Historia
From two former military officers and award-winning authors comes a chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034 - and the path from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.

Disappointing result from excellent premise
Revisado: 03-04-24
I bought this hoping that the admiral's experience would mean that the technical details would be excellent. They were, I think, but the rest of the story is not believable. For example, the Chinese attack an American battle group and come away without a single loss. Other parts of the book had good ideas, like the way an attack on some small islands was impacted by unexpected events

Historia
A jubilant Moscow is celebrating the Soviet Union's victory over Hitler when gunshots ring out though the city's crowded streets. In the shadow of the Kremlin, a teenage boy and girl are found dead. But this is no ordinary tragedy, because these are no ordinary teenagers. As the children of high-ranking Soviet officials, they inhabit a rarefied world that revolves around the exclusive Josef Stalin Commune School 801. The school, which Stalin's own children attended, is an enclave of privilege - but, as the deaths reveal, one that hides a wealth of secrets.

Historia
At Slough House - MI5’s London depository for demoted spies - Brexit has taken a toll. The “slow horses” have been pushed further into the cold, Slough House has been erased from official records, and its members are dying in unusual circumstances, at an unusual clip. No wonder Jackson Lamb’s crew is feeling paranoid. But are they actually targets? With a new populist movement taking hold of London’s streets and the old order ensuring that everything’s for sale to the highest bidder, the world’s a dangerous place for those deemed surplus.

Great story with an unsatisfactory ending
Revisado: 12-16-21
Great cast of characters including Jackson lamb who is deliciously un-PC. My beef with this book is that it ends in a very untidy way. It looks like the author had a deadline and just decided to stop

Rah rah rah
Revisado: 07-11-21
This story was written as red meat for the Fox News crowd not as history. The author does lots of Monday morning quarter backing. He attacks LBJ, loves Nixon, the French are stupid and duplicitous, he veers of course to claim Obama had association w terrorists, and so on. His lament that morality was considered e.g. when the US decided against destroying dikes that would have flooded huge areas and drowned thousands is another example of not trying to understand why leaders did what they did.
This being said, the flight sequences are well written. A better book is Flight of the Intruder.

Historia
World War II began with a metallic roar as the German Blitzkrieg raced across Europe, spearheaded by the most dreaded weapon of the 20th century: the Panzer. No German tank better represents that thundering power than the infamous Tiger, and Otto Carius was one of the most successful commanders to ever take a Tiger into battle, destroying well over 150 enemy tanks during his incredible career.

Good account of development of armoured warfare
Revisado: 10-11-18
The introduction is jarring - sounds like an alt-right manifesto. But the story itself is interesting. Amazing how these soldiers kept getting into their tanks even when they knew all was lost and they were greatly outnumbered..

Historia
The Roman Republic is one of the most breathtaking civilizations in world history. Between roughly 500 BCE to the turn of the millennium, a modest city-state developed an innovative system of government and expanded into far-flung territories across Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. This powerful civilization inspired America's founding fathers, gifted us a blueprint for amazing engineering innovations, left a vital trove of myths, and has inspired the human imagination for 2,000 years.

Respect for political norms
Revisado: 05-25-18
Terrific story with relevance for today. Conservatives prevented necessary reforms to preserve own wealth. When respect for political norms eroded through the action of populists the nation was torn apart.

Historia
In 1177 B.C., marauding groups known only as the "Sea Peoples" invaded Egypt. The pharaoh’s army and navy managed to defeat them, but the victory so weakened Egypt that it soon slid into decline, as did most of the surrounding civilizations. After centuries of brilliance, the civilized world of the Bronze Age came to an abrupt and cataclysmic end. Kingdoms fell like dominoes over the course of just a few decades. No more Minoans or Mycenaeans. No more Trojans, Hittites, or Babylonians.

Historia
