Historia
Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller’s exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book indelibly alters our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world’s richest man by creating America’s most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.

I knew little, I enjoyed the journey
Revisado: 03-13-24
Having known very little about John D. Rockefeller, I decided to read this book to learn a little more about both the man and the time. Most interesting. Lots of historical tidbits, an interesting journey of one man’s life. Definitely worth the time.

Historia
Geoff Shepard had a ringside seat to the unfolding Watergate debacle. As the youngest lawyer on Richard Nixon’s staff, he personally transcribed the Oval Office tape in which Nixon appeared to authorize getting the CIA to interfere with the ongoing FBI investigation, and even coined the phrase “the smoking gun.” Like many others, the idealistic Shepard was deeply disappointed in the president. But as time went on, the meticulous lawyer was nagged by the persistent sense that something wasn’t right with the case against Nixon.

Never trust the government
Revisado: 11-12-22
A fascinating review of Watergate, and the power-hungry Nixon haters that mounted a successful coup of the presidency. Perhaps now, 50 years after the fact, the truth will begin to be known.

Historia
Sidekick to SS Chief Heinrich Himmler and supervisor of Nazi rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, General Hans Kammler was responsible for the construction of Hitler's slave labor sites and concentration camps. He personally altered the design of Auschwitz to increase crowding, ensuring that epidemic diseases would complement the work of the gas chambers. Why has the world forgotten this monster? Kammler was declared dead after the war. But the aide who testified to Kammler's supposed "suicide" never produced the general's dog tags or any other proof of death.

Never trust the government
Revisado: 10-10-22
The book does a great job reminding me of one of my oldest philosophies: never trust the government. They build a convincing case that our government build its space program, and perhaps even the final days of the Manhattan project, using Nazi war criminals. Then there had an even bigger war covering up the story.
I could have done without the constant weaving of the author’s psyche into the story, but I learned to ignore it. I’m not sure why the main author felt the need to always let us know what he or his family was doing as he wrote the account that is so shocking. Did I really need to know his wife was making gluten-free bread? I think the book would have been improved without this “personal touch.”

When we think of electricity, we likely imagine the energy humming inside our home appliances or lighting up our electronic devices - or perhaps we envision the lightning-streaked clouds of a stormy sky. But electricity is more than an external source of power, heat, or illumination. Life at its essence is nothing if not electrical.

Historia
The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. But as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping new history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs. On the eve of World War II, Germany was a pharmaceutical powerhouse, and companies such as Merck and Bayer cooked up cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, to be consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to millions of German soldiers.

Fascinating material
Revisado: 05-22-22
This gives an interesting look at drugs in WWII, especially for Hitler personally. It causes one to think of the desperate measures that governments will go to get their people to obey and carry out their bidding. It's relevant history for all time. Our society has become convinced that if we don't take the next FDA approved and CDC recommended dose of XYZ, then we are sure to find an early spot in the grave. Why do we allow our babies to receive multiple injections of ??? within hours of birth? Why do we let the pharmaceutical companies be the tail that wags the dog? Why do we trust the government? Read this book, and beware.

Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Misreading Scripture With Woke Eyes
Revisado: 05-22-22
"Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes." It looks to me like the authors are "misreading scripture with woke eyes." It's mostly standard "evangelical garbage" as far as I'm concerned. Why would any author today say that Jesus lived in "Palestine?". It's politically charged anachronism (in a book about reading culture into the Scripture they inject in with a hugely politically charged needle). As academics, they are either painfully stupid or simply showing their true colors. My guess is they are not stupid. Chapter after chapter was a case study in how academia can take away the meaning of words in order to get the Scripture to support their woke worldview. The book has a few cute cultural anecdotes that are fun for sociology students, but fails in doing anything other than promoting the continued misreading of Scripture.

Historia
One of the most dynamic eras in American history, the 1920s began with a watershed year that would set the tone for the century to follow. The Roaring Twenties is the only decade in American history with a widely applied nickname, and our collective fascination with this era continues. But how did this surge of innovation and cultural milestones emerge out of the ashes of World War I?

Interesting, but an anti-capitalist propaganda piece
Revisado: 04-02-22
There is some interesting history in this book. But like so much academia today, it is mostly a thinly veiled rant against capitalism and Western Civilization. From this book, you would come to the conclusion that all 1920 capitalists were bad, and all moralists were evil. But Margaret Sanger, she’s just a gift from the non-existent gods, praise be to her name.

The fascinating biography of the man who laid the foundation for the CIA. One of the most celebrated and highly decorated heroes of World War I, a noted trial lawyer, presidential adviser and emissary, and chief of America’s Office of Strategic Services during World War II, William J. Donovan was a legendary figure. Donovan, originally published in 1982, penetrates the cloak of secrecy surrounding this remarkable man. The result is the definitive biography that Donovan himself had always expected Dunlop would write.

Lots of information.
Revisado: 03-25-22
This book is filled with subject matter of which I knew very little. I found lots of information that was very intriguing. Sometimes it seem to get lost in the weeds in a bit, with tremendous detail that made it difficult to follow. But it is hard to fault the author for being more detailed than my education on the subject matter could take. But, I listened to the entire thing, and found it insightful on many occasions.

New York state assemblyman, assistant secretary of the Navy, New York City police commissioner, governor of New York, vice president, and, at 42, the youngest president ever: in his own words, Theodore Roosevelt "rose like a rocket". He was also a cowboy, a soldier, a historian, an intrepid explorer, and an unsurpassed environmentalist - all in all, perhaps the most accomplished chief executive in our nation's history.

An Anti-Republican rant in the form of history.
Revisado: 01-22-22
The author’s clear political bias comes through within the first few minutes. Why would I want to listen to history by someone who doesn’t just want to deliver history, but wants to preach progressivism? It is a perfect illustration of why higher education is almost utterly worthless today.
