Poorly mixed

Sound design is like a 12 year old decided to play with a toy gun and pepper it in through the story. Grating and unnecessary. Some of the voice effects are just bad. The performance is fine but the sound effects are only making it worse and are detrimental to the storytelling. Otherwise, it’s fine.

A worthy inclusion.
Revisado: 05-23-23
I do question the reason why we needed a magical book to get the story through Vai but still in Kyler’s perspective, but it works fine. The story seemed a bit too lofty and feel a bit flat at certain points but Brent Weeks has a way with character that lets him get away with it. Vance, as always is fantastic.

Revisado: 02-06-23
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The characters really pop off of the page, which I did expect from the author having read the Powder Mage books but the magic system in this book is fascinating. I really look forward to seeing where this goes.

Dante, Blays, and Gladdic's final effort to defeat him has failed. Within weeks—if not days—Rale will be destroyed. One last hope remains. They can't kill Nolost, but they may be able to eject him from Rale before he can complete his work. To do so, though, they'll have to destroy a world themselves: Olastar, the home of the portals that link all other places together.

It’s been a long ride. Perhaps too long.
Revisado: 12-29-22
I have been reading this series for years now. It’s had its ups and downs but the quality has generally remained consistent. The thing is, the story as it stands is just revolving world crisis after crisis. Spending three books on a villain to finally have the payoff of killing him to bringing him back to life to team up with the heroes? I don’t know man, I didn’t hate the book and I’ll almost certainly buy the next one. I just think it’s probably time for the cycle to conclude. There are only so many times you can re hash a character arc. By all means, I’d love to see more in this universe but perhaps a different perspective with a smaller scale could bring things back to earth a bit.

Excellent.
Revisado: 12-08-22
This is a great addition to the wider world of Rowe’s works. It is definitely more in line with the more serious side of storytelling but with a lot of fun tossed in. I will not spoil the ending here but a bit of a warning if you think that it will all be sunshine. There are some dark themes in here and it pays off well. The caliber of character writing is at an all time high and I look forward to more.

I don’t think this is going to be anyone’s favorite book but the characters are well written, the tragedies feel realistic. There are some gripes that one could point out, but nothing big enough to take you out of the story.

Historia
Cally and Rowe have scoured the demonic wights from Narashtovik. But during the war, Cally learned he can no longer be part of the pacifist Order that raised him to be a sorcerer. The pair has traveled south, seeking the true copy of The Cycle of Arawn - the artifact Cally believes can restore proper rule to Narashtovik. There's a few problems with this plan, though. For one, nobody's seen the true copy in decades. And another, in these lands, possessing a copy of the Cycle is rewarded with a quick trip to the hangman.
