I managed to get through about 3/4 ...
Revisado: 04-17-25
The reason I stuck with this book as long as I did was because the performances were great, and the story had sprinklings of potential scattered throughout, the bits that weren't predictable or avoidable. But between the bits that were almost entirely forseeable and an MC that is very hard to empathise with sometimes, let alone root for, the story just just a downward 'battle spire' of ineptitude. I couldn't finish.

A Downward Spiral the whole way...
Revisado: 02-06-25
In short, intriguing concept for an MC, but I'm disappointed and won't be getting the sequels. Some spoiler-ish thoughts below.
Not the worst story in the world at all! But....
50% of this book is dedicated to agonizingly describing the pain and suffering of victims and protagonists.
20% of this book is spent in the comic-book-esque action scenes of a superhero movie.
20% of this book spent introspective monologuing by the MC.
10% of this book is spent describing the (usually) brief and rapid demise of antagonists.
50% - 10% = 40% of unsatisfying lack of justification. Sure we can claim that this book is designed to show how unfair the world is, but in what is effectively a superhero story, that just doesn't inspire much keenness to delve deeper. The last hour or so just felt monotonous and lazy, with little catharsis.

Vague Spoilers Below!
So much of this book mundane preparation and arbitrary soulhome details that barely get mentioned again, and minimal actual story, character development, character interactions etc. Most of that changes in the second half for obvious reasons, but only to some extent. I've bought the 5th book and will listen now, but will likely be my last in the series if there isn't more meat on the bones of this story.

Historia
Half a millennium ago, in a desperate attempt to defeat the Ithonian Empire, Kanderon Crux and her allies banished the city of Imperial Ithos from Anastis. Her dread weapon, the Exile Splinter, even erased the memory of its location from the universe. Now it's returning and bringing the Exile Splinter back with it. The great powers of the continent are desperately hunting for the lost city, knowledge lost even to Kanderon herself. None know what ancient Ithonian weapons and enchantments might still be found in the ruins, but the Exile Splinter alone would be a prize to justify war.

A rather wonderful inclusion in the tale
Revisado: 09-19-24
Keeping things brief, I found this to be a rare thing in book series of this nature, and that is a (likely temporary) stopping point. A great many tales continue to force build up over buildup, without accompanying lore or character growth. This book does not do that, it is not a forced lengthening of the story. I will take a break from this series having had many of the open-ends tied up, and will pretty much only be returning because the continued story isn't thrust upon the reader/listerner. Many other series i've given up due to the endless same old and minimal resolution, this book did that in a rather satisfying way, in a sense.
Finally, I want to simply say that the story at the end, AND particularly the theme of the message from the author at the very end were refreshing and, for me, a positive end to the listen. For those not into it, can just totally skip, you still get a heck of content for your credit/buck but yeah, generally positive vibes all around.

A Gentle Downward Slope Throughout
Revisado: 08-25-24
Alternative title: "From 'Fine' to 'Meh'.
Starts with the same potential that many similar books start with, better than average hook i'd say.
Follows into the fairly conventional, still better than average, the overall sense of wonder and potential is rapidly moved past into a typical and linear story.
Half way through, barely holding my attention, i'm trying, plenty of unrealistic choices and events.
**Semi-Spoiler**
3/4 of the way through, a mildly jarring and unwarrented encounter and story direction and a character that just casually slapping the slightly spineless MC for ... vaguely gestured bigger things unfolding. Kinda just goes downhill from there.
Summary:
Did not finish, not worth the credit wasted.

All the world's a stage...even when you're teleported to a new world. Struggling actress Cara O'Sullivan was walking down the street of Galway one moment, and the next, she was in an ancient tomb in a faraway world. Alone in the dark with her cell phone as her last tenuous connection to home, Cara sings her favorite song. To her astonishment, her song casts a spell of light into the world...and from the depths, something hears her. Challenged by a ghostly knight, a tragic necromancer, and hordes of undead, can a young woman who does not believe in heroes become one herself?

Exceptional performance, unlikeable MC
Revisado: 07-04-24
Im over 4 hours in at this point, an have had to take multiple breaks to brave hitting the 'resume' button. The MC goes from brave, relatable and understandably vulnerable, to an entitled child without the actual pragmatism of achieving adulthood. I fear I just dont have it in me to persevere. All ill say is that i found the other lower star reviews fat more accurate, though perhaps its because we share the same distate in the MC. The value of exceptional vocal and musical performance is undone by the writing around the character, where instead of development, we see regression.

Couldn't finish
Revisado: 06-23-24
I got about 60% of the way through, if not more. The growing discrepency between the MC casually accepting her role and responsibilities, and then growing increasingly in despair at the implications of her actions and that same responsibility. It just leaves for an inconsistent and over-saturated character.

Revisado: 05-08-24
Im 6 hours in an i have to voice an increasingly irritating thing! The MC is written as comic and confident, and then flips to full on deer in the headlights 'His world came to a halt'. Regularly. No realism in this personality! Are you carefree or careful or what??

Filler content, but i'm sticking through
Revisado: 03-06-24
Of all the books so far, this is the one that seemed the most in place to drive a couple of major events that don't resolve any of the major plotpoints from earlier books (though they do build and elaborate on them signficantly). Unlike the previous books, there isn't any major self-contained story in this, and the main character still has a frustrating tendency to go into overwhelming situations with minimal contigency and increasinly predictable problems crop up.
I am hopeful (neigh, I pray to Odin) that the next book will be richer.
Ciaran Saward has by far been the best thing about this series so far and I will be looking to find more of their narration in the future.
