Extended bar story
Revisado: 04-21-25
Johnson is best with dialog and back and forth between endearing characters. This book, however, is meant to be an adventure / thriller. It is not exciting / not his best. Great narrator though.

Historia
A gifted young knight named Collum arrives at Camelot to compete for a place at the Round Table, only to find that he’s too late. King Arthur died two weeks ago at the Battle of Camlann, and only a handful of the knights of the Round Table are left. The survivors aren’t the heroes of legend like Lancelot or Gawain. They’re the oddballs of the Round Table, like Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur’s fool, who was knighted as a joke. They’re joined by Nimue, who was Merlin’s apprentice until she turned on him and buried him under a hill.

Breezy and modern retelling of some round table legends. I had vague pop culture awareness of some stories but never read or knew the whole shebang. Well written and sometimes sassy -- enjoyable entertainment. Excellent reader

Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Historia
Al Ward lives on an isolated mining claim in the high desert of central Nevada fifty miles from the nearest town. A grizzled man in his sixties, he survives on canned soup, instant coffee, and memories of his ex-wife, friends and family he’s lost, and his life as a touring musician. Hampered by insomnia, bouts of anxiety, and a chronic lethargy that keeps him from moving back to town, Al finds himself teetering on the edge of madness and running out of reasons to go on—until a horse arrives on his doorstep: nameless, blind, and utterly helpless.

Willy Vlautin is a treasure
Revisado: 02-19-25
Man can he write. Not the most compelling plot, but the characters and settings are alive with heart and grit. Maybe the greatest collection of country music song titles ever compiled in one place. A really different feel and place than most books being written today.

Historia
Outside of a childhood nickname she can’t shake, Piglet’s rather pleased with how her life’s turned out. An up-and-coming cookbook editor at a London publishing house, she’s got lovely, loyal friends and a handsome fiancé, Kit, whose rarefied family she actually, most of the time, likes, despite their upper-class eccentricities. One of the many, many things Kit loves about Piglet is the delicious, unfathomably elaborate meals she’s always cooking.

What an odd book (and I mean that in a good way.) A girl who aims to please in both the kitchen and life bears a grim parade of humiliation until finally she must decide whether to turn the long comfortable braise into a stark roast. Nobody in this story is particularly nice, funny, or even friendable, but train wrecks are hard to turn away from, aren't they? Excellent narrator.

Historia
Heartfelt, powerfully engaging, and in the tradition of Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, this is a work of storytelling bravado: a thrilling action-packed art heist, an imaginative chronicle of forgotten history, and a poignant coming-of-age epic where a child navigates one of the most morally complex fronts of World War II and lives to tell the tale.

Slow dull (un)thriller
Revisado: 12-21-24
Great premise -- odd couple unite at an Italian monastery to hide priceless art from the Nazis during WW2 -- but poorly executed. Way too much explanation and description makes this a plodding, tedious story with cardboard unlikable characters.

Historia
Like Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place, Sidik Fofana’s electrifying collection of eight interconnected stories showcases the strengths, struggles, and hopes of one residential community in a powerful storytelling experience. Each short story follows a tenant in the Banneker Homes, a low-income high rise in Harlem where gentrification weighs on everyone’s mind. We root for these characters and more as they weave in and out of each other’s lives, endeavoring to escape from their pasts and blaze new paths forward for themselves and the people they love.

Starts slow, gets better
Revisado: 12-04-24
3.5 stars. This collection of stories feels more like journalism than a book -- profiles and day in the life of people living in poverty in a NYC apartment complex. Some stories are better (classroom) than others (lots of talk about hair ala Americanah). Not a lot happens but it's an OK slice of life. Deacon King Kong took on a similar setting but in a much more compelling way with actual plot / story and more memorable characters.

Historia
Everyone believes Adam to be something he’s not. Sometimes that’s because he’s told them a story. Sometimes he’s told himself one. But when Adam joins an Alaskan fishing crew that’s promising quick money, the dangerous work and harsh lifestyle strip away all fabrications and force a dark-hearted exploration of who he really is. On the unforgiving Bering Sea, Adam finds the adventure and authenticity of a fisherman’s life revelatory. The labor required to seize bounty from the ocean invigorates him, and the often crude comradery accompanies a welcome, hard-earned wisdom.

Insight outweighs the insipid
Revisado: 10-14-24
Yes this book has some lame doses of Harlequin and Hallmark, but it's also a really readable trip into a rural Chinese corner of the earth with believable and interesting characters. Who knew the business of tea could be so rich and cutthroat. The sections on US adoptions of Chinese girls are a little cheesy, a little cartoony, and a little delicious to read. Great literature? No. A story that consistently piqued my interest? Yes. Recommended.
