I picked the audiobook because I was intrigued by the title and the highly respected editor and was hooked by the introduction's premise of sword and sorcery. According to wikipedia, "Sword and sorcery (S&S) or heroic fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy characterized by sword-wielding heroes engaged in exciting and violent adventures. Elements of romance, magic, and the supernatural are also often present. ... Sword and sorcery tales eschew overarching themes of "good vs evil" in favor of situational conflicts that often pit morally gray characters against one another to enrich themselves, or to defy tyranny." While certainly many of the stories fit at least loosely in this definition, I have a different ideal of S&S which is grittier than many of these stories. That said, it was a fantastic anthology of well-written, engrossing fantasy tales with stellar narration. Highly enjoyable and highly recommended if you're looking for a good, diverting listen.

An amazing collection of stories, some that had you on edge all throughout and some that saved the gut punch until the very last. Outstanding collection, performances and stories. Listen, enjoy...and be afraid.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Todd McLaren?

No! Not sure if the narrator or the production team have ever actually read R. E. Howard stories previously or Conan stories in particular, but the narration was awful. I'm a long-time fan of Howard's work and looked forward to this audio book, but the narrator's pronunciation of place names and 'Cimmerian' strongly put me off. But it was when the narrator tried to give Conan a half-baked Scottish or Irish (I couldn't tell what he was going for) accent that I couldn't listen to any more. Waste of time and money . If you love Howard's work and Conan do yourself a favor and avoid this audio book.
