Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Saved my life
Revisado: 02-25-25
I've read this 3 times in as many years. Decided I'm going to read it every year for my birthday, as a gift to myself from myself!! I hope it becomes a movie so that Nora's story can reach an even bigger audience Her (root) story could be any of ours. It was mine until I read this book. Saved my life, changed my life. Thank you, Matt Haag!!! Thank you so much. Like Nora's "books" had a ripple/butterfly effect on others, your book had a profound one on me. I'm so grateful.

Fantastic narration. Nicely paced story.
Revisado: 09-22-24
Due to my own trauma, I had to skip the odd chapters that dealt with the protagonist's time at the barn, but listened fully to every "then" chapter after that. I don't think it took anything away from the storyline for me, so anyone who has been a victim of abuse or violence and who could be triggered, please note that skipping those is a valid option!
I enjoyed that there were some nice twists and turns interspersed with some cozy predictability as well. It really held my attention throughout, and the narration was top notch. Just wanted the characters to be fully fleshed out and a bit more dynamic.
Still, it was a memorable story; I'd be happy to read more from this author.

Too many chapters, very unbelievable dialogue
Revisado: 08-27-24
I got to chapter 100 of 200+ and just could not keep reading. I really didn't care about the characters even by then. The dialogue was extremely unrealistic, especially with kids, which was distracting and took me out ofnthe story time and again. It also got bogged down in too much exposition for me. Which felt tedious and boring. Sorry!

Poignant, honest, funny, thought-provoking
Revisado: 01-10-24
It was always going to be a touching story about his life and his addiction struggles. But, listening now in 2024, with the vantage point of knowing that Mr. Perry is no longer with us, I found his audiobook really poignant, raw, inspiring, and, surely to his delight(!), quite funny at times. I laughed out loud so much because of his entertaining way of writing and speaking, even when it was about deep, dark topics. I hope he found peace in those last days; he battled so many demons. Great book. Great loss.

Historia
In Plays Well With Others, Eric Barker dives into these questions, drawing on science to reveal the truth beyond the conventional wisdom about human relationships. Combining his compelling storytelling and humor, Barker explains what hostage negotiation techniques and marital arguments have in common, how an expert con-man lied his way into a twenty-year professional soccer career, and why those holding views diametrically opposed to our own actually have the potential to become our closest, most trusted friends.

Lots of nice twists and turns
Revisado: 04-02-23
Got a little slow about halfway in, but I'm glad I stuck around for the ending twists and turns that seem to be Lucy Foley's calling card. There was a ton of character inner monologue/thinking to themselves that occurred during dialogue with other characters — so for an audiobook, it was a little difficult to discern whether these words were being said aloud to the other characters or being thought. I'm guessing a lot of that would've been in italics in a print version to make it clear. That's probably more of a comment on the reading rather than the writing.

Narrated with southern accent, mispronunciations
Revisado: 03-16-23
The first thing I noticed was that the narration was super distracting due to the reader's (southern?) accent. Several common words were also mispronounced, adding to the distraction. One example: pestle as in "pestle and mortar," which is mentioned multiple times as it's a story about witchcraft and grinding herbs for spells. But there were several others.
Perhaps more importantly, though. was the bad grammar! It's fine when it's not perfect in dialogue, because characters say things all sorts of ways; but in the omniscient view, grammar needs to be perfect or close to it. Bad writing, or bad editing?! I guess both.
Both issues above brought my attention to a screeching halt multiple times during what was an otherwise seemingly decent storyline. I like a mystery, so trying to figure out who the truly good/bad characters were was what kept me listening to the end - despite the distractions.
The characters remained static and two-dimensional, however, and that was disappointing. I'd hoped for some growth.
Probably wouldn't recommend, and won't waste credits on the next titles in the series, especially if I see they're read by the same narrator. Just not my cup of tea!
