Entertaining but too predictable
Revisado: 04-04-21
After the first few chapters I was really afraid Rigby would have a formulaic climax and I’d get angry and return the book in disgust. While she unfortunately did as expected (what I wouldn’t have given for a Christie-like twist) the characters and writing almost made up for it. I will try the next book. And just a warning I almost never figure who done it before the end.

Wanted a trial / investigation story, not this
Revisado: 02-11-21
For every page involving a really interesting murder you get at least 3 pages of the prosecutor's failed marriage, her husband's mistress, her feelings about her son, her mother's opinion on all of this -- basically the story line of a good chick flick. I'd like to find out what happens with the retrial but cannot wade through the garbage any more. Character development is one thing, a bit of romance can enhance a good story (as with Ellis Peters' Cadfael books) but this is just too much!

Superficial and inaccurate
Revisado: 10-21-20
Inaccurate is really the problem I had. While entertaining exaggerating events to the point of misrepresentation for the shock value is a Trumpian way of distorting history. For shame!

If only Nelson knew how to pronounce words
Revisado: 10-29-19
I would think a professional should find out how to pronounce words he's unfamiliar with. He does seem familiar with German and Russian pronunciations but...
The most grating thing is his pronouncing the final "s" in the pejorative "bosches" for Germans. His other errors are frequent enough to seriously distract from the story. I admit that in the later books someone has told him about some of his errors ("submariner" comes to mind) but he continues to mispronounce others.
It's a shame, his repertoire of voices makes it easy to recognize different characters, if only he didn't have this flaw...

Historia
In 1914, they called it The Great War, and few could imagine anything worse. For nearly three decades, a peace forged in blood and fatigue has held sway in North America. Now, Japan dominates the Pacific, the Russian Tsar rules Alaska, and England, under Winston Churchill, chafes for a return to its former glory. But behind the façade of world order, America is a bomb waiting to go off. Jake Featherston, the megalomaniacal leader of the Confederate States of America, is just the man to light the fuse.

Paul Costanzo is the worst reader I've come across
Revisado: 12-14-18
George Guidall was the narrator of the first 11 books in this series and was generally pretty good. I was a bit peeved that he couldn't pronounce the name Lucullus correctly (he had a soft c rather than a hard c). But I wonder that Costanzo knows how to read -- he gets many common words and most classical Roman names wrong. Turtledove is brilliant in this alternative history and deciding that Confederate blacks only had one name so they named their children with classical Roman names was really clever. While Guidall had a small pronunciation error with this name Costanzo totally garbles it and is clearly too lazy to even take 2 seconds to Google how to pronounce names and other words in the English language. It cannot be listened to. At least I can read the last 4 books although I'd rather listen to them.

Unbelievably boring
Revisado: 05-17-17
Any additional comments?
How can a small group of people witnessing the end of the world and being moved to an alternative America be dull? But somehow Price managed it. The back stories on the few survivors are given in excruciating detail then one of them is apparently reliving his life over and over. CRAP! Boring. A third of the way into the book it had not really started and he throws in this junk. I was so bored I couldn't keep going. AWFUL!

Historia
History has focused on Hitler's use of charisma and terror, asserting that the dictator made few concessions to maintain power. Nathan Stoltzfus, the award-winning author of Resistance of Heart: Intermarriage and the Rosenstrasse Protest in Germany, challenges this notion, assessing the surprisingly frequent tactical compromises Hitler made in order to preempt hostility and win the German people's complete fealty.

Apparent attempt to "prove" Hitler wasn't so bad
Revisado: 04-27-17
Would you try another book from Nathan Stoltzfus and/or Shaun Grindell?
No
Any additional comments?
The author appears to have the thesis that if you weren't Jewish life under Hitler wasn't so bad. Of course he went after some Protestant leaders and didn't like Catholics but it was OK to oppose the Nazis -- you wouldn't have much trouble if you did. CRAP!

Historia
Spain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history.

Revisado: 11-25-14
Would you try another book from Vonda N. McIntyre and/or Gayle Hendrix?
The reader, Gayle Hendrix, speaks in a monotone and you cannot differentiate characters by their voice (note: not voices, voice). The first chapter (I couldn't get any further) appears poorly written but that may be the fault of the narrator. AWFUL!
Has Starfarers turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gayle Hendrix?
Anyone. A dead person. A mute. A spider.
What character would you cut from Starfarers?
Don't know, didn't get that far.
