Not bad but somewhat "Preachy."
Revisado: 01-07-23
I wasn't really feeling the narrator. I love Dolly, but whoever edited in the narration made the inserted audio seem choppy. The story was okay--things seemed to come a little too easy to the main character, and the ending was predictable.
The biggest issue that I had was that the story was very man-hating. They spent A LOT of time complaining about how bad the music industry was to women and how horrible men were.
This is a good listen, and I love how they mention the college that I teach at (University of Arkansas, Fort Smith--my office is right off of the street mentioned in the story!).

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

A Good Look Inside the Life of a Child Star
Revisado: 01-01-23
I am too old to have enjoyed any of the TV shows that this young lady was in, but my kids loved iCarly. This book offers a glimpse into what it might be like to be a child star. The diets, the struggles, and the family pressures. Y'all, her mom was crazy! There are some sexually descriptive scenes that were awkward when popped up (since I was listening in the car with my teen daughters!) but they are brief. The narration is on point and her tone and cadence hit the mark. Highly recommend this book.

Historia
While he's not quite a household name, most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin, the voice-actor star of Archer and Bob's Burgers (and a sentient can of mixed vegetables in 2015's Wet Hot American Summer) a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. In a hilarious, self-deprecating memoir, Jon lays out some of his many failures in all areas of life, from Work ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to Family ("wherein a trip to PF Chang's fractures a family").

These ladies have a great working relationship that carries over the airwaves. The stories range from true crime to the supernatural/paranormal and this is one of the few podcasts that I can listen to the shows when it's a recording of a live event. I highly doubt you'll be disappointed if you give these Texas ladies a listen!!

Historia
This week, in Kodiak, Alaska, a very strange little "neighborhood", outside of town is inhabited with some very strange living situations, and all the weirdness that comes with it. Odd marriages, and too many people sharing a hut bring tensions to their peak, after accusations of being a little bit too friendly with a neighbor's spouse. This leads to a crazy showdown, and two very different accounts of what actually happened. Only thing is, one of the stories happens to have many witnesses to back it up!!Along the way, we find out that things are done a bit differently in Alaska, that a ...

A Must Listen!
Revisado: 08-02-22
H'yay yah let's go Sarsaparilla, and away!
This podcast is a must-listen. Smart, funny, and you WILL learn something! The host sprinkles in emotions--from humor, horror and disgust to sadness and empathy (dang allergies making the eyes water!)--while telling brilliant and diligently researched stories covering topics such as cults and true crime, historical subjects, biographies, and the supernatural. If you become a patreon (technically, a space lizard) then your dues are part of a massive donation made each month to support charities.
If you have never listened, I recommend starting with the Steve Irwin suck, the Betty White suck, or the Tony Alamo suck. Enjoy the back catalog!
3 out of 5 stars, wouldn't change a thing!

Racism at its finest
Revisado: 06-01-22
If someone would have written this story from a white perspective with the same disparaging remarks made towards a person of color that the author made about the brothers girlfriends this book would be on the banned list. The story starts off bad and somehow gets worse. I finished it, but it was a struggle. It's slow and repetitive in places, and the storyteller is pretty monotone, for the most part. I do like the quippy ending tho.

Predictable and Rambling
Revisado: 05-25-22
This story was barely okay. Pretty predictable and not a strong ending, just kind of fizzles out. Some of the character voices that the narrator plays out are just... bad. Made it somewhat hard to listen to, and there are some monotonous and droning parts to the story that I kept having to go back and replay because I'd get bored and zone out.
