Historia
Perla, a young Jewish woman, was raised in an extreme ultra-orthodox society. When she turns 18, and her parents have a hard time finding a match for her, she is thrown into the arms of a cold, violent man who makes her life unbearable. A forbidden, chance encounter with a man, and the feelings that ensue, make her begin to question everything she has ever known - and even consider that, maybe, she does not have to choose this life that has been thrust upon her. But she knows that once she makes a drastic decision, there will be no way back into the arms of the Jewish community.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-26-22
First, it was most annoying to hear the narrator mispronounce so many of the Yiddish/Hebrew words and expressions. The story was one of many similar stories of women (and men) leaving the Hasidic community. This was one of the weakest of such stories with the main character contradicting herself in many instances as she shared her difficulties with various supporting characters throughout her story. It was a quick read and it did hold my attention as I wanted to hear how Pearl’s life turned out in the end.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Too much hype
Revisado: 08-24-22
I loved the last few chapters; but had I not been reading for a book club, I might not have listened until the end. I didn’t enjoy the detailed explanations about rowing and found Mad’a character fairly unbelievable. I found the narrator’s mispronunciations extremely annoying! Why don’t narrators do some research or receive guidance prior to diving into their performance?! Otherwise, I found her voice and infection pleasant.

Historia
Against all odds, three Slovakian sisters have survived years of imprisonment in the most notorious death camp in Nazi Germany: Auschwitz. Livia, Magda, and Cibi have clung together, nearly died from starvation and overwork, and the brutal whims of the guards in this place of horror. But now, the allies are closing in and the sisters have one last hurdle to face: the death march from Auschwitz, as the Nazis try to erase any evidence of the prisoners held there. Due to a last minute stroke of luck, the three of them are able to escape formation and hide in the woods for days.

Inspirational!
Revisado: 06-03-22
This story and the telling of it will remain with me forever. I loved the author’s style and the story is a triumph! The narrator was expressive and her voice was pleasant throughout; however her mispronunciation of some of the Yiddish and Hebrew words was at times distracting. Highly recommend!

Historia
Nora Silk doesn't really fit in on Hemlock Street, where every house looks the same. She's divorced. She wears a charm bracelet and high heels and red toreador pants. And the way she raises her kids is a scandal. But as time passes, the neighbors start having second thoughts about Nora. The women's apprehension evolves into admiration. The men's lust evolves into awe. The children are drawn to her in ways they can't explain.

Good story but…
Revisado: 08-05-21
The story, character development and performance kept me interested; and then it ended, just like that, with no closure at all. Meh.

Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

An American story for the ages
Revisado: 05-31-21
This story was devastatingly sad; yet I also found in it a sense of hope. I say hopeful because it speaks to the resilience of the American people during their darkest days, when faced with life altering crises that are out of their control. Listening to this book now, when we can see a glimmer of light at the end of our pandemic tunnel, I truly hope that my contemporaries can emerge from today’s challenges with similar resilience and the grace that Elsa and Lareda demonstrated throughout their struggles. The narrator, Julia Whelan, is a real talent who brought the characters and the story to life.

Great story!
Revisado: 03-22-21
This was a great read/listen with nuanced characters, depth and feeling. I really enjoy a book that teaches me something historical that I hadn’t been aware of before. This story delivered on that while presenting meaningful human interest. I also appreciated the unpredictability from beginning to end.

Meh
Revisado: 03-22-21
This was a disappointing, shallow story. All buildup, no substance. I found Hugo’s voice to be too deep and a bit grating, making him sound more like 65 than 45.
