Like others, I preferred the first half of this book to the second. While I did not find it repetitive, I did find it slow and lackluster. I found the “love story” unnecessary and so understated it wasn’t worth including. I noticed “farting” came up a lot, which was plain strange. I was raised on Stephen King (the old stuff) and felt like this was from an entirely different author. I’m not sure how I managed to finish this one, but I will say that I’ve definitely read worse. The narrator’s voice was appealing and I blame the characterizations for the weird voices he put on. I don’t think I’d recommend this book to a friend. I liked the idea behind it, just not the execution.

I really enjoyed this book! It was certainly a unique concept. I really like Liane Moriarty’s work, but after Nine Perfect Strangers, I needed a break. This was definitely a better book; and finished it in only three days as I couldn’t stop listening! I prefer this narrator, as well. Overall, a recommended read!

Interesting Story, Great Narration

Overall, I found this story quite interesting. It included rich details and great insight into the 1950's Indian culture. Alka Joshi's use of clear and vibrant language helped bring the story to life, in a world full of beautiful colors and movement. Unfamiliar words and cultural aspects were explained to readers without detracting from the story. I was engaged in this book from start to finish.

The most enjoyable aspect of this audiobook was the narration. Sneha Mathan has an extremely enjoyable voice to listen to, and she excelled at bringing the characters to life. Overall, performance was beautiful!

The reason for my four star rating is two fold. First there were some minor inconsistencies in the story and the timeline seemed a bit irregular. Second, and most important, the protagonist always had an easy resolution to every problem she faced. Yes, there were moments of adversity, but a solution was always found with very little effort and fairly quickly. It made the story somewhat unrealistic and caused my perception to fall just shy of "Must Read.""

Not GRE level words

Easy and medium were not remotely GRE-level - "hard"could possibly qualify as easy for the GRE. The narrators were clear, but the examples and supporting antonyms and synonyms rarely seemed to improve word meaning and understanding. Ultimately wasted time that could have been spent studying actual GRE words.
