Historia
In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items, and, soon after, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. Historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women’s faint presence in archival records, and, where archives fall short, she turns to objects, art, and the environment to write a singular history of slavery.

Required "review"

Since Audible does not permit ratings without a review of at least 15 words, I am providing this pro forma statement. I have listened to the entire audio book on the Audible app on my phone, but I prefer to keep my detailed opinions to myself.

If you buy a book at the bookstore, you own it. You can take it home, scribble in the margins, put it on the shelf, lend it to a friend, or sell it at a garage sale. But is the same thing true for the eBooks or other digital goods you buy? Retailers and copyright holders argue that you don't own those purchases, you merely license them. That means your eBook vendor can delete the book from your device without warning or explanation - as Amazon deleted Orwell's 1984 from the Kindles of surprised readers.

I just want to rate the book. Not interested in leaving a review, but one is required, hence this text.

Historia
From one of America's most talented historians and winner of a LA Times Book Prize comes a brilliant new account of Richard Nixon that reveals the riveting backstory to the red state/blue state resentments that divide our nation today. Told with urgency and sharp political insight, Nixonland recaptures America's turbulent 1960s and early 1970s and reveals how Richard Nixon rose from the political grave to seize and hold the presidency.

Good history, reader mangled nMes
Revisado: 11-03-22
Good history. but the reader butchered a lot of names. which was annoying to someone who lived the story when it was "news."

Historia
If you were asked when America became polarized, your answer would likely depend on your age: You might say during Barack Obama’s presidency, or with the post-9/11 war on terror, or the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s, or the “Reagan Revolution” and the the rise of the New Right. How did the US become so divided? Fault Lines offers a richly told, wide-angle history view toward an answer.

Thorough, conventional summary of recent history
Revisado: 08-29-20
A good high-level summary of the events of recent years which should startle no one who listens to mainstream news outlets. No deep analysis or original insights, but good portrayal of events that signaled deeper divisions, but whose future ramifications could not be known until much later. Generally good narration is marred by mispronunciation of several names: feminist Betty Friedan, Supreme Court Justice David Souter, and Congressman David Obey.

Historia
From George Washington's reluctant oath-taking through George W. Bush's leadership challenges after September 11, 2001, we view ambitious and fallible men through the new lens of the 21st century. Where did they succeed? Where did they fail? And what do we know now that we could not have known at the time?

Good top-level summary of presidents
Revisado: 05-20-18
I especially appreciated that the authors tried to present positives about each president, particularly the lesser-known or less well regarded ones and mentioned negatives about generally well regarded ones. It was most helpful with regard to little known presidents. The necessarily superficial coverage was annoying for recent presidents, whose administrations I remember well.

Good basic information, annoying reader
Revisado: 05-09-18
The information presented is useful, if a bit basic. Unfortunately the reader has a smart-alecky style I found annoying.
