Historia
Jason Watkins, the award-winning stage and screen actor best-known for his roles in The Lost Honour and A Very English Scandal, masterfully performs this brand-new recording of Barnaby Rudge; first published in 1841, it was Dickens’ fifth title and his first historical novel. Set against the backdrop of the Gordon Riots of 1780, Barnaby Rudge reflects back on a time of revolt against the British parliament, following the Catholic Relief Act of 1778.

Superb reading of a lesser-known classic
Revisado: 03-24-23
The darker elements of humanity are contrasted with the brighter, as usual, in Dickens’ excellent writing. There is, of course, mystery and humor, and a true-to-life raven. The author’s forward introduces his familiarity with birds of that feather, and I feared for his life throughout my first reading. Jason Watkins is an incredible narrator!

Delightfully witty
Revisado: 08-07-22
TE Kinsey has a knack for creating hilariously memorable characters and Elizabeth Knowelden has an incredible talent for bringing them to life. I love listening to the Welsh phrases and various accents. The mysteries are clever and the interaction between Lady Hardcastle and her “Tiny (expertly knife-wielding) Servant” often make me laugh aloud. Definitely of the cozy variety, the heroines have had exotic experiences and backgrounds to justify their surprising talents.

Historia
Jerusalem and the Sinai desert, AD 55. In the turbulent aftermath of the crucifixion of Jesus, agents of the Roman Empire receive information about a pilgrim bearing an incendiary letter from a religious fanatic calling himself Paul the Apostle to insurrectionists in Corinth. What's in the letter could bring down an empire. The Romans hire a former legionary, a solitary man-at-arms named Telamon to intercept the letter and destroy the courier. But once he meets the courier, Telamon experiences an extraordinary conversion.

Very edifying but not for the squeamish
Revisado: 07-12-21
Seems well-researched and not in conflict with the little we know about the times and Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. The writing describes torture by Romans and battles in a very graphic way, but not unnecessary for the big picture and the outcome! Great plot. In addition, have to say we ALWAYS love George Guidall’s voice!

Historia
This fast-paced, inspirational narrative reveals how God used one man of great courage, discipline, and humility to bring countless souls to Christ. God’s accomplishments through George Whitefield are to this day virtually unparalleled. In an era when many ministers were timid and apologetic in their preaching, he preached the gospel with aggressive zeal and undaunted courage. In the wake of his fearless preaching, revival swept across the British Isles, and the Great Awakening transformed the American colonies.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Ny husband and I are grateful to both the author and the narrator for skillfully opening to us the life and heart of Joe Rantz and all that molded him into the champion he became. What the team did In the Olympics was amazing, and we had no idea of all the obstacles they overcame to gain the victory; this was story that truly needed to be told.

Historia
A terrible darkness has fallen upon Jacob Weisz’s beloved Germany. The Nazi regime, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, has surged to power and now hold Germany by the throat. All non-Aryans - especially Jews like Jacob and his family - are treated like dogs. When tragedy strikes during one terrible night of violence, Jacob flees and joins rebel forces working to undermine the regime. But after a raid goes horribly wrong, Jacob finds himself in a living nightmare - trapped in a crowded, stinking car on the train to the Auschwitz death camp.

Well done!
Revisado: 08-16-18
This is an amazing presentation of Auschwitz—the magnitude of horror and hopelessness of those inside and the political indifference and denial of those outside is overwhelming. I find it incredible that, to this day, many individuals and organizations deny the numbers of murders that took place there.
Although this is a work of fiction, I recognized Witold Pilecki and Rudolf Vrba (whose given name was Walter Rosenberg!) and I appreciate the way their fictionalized characters are drawn. The difference between people who call themselves Christians and people who ARE Christians is well delineated and this is both unusual and refreshing. I have read of so many people who lost any faith they had when they were in the death camps, I am grateful that the author did not neglect to show that some of God’s chosen people did not lose faith in the Lord of Hosts. All the protagonists are portrayed with depth, respect and a tenderness that is deeply moving, and I am looking forward to reading this author’s other works.

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Hidden treasure
Revisado: 02-04-17
This is the perfect police mystery.
It's all about character, the gradual, skillful revelation of the depth of character, history, strength of "DC" Smith. This book draws you in in a casual, unassuming way, but you are hooked, deeply, from the moment the post-mortem is introduced. The layers of plot keep deepening, and all the characters are well-drawn, but Smith is the focus all the way. You trust and admire him and are sure that he will see things to the best possible end.
Peter Grainger is an amazingly sensitive writer, and Gildart Jackson the perfect narrator for his work. I appreciate the lack of graphic violence-- I wish we all would have the mindset that the funerals for victims are bad enough to imagine. Let the police handle the visuals-- do readers really need to see what they see, even fictionally? I loved getting the details second and third hand.
I was hopeful at the start of this first-in-series audiobook and now I am more than happy to declare myself a fan and follower.

Historia
Many people will remember Eric Liddell as the Olympic gold medalist from the Academy Award-winning film Chariots of Fire. Famously, Liddell would not run on Sunday because of his strict observance of the Christian Sabbath, and so he did not compete in his signature event, the 100 meters, at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He was the greatest sprinter in the world at the time, and his choice not to run was ridiculed by the British Olympic committee, his fellow athletes, and most of the world press.
