conflict when they come together. That’s New York. Place that against a stylistic borrowing from the Call of Cthulhu and it makes for a read that is as rewarding as it is challenging.
Absolutely loved it, and can’t wait for more.

Wrapping up so many stories
Revisado: 01-29-24
Two years and too many audible credits later, I’m finally free.
I accidentally got hooked on 40k (well, 30k) while looking for an easy scifi series and snagged the earliest Horus heresy books.
The travelers from Calth, the rise and fall of Johnny Space, and the saga of the one space Marine with critical thinking skills — Lokan.
Thank you to Dan and all the HH authors. I loved it.
Now please just do something about that menace Erabus.

Absolute blast. Cawl and Felix are exciting protagonists, and while the whole the side narrative with the scythes is a bit of a question mark, it makes for an expansive and suspenseful story!

Historia
Before the being called the Emperor revealed himself, before the rise of the aeldari, before the necrontyr traded their flesh for immortal metal, the world was born in violence. Even when they inhabited bodies of flesh, Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner were polar opposites. Trazyn, a collector of historical oddities, presides over a gallery full of the most dangerous artefacts - and people - of the galactic past. Orikan, a chronomancer without peer, draws zodiacs that predict and manipulate the future.

Best 40k book, easily
Revisado: 11-14-21
I accidentally fell down the 40k rabbit hole during lockdown, and have gone through all the recommended ones from Gaunt to Cain to Horus to Eisenhorn. Of the lot, this was the most entertaining and interesting — with the only frustration being seeking out other such one-off gems floating around in the black library.

Historia
Once luxury was available only to the rarefied and aristocratic world of old money and royalty. It offered a history of tradition, superior quality, and a pampered buying experience. Today, however, luxury is simply a product packaged and sold by multibillion-dollar global corporations focused on growth, visibility, brand awareness, advertising, and, above all, profits. Award-winning journalist Dana Thomas digs deep into the dark side of the luxury industry to uncover all the secrets that Prada, Gucci, and Burberry don’t want us to know.

Great books, terrible narration
Revisado: 06-09-21
The book is interesting and has a good mix of history and argumentation, but the narration is genuinely terrible. Kudos to Dana for narrating her own book, but there are random gaps in the narration that break up sentences in a jarring way that distracts from the content. Editors/producers should have picked this up.

Historia
Carl von Clausewitz was a Prussian general and military theorist. On War (also widely known by its German name Vom Kriege) is considered to be Clausewitz’s magnum opus, despite the fact it remained unfinished at the time of his death. Published posthumously between 1832 and 1835 by Clausewitz’s wife, On War delivers a deep insight into various concepts and schools of thought connected to war. Using a vast amount of historical examples, Clausewitz explores the political, philosophical, and ethical implications of war.

A classic sullied by poor performance and editing
Revisado: 12-03-19
Clausewitz is always great, but incredibly difficult to listen to as an audio book. The narrator’s efforts here are commendable (the translation is dense and challenging), but the experience is affected by poor editing and what seem like frequently repeated phrases or stuttering as the narrator returns to a phrase: it’s possible these are titles being read out, but it does not come off as such.
Anyway, useful refresher if you have read Clausewitz before, but first time consumers beware.

Excellent and high level survey of the issues. There is repetition of experience and even phrases as mentioned in other reviews, but a very worthwhile listen.

Historia
Almost 2.5 million Americans have served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001. C.J. Chivers has reported from both fronts from the beginning, walking side by side with combatants for more than a dozen years. He describes the experience of war today as it is endured by those most at risk - the camaraderie and profound sense of purpose, alongside courage, frustration, and moral confusion mixed with technical precision. In these remote places where the reason for their presence is sometimes not clear, these young men kill or are killed, facing palpable and often constant threat of ambush or hidden bombs....

Gut wrenching

Chivers previous book, The Gun, was an excellent and critical look at a horrific weapon and its outcomes. The Fighters is a brilliant continuation of that kind of critical and multi-perspective writing, with an impact that can’t be ignored.
