Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything at all to do with us, despite the World Health Organization deeming it a 'global epidemic'. In No Visible Bruises, journalist Rachel Louise Snyder gives context for what we don't know we're seeing. She frames this urgent and immersive account of the scale of domestic violence in our country around key stories that explode the common myths....

Domestic violence from many perspectives
Revisado: 11-18-24
This is a well-paced, well-reasearched book on a difficult and deeply disturbing topic. I learned a lot including from the perspective of victims, perpetrators, and folks working "in the system". It's helpful to understand better just how hard it is for a victim to leave especially when kids are involved. It's also helpful to understand the roots of the violent behaviors. It is helpful especially for mothers of sons to consider how culture and coaches and political leaders and other role models may inadvertently be encouraging behaviors that are borderline coercive/abusive. Highly recommend.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases - a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with as well as way less experience in the dating department than the average 30-year-old. It doesn't help that she has Asperger's and that French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. She decides that she needs lots of practice - with a professional - which is why she hires escort Michael Phan.

Just not for me
Revisado: 07-15-22
This was recommended to me by someone who also doesn't typically read this genre. Nice to see neurodiverse characters, but for me, it was uncomfortably graphic and everything worked out a little too perfectly. Narration was solid.

Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Entertaining even for non-chess player
Revisado: 04-24-21
Listened because I saw a friend give it 5 stars on Goodreads, and this was free with my membership. Glad I did. A scintillating, moving story of a chess prodigy, Beth Harmon whose lyrical prose around the games makes it readily digestible and edge-of-your-seat enjoyable even without prior chess knowledge. Though, at times, the injustice of how Beth's being a woman meant her struggle was worse/much less supported than the male chess players' was infuriating.

Thought-provoking educational moving must-listen
Revisado: 02-25-21
I really appreciated the different perspectives about what end of life means and how it can be approached. It's easier not to think or talk about death, for sure. I thought I knew what my aging parents and I wanted, but after reading this, I realize it's not as "simple" as I have been making it out to be. It's rare and helpful to have insight into what others have gone through at end of life -- in a very digestible, clear and engaging format -- especially since we will all get there one day.

Starts a little slow but worth the wait!!
Revisado: 06-14-20
Historical fiction set during apartheid in South Africa at the time of the Soweto uprising (1976), told through two very different lenses from two excellent narrators. After a bit of a slow start, the story developed to be quite absorbing, as well as disturbing. Makes me want to read more about the history.

It is the story of 11-year-old Pecola Breedlove--a black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others--who prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning and the tragedy of its fulfillment.

Awesome & Gruesome
Revisado: 02-09-20
Wow. A lot of awesomeness (the writing, the narrative structure, the development of the voice/situation of many characters put in a larger context) and gruesomeness (self-destruction, despicable behavior, despair, injustice) for one book -- pretty amazing that it's a debut novel.
Wonderful narration by the author.

Historia
When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.
