I didn't listen to the other stories in the series. I jumped right in with Alexei and Gabriella and I didn't have any trouble following the story at all, so I don't think it's necessary to listen to the other books.
The main characters are written in a way that made me really like them! I'd love to read more books about them and their adventures. That's how much I enjoyed spending 9hrs with them. They're both smart and it doesn't take them forever to figure out what's going on with the Russian Mob. The author also avoided having these two make the typical dumb mistakes that are overused in suspense or thriller novels when characters are being pursued. Thank you for that, Helena Newbury!
I disagree with the other reviews that mentioned the internal dialogue. I didn't have a problem with it at all and definitely didn't find it annoying. I also am thankful that the male narrator didn't attempt to use a Russian accent during the internal dialogue scenes.
The story moves along nicely and there is real chemistry between Alexei and Gabriella! The sex scenes are hot like someone call the Fire Dept. hot 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The only time I got annoyed was when Gabriella couldn't drive a car. I was so annoyed that I skipped part of that scene because it just didn't make any sense that this grown woman didn't know how to put a car in drive. There's internal dialogue along the lines of her saying "D must mean drive." Ugh! This was literally the ONLY thing that annoyed me about this book and it was later explained why she didn't know how to drive as part of her back story, then I felt like a jerk☹️
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I'm considering listening to the other books in the series, but Alexei and Gabriella have set a high bar!

Interesting listen, but beware!

I enjoyed this series. This is a dom/sub sexual relationship and even though I don't listen to those types of stories (not my thing at all), I was still able to enjoy the actual plot.
This story is all about the underdog, Keely, winning in the end. There were plot twists that I didn't see coming and I love when that happens. Plus, the twists made total sense and moved the story along.
There are several cringe-worthy phrases that are said over and over throughout the series:
Vaughn - "...so wet, so tight..."; "...impaled on my cock"; "...hilt deep..."; "baby." Baby is not said in a way that was sexy EVER! It always sounded creepy and unfortunately, it was overused by this character throughout the series.
Keely at one point while being whipped with a riding crop said to herself, "I can take this. I can make it through." Also, Vaughn asked her if the whipping was too much for her, she thought, "he knows my bodies limits better than I do." If you're a fan of dom/sub books then you may not find these scenes a complete turnoff. I LOVE erotica and I used the fast-forward button a lot during many of the sex scenes because of dialogue like that. So often, Keely doesn't seem to truly enjoy the spankings, beatings, whippings (whatever they're called) and she's simply enduring it. I couldn't listen to any of those scenes; it was too disturbing.
Also, I got tired of hearing Vaughn talk about his c*m being sprayed on...pick a part of the body, including the face and hair. My annoyance with that type of dialogue is simply because Vaughn truly comes off as a scum-bag, so when he says he enjoyed seeing "his c*m on her face", it sounds degrading. Not a sexy turn-on.
I agree with several of the other reviews.
1) He talks about his 9" cock A LOT!!!! We get it!
2) Vaughn is definitely one dimensional. He's only about 2% less of an a*hole by the end of the series, maybe 5%. He never got closer to becoming my "book f*ck buddy", much less my book boyfriend!
3) Keely's character develops but we don't get to see her progression from put-upon paralegal to self-assured CEO, but she does get there 👏
Btw, I loved the narrators and would listen to other books narrated by them with no hesitation.
I would have given this series 4-stars overall, but Vaughn is a flawed, unlikeable, unredeemable character that is the weak link throughout.

There's daring and adventure, women taking risks by stepping outside their comfort zones, whether it's by surrendering to a bodyguard in "The State" by Tahira Iqbal or confronting "The Wife" of a male lover in Kay Jaybee's story, only to be confronted right back.

The narrator sounds like a 13yr old. Plus, the accents used in the first story were unintelligible.
5mins of listening & I called it quits! Don't waste your time listening to this narration. I'm sure reading the book would be much better.
