Historia
On a cold winter night in 1928, three deputies are sent to arrest a man they know little about. They don’t know he’s on the run from a string of dark acts that stretch for 15,000 miles or why he’s shown up in the middle of Idaho. They don’t know that a far-off court has charged him with lunacy. They just know they need to arrest him. This gripping chronicle—filled with more than a dozen murders—twists and turns like a dust devil on a hot July day.

Historical research brings this story to life.
Revisado: 08-29-24
Enjoyed Tony’s descriptions of the Lemhi Valley and its residents approximately 100 years ago and approximately 50 years before I moved there. Not much has changed though times were tougher then. Also enjoyed his descriptions of life in Tennessee hills and the moonshine business. I found the seemingly frequent use of mental institutions interesting. Characters are well developed and empathy easily generated for the timespan. The author has done his homework! Held my interest.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

We’re still behind…
Revisado: 11-07-22
The USA is still far lacking in equality for humanity, behind in both racial and sexual equality. Regressing it appears. This book is well written and documented. Wish I lived in Europe, I’m so ashamed.

Historia
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

Eyes open now
Revisado: 11-30-20
What an eye opener for someone like me who doesn’t trust politicians yet tries to follow and make sense of the news. Rachel does her research and presents it well. I’ve always suspected big money under-workings in government but this paints a remarkably clear picture. It’s appalling. Every voting American should read or listen to this!

Historia
You’ve heard of an Essex Girl or even a Chelsea Girl, but what about a Hounslow Girl? Definition of a Hounslow Girl: a young Muslim woman who wears hooped earrings with her headscarf and grapples with traditional values while hustling her way through urban London. The Diary of a Hounslow Girl is a bold and provocative one-person play, written and performed by Ambreen Razia. From the joys of traditional Pakistani weddings to fights on the night bus, this is a comic story of dreams, aspirations and coming of age, told through the eyes of a 16-year-old British Muslim girl.

Well done!
Revisado: 01-21-19
Loved hearing the author perform her story, so very real and touching. Easy to identify with her naivete, coming of age, trials and tribulations in love and family life while offering insight into muslim life I'd never know. We are the same and have followed very similar paths.

Historia
Power is changing. Private corner offices and management by decree are out, as is unquestioned trust in the government and media. These former pillars of traditional power have been replaced by networks of informed citizens who collectively wield more power over their personal lives, employers, and worlds than ever before. So how do you navigate this new landscape and come out on top? Adam Grant, Wharton organizational psychologist, went to the World Economic Forum in Davos, the epicenter of power, and sat down with thought leaders from around the world, to find out.

Was totally fascinated by every chapter. I only wish everyone in schools, government, public and private life would listen, absorb and practice all of these life-changing lessons. Great human psychology for today and the future. Extremely valuable!

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Unsettling, completely believable and too real
Revisado: 01-13-19
Quite a story! Considering I live in Idaho I find this completely plausible and perhaps more common than we know. An interesting look into the mindset of fundamentalist Mormon family life coupled with some frightening human psychological issues. Terrific character development, self-examination and insight. So glad she survived, congratulations Tara.

Historia
From the beet fields of North Dakota to the wilderness campgrounds of California to an Amazon warehouse in Texas, people who once might have kicked back to enjoy their sunset years are hard at work. Underwater on mortgages or finding that Social Security comes up short, they're hitting the road in astonishing numbers, forming a new community of nomads: RV and van-dwelling migrant laborers, or "workampers".

Life as a Nomad
Revisado: 06-11-18
Very informative, author lives the modern nomad life herself making lasting friendships along the way. Work camps, Rubber Tire Rendezvous, Quartzite, all are explored, tried and reported. Worth listening to if you’re considering or forced into a change of lifestyle as so many are today.
