Historia
War can settle disputes, topple tyrants, and bend the trajectory of civilization—sometimes to the breaking point. From Troy to Hiroshima, moments when war has ended in utter annihilation have reverberated through the centuries, signaling the end of political systems, cultures, and epochs. Though much has changed over the millennia, human nature remains the same. In The End of Everything, military historian Victor Davis Hanson narrates a series of sieges and sackings that span the age of antiquity to the conquest of the New World to show how societies descend into barbarism and obliteration.

Brilliant Historian
Revisado: 12-18-24
The author takes a sweeping survey from ancient civilizations to nearer historical relatives analyzing events that led up to confrontation and the reasons for their eventual obliteration. The application to our own age is inescapable and unnerving to say the least.

Historia
D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the 76 days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed the Allied landing, have become the defining episode of World War II in the west - the object of books, films, television series, and documentaries. Yet as familiar as it is, as James Holland makes clear in his definitive history, many parts of the OVERLORD campaign, as it was known, are still shrouded in myth and assumed knowledge.

So often the focus is on the D-Day invasion and establishing the beachhead. This authors account provides vivid detail weeks and moths after and through the successful operation. All while maintaining a captivating narrative.
The narrator did a great job and handled the litany of combatant voices especially well. I’m a big WWII buff but now have a much greater understanding of the complexity and challenge of this war.

Fascinating but
Revisado: 02-17-22
Having worked in newspaper publishing for over a decade, I had always been interested in this icon of the industry. His life was as interesting and bizarrely unconventional as you’d expect. The story was captivating but overtime the unconventionality became decedent and oppressively dark.
I listened enthralled to the end but was glad when it was over with little to celebrate.
On a production note; the narrator was appropriate but his cadence eventually led me to bump the speed to 1.2.

Reads like a spy thriller
Revisado: 10-07-21
If my expectations were for Joel to write a dry and boring piece of non fiction, I was definitely wrong. I was on the edge of my seat as Joel shared a very even handed but ultimately hopeful book about the state of the Middle East and it’s hopes for peace.
2 thumbs up!

Historia
In the summer of 1937, Amelia Earhart is the most famous woman in the world - a record-breaking pilot, a best-selling author, and a modern woman shattering the glass ceiling in the early days of aviation. And then she vanishes. In Tampa, Florida, 15-year-old Lizzie Friedlander spends her afternoons glued to her father’s radio, tapping into the enormity of a world she longs to travel. Lizzie can hardly believe her ears when she picks up a radio signal from a faraway source that sets her heart racing: “Amelia Earhart calling SOS!”

Helpful in understanding the liberal mind
Revisado: 05-27-16
I've been on a tour of presidential biographies enjoying them all and learning much. You won't learn about the policies of Wilson by this work other than they were liberal, progressive and assumed beneficial. But what most impressed me was how pivotal this period was in American history and the role Wilson played in turning the direction of the country. Love it or hate it, we reap the fruit of it still to this day.

Unexpectedly Brilliant
Revisado: 03-28-15
Having read or listened to much written about WWII, I had not great expectations from this seasoned TV news journalist and his venture into historical war biography. But I immediately found myself transfixed, relishing the steady cadence and carefully chosen elements of the much larger story of the war to keep the book moving engagingly toward its focused end.
Though I at first questioned O'Reilly's decision of self narration, it soon became clear he was perfect for the reading in spite of some verbal stumbles the producers chose not to re-record.
Sit back and enjoy the ride. You won't regret a moment of this fascinating book.
